Futurism reported in October 2025 that Facebook users were encountering AI-looking videos of women—often portrayed as elderly—breaking glass bridges and falling. The report associates the trend with Meta AI, but it does not establish that Meta’s AI generated each clip. The creator, model, prompt and production chain for individual videos remain unidentified.
What Futurism reported about the videos
In an October 1, 2025 article, Futurism correspondent Joe Wilkins described clips built around a recurring scenario: a woman, often depicted as an older adult, strikes or breaks a glass-bottom bridge, then appears to fall. Some clips have tragic endings; others turn sentimental. One reported caption asked, “Is that real? Glass bridge accident.” Futurism’s report describes the videos as circulating on Facebook and links the trend to Meta AI, but does not identify how each clip was made.
Futurism cited a Facebook video with more than 130,000 views and an X post with more than 32 million views. Those were counts for particular examples as reported in the article, not a platform-wide tally or independently audited metrics. The article also quoted X user Josh Brooks, who said a Facebook Reels video autoplayed for him and drew comments praising a dog in the clip. Brooks’s post was quoted as saying: “Opened Facebook and Reels autoplayed. First reel had 57k likes and 12,000 comments.”

Wilkins wrote that some Facebook uploads had AI disclaimers, while “the vast majority” did not, and that many clips appeared on small, AI-heavy accounts with little engagement. These are the reporter’s observations at publication time—not the results of a systematic audit of Facebook’s video library or labeling coverage. The story does not establish how common the videos were across Facebook.

What is known—and not known—about who made them
The reporting does not identify the creator, exact AI model, prompt or workflow behind each clip. Meta’s published policy explains how it may label AI content, and a separate Meta post describes Meta AI’s development, but neither connects a particular reported video to a particular Meta tool or model. Calling the clips “Zuckerberg’s AI” therefore goes beyond what the cited reporting verifies.
Futurism placed the videos in the context of “dead internet theory” and platforms’ incentives to attract engagement. That is the article’s interpretation of the trend, not proof that a recommendation algorithm caused the clips to spread or that every video was produced with Meta AI.

How Meta says its AI labels work
In a policy post authored by Monika Bickert, Meta’s Vice President of Content Policy, the company says it may add an “AI info” label when it detects industry-shared indicators of AI generation or when a user discloses that content was AI-generated. Meta says it may use a more prominent label when digitally created or altered media presents a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on an important matter. The post includes updates through October 23, 2025. Meta’s policy explanation is the company’s account of its approach, not an independent assessment of how consistently labels appear in practice.
| Question | What Meta says | What the cited reporting establishes about the glass-bridge clips |
|---|---|---|
| What can trigger an AI label? | Detection of industry-shared AI indicators or a user’s disclosure. | Futurism reported that some uploads had AI disclaimers and most did not, but did not audit the platform or identify the label trigger for each clip. |
| How prominent is the label? | Meta says it may use a more prominent label for media posing a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on an important matter. | The report does not provide a systematic assessment of label placement or prominence across the videos. |
| Does a label establish accuracy? | The described label approach signals AI involvement; the policy post does not say that an AI label verifies the content’s factual accuracy. | The report does not independently verify the events depicted. |
| Is labeled content removed? | Meta says it generally keeps manipulated content available to label and contextualize unless it violates another policy. | The report does not document a removal decision or policy violation for each clip. |
Meta’s policy post says the company favors transparency and context over restricting manipulated media when no other policy requires removal. Bickert wrote: “We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media and avoid the risk of unnecessarily restricting freedom of speech, so we’ll keep this content on our platforms so we can add labels and context.” That describes Meta’s stated policy, not a guarantee that every AI-made post will be detected or labeled.

What Meta’s AI-related survey does—and does not—show
Meta’s policy post reported that 82% of more than 23,000 respondents across 13 countries favored warning labels for AI-generated content depicting people saying things they did not say. Meta reported the survey result in 2024. The question concerned fabricated speech by depicted people; it should not be read as a finding about all AI video, fabricated actions such as falling, or every user’s preferences.

In a 2024 post, Meta said Meta AI was built on Llama 3 and described prompt and response filters, expert testing and user feedback as parts of its responsible-AI work. The company also acknowledged that generative AI can produce inaccurate or inappropriate outputs. Meta’s product post provides company-stated context about Meta AI; it does not show which version or workflow, if any, produced the videos Futurism described.
