AI-driven on-chain gaming combines AI-controlled characters, agents, or generated content with game assets, actions, rules, or state recorded on a blockchain. The combination is real as a design direction, but it does not mean the AI itself runs on-chain, that every game is fully on-chain, or that the category has transformed mainstream gaming.
What does “on-chain gaming” mean?
“On-chain” describes which parts of a game use a blockchain. Some games use it for selected features, such as transferable currencies or NFT assets, while keeping gameplay logic and state on developer-operated servers. Others put core rules, logic, and game state in smart contracts; ethereum.org calls these fully on-chain games. The term therefore covers a spectrum, not a single architecture.
Outlier Ventures’ May 2024 builder document makes a similar distinction: many blockchain games keep NFTs or currencies on-chain while logic, state, and code remain on company servers. Its use of “true Web3 game” is the document’s framing, not a universal industry standard. Read the Outlier Ventures builder document.
Putting an asset on a blockchain can make its ownership record transferable or independently visible, but it does not make the entire game decentralized or permanent. Ronan Sandford, creator of Conquest.eth, described his aspiration to ethereum.org this way: “From the day I stumbled upon Ethereum, I was hooked on the idea of creating games that run and evolve independently of their creator.” That is a design goal, not proof that every blockchain game can operate without maintainers. How do AI and blockchain fit together?
AI and blockchain address different parts of a game. AI can generate dialogue or other content, control non-player characters, or make decisions for an agent. A blockchain can record asset ownership, selected actions, rules, or game state. A game may use one technology without the other, and combining them does not dictate where the AI model runs.
For example, AI inference can happen off-chain, with a resulting action or outcome submitted to a smart contract. In that design, the blockchain may record or enforce the action without running the model or proving that its decision was correct. “AI-driven” therefore does not, by itself, mean the AI is decentralized, on-chain, or verifiable.

What roles can AI agents play in these games?
Autonomous characters in a shared world
Agentbox describes a design in which agents act in a spatial world with location, state, risk, asset safety, and behavioral coordination handled in a verifiable on-chain execution environment. Its documentation says agents can move, fight, gather, craft, acquire land, learn skills, and execute transactions. These are descriptions of Agentbox’s stated design, not independent evidence of performance at scale. See Agentbox’s whitepaper summary.
Companions, training partners, and autonomous players
SoonChain describes an AI Agent as a Service model built from gameplay data authorized by players. It says developers can use its AIGG Engine and DCRC to create agents that simulate player behavior, serve as companions or esports training partners, or play autonomously. Those are project claims; the documentation does not establish measured improvements in training, enjoyment, or game quality. Read SoonChain’s AaaS documentation.

Responsive dialogue and generated content
AI could also generate character dialogue, lore, or content that responds to player choices. Outlier Ventures framed more responsive NPCs and stories as a building opportunity in its May 2024 document. That is a proposed use, not evidence that generative AI improves engagement or retention.
What do current adoption figures show?
The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2025 State of the Industry report search excerpt lists virtual agents or agentic AI at 34.2% and AI-driven NPCs or companions at 17.0% among company-reported AI implementation areas. These figures describe reported company implementation, not the share of players using AI games, the market share of such games, or proof that the features improve gameplay. What affects the actual player experience?
Which parts of the game are on-chain
Check whether a game records only assets, selected actions, or its rules and state on-chain. The more gameplay depends on blockchain transactions, the more the chain’s confirmation time and fees can matter. A tokenized inventory alone does not establish that combat, movement, or progression is handled by a smart contract.

Project descriptions can identify intended architecture, but the reviewed documentation does not provide comparable technical detail for scoring the named projects against one another. Before relying on an AI agent’s actions, look for the project’s explanation of where inference happens, which actions are committed on-chain, and what users can independently verify.

Network speed, fees, and availability
Ethereum.org says Layer 2 networks can provide faster confirmations and lower fees, and that most games use L2 solutions. It lists ecosystems and tools including Ronin, Starknet, Abstract, Base, Cartridge, Dojo, and MUD. This is a dated ecosystem snapshot from a page last updated July 20, 2026, not an exhaustive ranking or guarantee that any particular game is available on every network. Permissions and economic exposure
If a game involves tokens or valuable assets, consider what permissions a wallet connection or transaction requests before approving it. The available evidence does not support conclusions about token value or whether a game’s economy is a good investment.
Do you need a crypto wallet or a hardware wallet?
Ethereum.org says players need a crypto wallet to manage digital in-game assets and, in some cases, to log in. The exact requirement depends on the game and its network. Its wallet directory groups options by type, including hardware, mobile, and browser wallets, and lists features such as NFT support and supported networks. Browse Ethereum.org’s wallet directory.
A hardware wallet is an optional physical custody device, not a universal requirement for playing. Choose a wallet only after checking the game’s supported chain and wallet compatibility; some games may also offer an embedded account experience. Wallet support can change, so confirm the live game’s instructions before setting up.
