AI is making robots more capable, but a striking demonstration is not the same as a dependable, affordable helper that works across an ordinary home or workplace. Robots already affect some workers through industrial automation; broad adoption of general-purpose humanoids is a separate, much less established prospect.
Robots already have a large role in factories
Industrial automation is not waiting for humanoids. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reported that about 5 million industrial robots were operating worldwide in 2025, up 9% from the previous year, after more than 600,000 new installations. Those figures describe industrial robots broadly—not humanoid robots in homes. IFR’s September 2026 release also forecasts 655,000 installations in 2026 and 806,000 in 2029; those are projections, not completed counts.
AI, machine vision, sensing and easier programming can expand the tasks industrial robots handle, according to IFR. But the numbers demonstrate growth in established industrial automation, not that a general-purpose robot is ready to do varied household chores or replace a person across a workplace.
Why humanoid robots are a different proposition
A humanoid form may help a robot navigate spaces designed for people, but it does not automatically make the machine versatile, safe, or economical. Humanoids combine perception, manipulation, movement, hardware and software. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s assessment, updated in March 2025, notes improvements in mobility, dexterity and environmental perception while identifying significant remaining challenges to general-purpose commercial use. Its detailed technology assessment had a December 2024 cutoff.

- Reliable performance: A robot must keep working, recover from errors and perform at useful speed—not merely complete a task once.
- Adaptability and dexterity: Real settings contain varied objects, layouts and tasks that are harder than a controlled demonstration.
- Endurance and upkeep: Battery runtime, maintenance and operational resilience affect how much useful work a robot can deliver.
- Safety and integration: Working around people and fitting into existing systems and workflows require more than capable hardware.
- Economics: Purchase and operating costs must make sense against the task-specific alternatives and the work actually completed.
Gartner’s January 2026 forecast says fewer than 100 companies would progress humanoid proofs of concept beyond experimentation and fewer than 20 would have humanoids live in production for manufacturing and supply-chain use by 2028. Gartner expects most deployments to remain in controlled environments. This is an analyst forecast for those sectors, not a verified count of all robotics uses. Gartner analyst Abdil Tunca described the technology as “immature and far from meeting expectations for versatility and cost-effectiveness.” The forecast also says humanoids currently cost multiple times more than task-specific polyfunctional robots while delivering lower throughput and uptime in relevant supply-chain applications.
Capability does not mean cost-effective adoption
A robot might be able to perform a task in principle without being fast, reliable or inexpensive enough to be a practical substitute for a person. Anthropic’s September 2026 analysis estimates that robots could perform 74% of US physical tasks, representing 34% of working hours, but would be cost-competitive with people for just 0.3% of work. These are estimates produced by its task-rating and cost framework, not measurements of robots already doing that share of work.

- Learn, Modify and Create: Follow 35+ guided lessons with example code, then adjust sensor thresholds, timing, display text, motor behavior and control logic to turn structured exercises into access systems, monitors, alarms and interactive projects
- Organized for Repeatable Learning: Pre-soldered modules, a solderless breadboard, storage case and small-parts box reduce setup time and keep sensors, LEDs, ICs, wires and other components easy to find between projects
Anthropic says the cost-competitive share could take 40 years to reach 10% if robot prices fall along past trends. That is a conditional scenario, not a firm prediction. The analysis is useful precisely because it distinguishes technical capability from economic competitiveness: a task being possible does not guarantee that a robot will be adopted for it. Anthropic explains its framework and estimates.

Factories
Factories are where the clearest evidence of large-scale deployment exists: IFR’s global installation and operating-stock figures cover industrial robots broadly. These systems automate specialized work; their prevalence should not be read as evidence that humanoid helpers are commonplace.

Warehouses and supply chains
Humanoid pilots may appear in controlled facilities, but Gartner’s forecast points to limited production deployment through 2028. Interact Analysis likewise reports that 2025 humanoid production was concentrated in China and that much early demand involved research, data collection, entertainment and trials. Its market research identifies reliability, return on investment, multitasking, data availability, endurance and safety frameworks as constraints. These are findings about humanoids, not the same category as IFR’s industrial-robot counts. Interact Analysis’s market assessment estimates that Chinese vendors produced over 90% of humanoid robots and China adopted about 75% of humanoid units in 2025.
Hazardous or labor-constrained work
Interact Analysis expects teleoperated or semi-autonomous systems to find early use in some hazardous situations and in regions shaped by labor-cost differences. This is a market-research outlook, not a guarantee; a narrowly useful system in a specific setting is not the same as a general-purpose worker.

Homes, care and public spaces
The UK assessment treats domestic support and healthcare as more uncertain and challenging applications, with safety and public acceptance unresolved. A home is not a factory cell: objects, people and tasks vary, and a useful system must handle that variation without creating unacceptable risks.

How to judge a robotics claim
When a company or demonstration says a robot can do a job, ask what evidence would show it is ready for routine use. Compare the actual task and setting, rather than the robot’s appearance or the most impressive clip.

- How consistently does it complete the task, and what happens when it fails?
- How fast is it, and how much useful work does it deliver during operating time?
- Can it handle variations in objects, layouts and task sequences, or only a tightly specified routine?
- What are its operating-time, energy, maintenance and recovery requirements?
- How is safety around people established, and how does the system fit existing workflows?
- What is the total cost and expected return compared with a task-specific or polyfunctional robot?
A successful demo answers whether a system can complete a task under particular conditions. It does not by itself establish sustained uptime, low error rates, safe operation around people, easy integration or positive economics across varied environments.
What to expect in everyday life
The near-term answer is mixed: robotics already changes some work, especially in established industrial settings, and humanoid pilots may expand in carefully controlled applications. But the evidence does not support treating recent AI progress as a sign that affordable, reliable, general-purpose robots will soon be routine in homes or unpredictable workplaces. The pace of wider adoption depends on demonstrated performance, safety, integration and total cost—not capability claims alone.
