An AI “content archaeologist” is best understood as an exploratory interface over structured Sanity content: a way to ask questions of a collection and uncover useful relationships or details. Sanity provides tools that can give coding agents platform guidance and, separately, read-only, schema-aware access to content. The title alone does not establish what a particular dig-site app does or whether it was built or tested, so the useful starting point is to separate those capabilities from the project idea.

What a content dig site could help you discover

Sanity stores content as structured data rather than only as finished pages. That structure can give an explorer more to work with than a page title or a block of text: an agent with appropriate access can use the content’s schema as context when answering questions. A “dig site” could make that exploration feel more approachable, but its actual search, visualization, and discovery features depend on the application being built.

A practical working question is: “How do I use AI to explore content in Sanity?” The answer has two parts: give the coding assistant enough Sanity-specific guidance to build appropriately, and, if the application needs to ask questions about real content, provide a controlled way to access that content.

Two different ways to give an AI Sanity context

Approach What it provides When it fits Important distinction
Sanity development tooling Sanity’s development guide presents the Agent Toolkit and MCP server as ways to help coding agents generate Sanity-aware code. The toolkit includes agent skills and editor plugins; the guide names Cursor, Claude Code, and VS Code for automatic MCP configuration. When an agent is helping implement or modify a Sanity application and needs platform-specific development guidance. This helps the coding agent understand Sanity development. It does not, by itself, mean the agent has been given access to live project content.
Sanity Context A hosted MCP server that Sanity describes as providing read-only, schema-aware access to content. When an agent needs to query content or prepared knowledge bases with schema context. This is a content-access path, not simply development guidance. It has organization, schema, token, and agent setup prerequisites.

The two approaches can serve different roles in one development workflow, but they are not interchangeable. Development tooling helps an agent work on Sanity code; Context lets an agent inspect content within the access granted to it.

What Sanity Context requires

Sanity’s quick start, last updated September 3, 2026, describes Context as read-only and schema-aware. A prompt alone is not enough to connect an agent to content. The documented setup requires:

  • Sanity Context enabled for the organization.
  • A Sanity project containing content and a deployed schema from Studio v5.1.0 or later.
  • An organization API token with Context Viewer permissions, stored server-side. The guide says Context Editor also works, but Viewer is the least-privilege role sufficient for the described access.
  • A coding agent, a model, and the model’s API key.
  • Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ to run npx.

After connecting, the guide recommends a simple verification: ask the agent a question whose answer is already known from the content, then check that it answers from that content. This tests whether the connection is returning relevant material; it is not proof that every later answer will be correct.

Keep access scoped and credentials server-side

Read-only access is a meaningful boundary: it lets an agent inspect content without granting it permission to change that content through the described Context connection. The organization token still needs to be protected. Follow the server-side storage requirement rather than embedding a privileged token in browser code or exposing it in a prompt.

Watch for the documented package-version mismatch

The quick start notes that @ai-sdk/mcp and ai share an internal provider dependency, so their major versions must match. It warns that an unpinned install can resolve an incompatible newer MCP package—for example, combining ai@6 with an unpinned MCP dependency may cause type errors. Treat this as version-specific guidance and recheck the current quick start when installing packages.

How to vibe-code the interface without skipping engineering judgment

Sanity’s September 18, 2026 guide recommends the Agent Toolkit and MCP server for AI-assisted Sanity development, and points newcomers toward AI coding-agent and AI app-builder quickstarts. Its described toolkit includes skills for Sanity practices, AEO/SEO, content modeling, and content experimentation, plus Claude Code and Cursor plugins. These are documented options, not evidence that one editor or agent performs better than another.

For an exploratory interface, an iterative workflow is more defensible than expecting one prompt to produce a finished application:

  1. Define the discovery task. Describe what a user should be able to ask or find, what content the app may access, and what it must not change.
  2. Ask for a small implementation step. Use Sanity-aware development guidance where appropriate, and give the agent the relevant schema and application context rather than an open-ended request to “build everything.”
  3. Inspect the generated changes. Review the code and permissions, including where credentials are handled and whether the implementation matches the project’s schema.
  4. Run the app or relevant tests. Check actual behavior with representative content and known-answer questions; do not infer correctness from code that merely compiles.
  5. Revise deliberately. Correct misunderstandings, narrow access, and make manual edits where the generated code or interface falls short.

A 2025 paper analyzing over 8 hours of curated video of coding sessions describes a similar loop: prompt, scan and evaluate generated code, test the application, and manually edit as needed. The authors write, “Critically, vibe coding does not eliminate the need for programming expertise but rather redistributes it toward context management, rapid code evaluation, and decisions about when to transition between AI-driven and manual manipulation of code.” The study describes observed sessions; it does not establish that vibe coding guarantees quality or improves outcomes for every project.

What the platform claims—and what that does not establish

Sanity’s Studio product page describes schema-aware Content Agent and AI assistance, change review, role controls, and approval before publication. Those are vendor-described platform features. They do not establish that a particular content-explorer project used those features, had the right controls configured, or was validated against real content.

Likewise, documentation for a hosted MCP connection establishes a described access path and setup requirements, not the behavior of an unidentified application. Without project artifacts or test results, no specific dig-site workflow, integration success, time saving, latency, cost, or user outcome can be claimed.

Where a Sanity content explorer may be useful

A schema-aware, read-only agent could be useful when a team wants to ask exploratory questions about a content collection without giving the agent permission to publish or edit through that connection. Whether a visual “dig site” improves discovery depends on the questions users actually need answered and the interface built around them. Start with a narrow, verifiable discovery task, keep access limited, and evaluate answers against known content before relying on the tool for consequential decisions.

For broader official guidance, Sanity’s Build with AI overview collects its AI development material.
