AI is reshaping venture capital, not replacing it. In 2025, AI firms attracted most measured venture investment, and a large share went to a small number of very large deals. That concentration supports the view that the funding bar is rising for many startups—but it does not prove every investor has tightened screening or that non-AI companies cannot raise. AI can help investors analyze information faster; choosing companies, building relationships and supporting founders are broader jobs.

How much venture funding went to AI in 2025?

The global and US figures both show AI’s prominence, but they describe different markets and use different data sources and categories. They should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable.

Measure Reported 2025 figure Scope and source
Global VC investment in AI firms $258.7 billion, or 61% of $427.1 billion in total VC investment Global; OECD, published 2026
US VC deal value $320 billion across 15,352 deals; AI represented 65.4% of deal value United States; National Venture Capital Association, published 2026
US AI deal value $222 billion United States; National Venture Capital Association, published 2026

The OECD’s global measure puts AI’s share at 30% in 2022, compared with 61% in 2025. These are annual market figures, not a guarantee of a lasting trend; totals and classifications can change as data are revised.

Why does the funding bar appear higher?

The strongest evidence is concentration: much of the measured capital flowed to a small number of large rounds. That can make the market feel more selective for founders who are not positioned to attract exceptional checks, even without proving that investors across the board have changed their screening criteria.

Large rounds dominate investment value

Globally, about 73% of AI VC investment value in 2025 came from deals above $100 million, according to the OECD. In US data, 487 mega-deals made up 3.2% of venture deal count but accounted for 67% of total deal value, according to the National Venture Capital Association. The global OECD percentage covers AI investment value; the US NVCA figures describe all venture deals for the deal-count and total-value comparison, so they are not the same measure.

AI investment is not evenly distributed across stages

OECD analysis finds that early-stage AI funding’s share has declined relative to later rounds since 2023. That signals a changing mix of investment, not that early-stage AI companies are unable to raise or that every investor now requires the same milestones.

Infrastructure and model development attract major sums

The largest 2025 industry allocation in the OECD classification was IT infrastructure and hosting, at $109.3 billion globally. The category includes compute infrastructure as well as direct investments in model developers, so it should not be read as a pure measure of hosting-company funding.

Why are AI startups getting so much venture funding?

The investment totals show where capital went, not a single cause for why it went there. They do indicate that investors committed substantial sums to companies building or enabling AI, particularly in infrastructure and model development. Because the largest rounds account for so much of the value, a few big financings can shape the overall picture disproportionately.

That market allocation has coincided with a difficult funding environment for strong non-AI businesses, an observation made by Endeavor Catalyst in 2026. It is an institutional observation, not a quantified finding that AI investment caused those companies’ fundraising difficulties.

How is AI changing venture capital work?

AI can speed up tasks that involve reviewing large volumes of information. The OECD says it can help automate due diligence by analyzing financial, market and other data, and by scanning legal documents, pitch decks and news. Its report describes this as a way for VC investors to analyze information more quickly—not as a replacement for investment judgment.

Axios reported in 2025 that some VC back-office work was already being automated and that investors were increasingly using AI for diligence. Its reporting also points to relationship-based access to investors and the human work of understanding founders and supporting them after investment. Those observations illustrate why automating document review is different from replacing the whole investor role; they should not be treated as a universal account of every fund.

Is AI replacing venture capital?

No evidence cited here establishes that AI is replacing venture capital as an institution. The documented change is narrower: AI tools can assist with parts of sourcing and diligence, while investment decisions, access to networks and post-investment support extend beyond document analysis. The available evidence supports task automation, not the elimination of venture investors.

What founders should take from the funding data

For founders, the figures are a reason to read the market carefully rather than assume that simply using AI makes a company fundable. Capital is concentrated, and the data do not measure a universal change in investor standards or establish a formula for getting funded.

  • Distinguish funding headlines from the broader deal market: a small number of mega-deals can account for a large share of total value.
  • Look at stage and category, not only the overall AI total; infrastructure and later rounds have a different profile from early-stage applications.
  • Treat 2025 figures as a snapshot of a cyclical market, not a permanent allocation of venture capital.
