AI can speed up drafts and code, but a faster first pass is not the same as a finished task—or a lighter workload. The practical response is to choose work you can verify, make review time visible, and keep building the judgment and skills your role requires.

What do the latest workplace findings actually show?

AI use is substantial, but the available figures come from different surveys and populations. SHRM’s 2026 U.S. workplace report, based on data from more than 5,000 workers, says 41% use AI at work. A separate Jobs for the Future (JFF) 2026 report gives a 38% figure. These results should not be combined into a single estimate or treated as directly comparable.

SHRM also reports that 44% of workers who use AI describe their output as “AI slop.” That is respondents’ characterization, not an objective audit of output quality, and it does not mean that 44% of all workers produce poor work. The same report says 45% of early-career professionals feel pressure to use AI in their roles.

These findings describe reported use, perceptions, and experiences—not a universal forecast of what AI will do to an individual job. The studies discussed below use different methods and samples, so keep each result attached to its source and population.

Why can faster AI work turn into workload creep?

A tool can reduce the time needed to produce a first draft while leaving validation, correction, integration, and maintenance to people. If a team responds by asking for more output, the saved drafting time may not become free time. That is a useful way to think about workload creep, but the sources here do not establish that AI universally increases working hours.

DORA’s 2025 report draws on more than 100 hours of qualitative data and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide. It describes AI as an amplifier of organizational strengths and dysfunctions: tools operate within the workflows, priorities, and practices around them. That makes review standards and clear accountability part of the AI workflow, not administrative details to sort out afterward.

A separate Microsoft Research study surveyed 484 software developers. It found an association between a larger gap between developers’ ideal and actual workweeks and lower productivity and satisfaction. The study does not establish that AI causes this gap. Its relevance is as a work-design lens: consider whether a new workflow improves how time is spent or adds more fragmented, less-valued work.

TRALT Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Chair with Lumbar Support Black, 1
  • High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
  • Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
  • Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
  • Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching

How should you decide what to delegate to AI?

Use these questions as a practical triage, not as a validated scoring system. A task is a better candidate when its result is easy to check, errors have limited consequences, and review takes less effort than doing the work unaided. Be more cautious when the output is hard to verify, the stakes are high, or the task is important practice for a skill you need to retain.

  • Verifiability: Can you check the result against tests, a specification, known facts, or an authoritative source?
  • Stakes: What would happen if the result were wrong, incomplete, insecure, or misleading?
  • Review and integration: How much work remains to validate, adapt, integrate, and maintain the output?
  • Learning value: Does doing the task build a capability you need to develop or keep sharp?
  • Workweek fit: Does the change move time toward work you consider valuable, or further away from it?
  • Organizational conditions: Are expectations, review standards, and responsibility for the result clear?

In an internal study, Anthropic found that its engineers often began by delegating work they described as boring, low-stakes, or easy to verify, then progressed toward more complex tasks. The study had 64 final survey responses and interviewed the first 53 respondents; it describes one company and is exploratory, not a universal prescription. The useful principle is to expand delegation gradually as your ability to check the output improves.

How can you make review work visible?

Track the whole task, not just the time to generate a draft. For a recurring work item, note the time spent prompting or generating, checking, correcting, integrating, and maintaining the result. This simple accounting can reveal whether a faster first step actually reduces total effort or merely shifts it.

When a task repeatedly needs extensive correction, adjust the workflow: narrow the request, add tests or clearer requirements, change which work is delegated, or stop using AI for that task. For software, include security, edge cases, and maintainability in review rather than treating a successful compile or passing a small test as proof that the work is sound.

For teams, agree in advance what “done” means, who is responsible for checking the result, and whether success is measured by quality and outcomes as well as output volume. DORA’s findings support looking at those organizational conditions alongside the tool; they do not show that a particular policy will work identically for every team.

Which skills should technology workers build?

In JFF’s 2026 survey report, drawing on findings for 2025, 38% of workers identified technical skills as increasingly important and 40% identified problem-solving. The report says 47% needed to acquire new skills because of AI’s impact on work. These are workers’ reported views and needs, not a requirement that every person follow the same training plan.

For an individual career plan, start with the work you want to do and the capabilities it actually requires. Strengthen technical foundations alongside problem-solving, adaptability, and strategic thinking—the areas JFF reports workers seeing as increasingly important. Build evidence of those capabilities through projects, code review, documentation, debugging, and decisions you can explain, rather than relying only on familiarity with a particular AI tool.

Protect deliberate practice for tasks where producing the answer is not the only goal. Anthropic’s internal study records an employee concern that when output becomes easy and fast, it can become harder to make time to learn. That is a concern raised by participants, not a settled finding about all developers. The practical question is whether your workflow still gives you enough opportunity to understand, test, and explain the work you submit.

Why are early-career workers reporting more pressure?

JFF compared respondents with 0–3 years of experience with those who had more experience. Early-career respondents were more likely to say AI had affected their jobs (74% versus 64%); 40% versus 19% said they had changed or were considering changing career plans in the near future because of AI. These are survey findings for those experience groups, not predictions for every new technology worker.

SHRM separately reports that 45% of early-career professionals feel pressure to use AI in their roles. The two reports ask different questions and should not be treated as one measure.

For someone early in a technology career, use AI in ways that preserve opportunities to learn: attempt the problem, compare your reasoning with the output, test it, and ask a reviewer to explain gaps you missed. Seek mentorship and substantive review rather than treating an AI-generated answer as a substitute for feedback. Anthropic’s exploratory, single-employer study describes possible reductions in some mentorship interactions; it does not establish that mentorship is disappearing across the industry.

What can job-market analysis tell you—and what can’t it?

PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer analyzed close to a billion job advertisements and company financial reports across six continents. It distinguishes between jobs exposed to AI, work that can be augmented, and work that can be automated. Those categories describe different kinds of exposure; they are not certain predictions that a particular occupation or worker will lose a job.

PwC says it cannot prove with certainty that AI caused the productivity patterns it analyzes. Job advertisements and company reports can indicate broad changes, but they cannot determine an individual’s prospects or isolate AI as the cause of every observed change. Use this analysis as context, not as a personal employment forecast.

What is a sensible next step?

  1. Choose one recurring task with a result you can check and limited consequences if it is wrong.
  2. Define the acceptance criteria before asking AI to help, including relevant tests or factual checks.
  3. Record the time spent generating, reviewing, correcting, and integrating the result.
  4. Compare the final quality and total effort with your usual approach, and keep using AI only if the full workflow improves.
  5. Review your learning goals and workload periodically with a manager or mentor; raise review or integration work that is being overlooked.
