AI is changing email marketing across the campaign workflow—not just by drafting copy. Today, tools can help marketers generate message variations, select or tailor content for segments, estimate send times, and analyze campaign behavior. The value depends on the quality and permitted use of customer data, a clear goal, controlled measurement, deliverability, and human review. No universal lift in opens, clicks, conversions, revenue, or inbox placement has been established.

How is AI changing email marketing?

AI-supported email work falls into two broad categories. Generative systems draft, rewrite, or produce message variants from a brief. Predictive and analytical systems use past interactions to estimate useful segments, content, timing, or next actions. Some platforms combine both, but the capabilities and results vary by product and campaign.

For example, Salesforce describes platform uses that draw on CRM and customer interaction data to personalize messages, adapt content to segments, recommend content, and analyze email, website, and purchase behavior. It also lists features such as send-time optimization, content selection, subject-line testing, and multi-variant messages. These are vendor-described capabilities, not proof that every platform offers them or that they improve every campaign. Salesforce’s AI email marketing guide explains the use cases and planning considerations.

The important shift is that AI can assist at several connected stages: planning, audience selection, message creation, scheduling, testing, and analysis. Automating one stage does not automatically improve the others. A polished draft sent to the wrong audience, based on unreliable data, or without a valid permission basis can still fail.

How can AI personalize email campaigns?

Personalization can mean anything from using a recipient’s name to selecting content or offers based on interactions. More advanced systems may use behavioral or purchase data to choose a segment, recommend content, or estimate a suitable send time. The more consequential the targeting, the more important it is to know which data was used and whether its use is appropriate.

Start with the data and permission

  • Identify the sources the system uses, such as CRM records, email engagement, website activity, or purchases.
  • Check whether those records are accurate, current, and relevant to the campaign objective.
  • Confirm the permission and privacy basis for collecting and using the data, and establish who can inspect, correct, or limit it.
  • Keep segment logic understandable enough for staff to detect unsuitable targeting or unexpected recommendations.

More automated targeting does not remove the need to govern customer data. Requirements differ by market. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office guidance on direct marketing by electronic mail covers PECR, consent, subscriber types, soft opt-ins, bought-in lists, public contact details, opt-outs, data-protection rules, and tracking pixels. It was updated on 28 April 2026 and includes a charitable-purpose soft opt-in introduced by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025; that option applies only when its requirements are met. This is UK-specific guidance, not a general permission for marketers elsewhere. Read the ICO’s electronic mail marketing guidance.

Will AI write marketing emails?

AI can draft an email or generate alternatives from a brief, but the output still needs an accountable human reviewer. Fluency is not evidence that a claim is true, an offer is accurate, or a message complies with applicable law.

Review before sending

  • Verify factual claims, product details, and any performance promises.
  • Check prices, discount terms, expiration dates, eligibility, and landing-page consistency.
  • Confirm that the tone fits the brand and that the message is appropriate for its intended segment.
  • Check the final email against applicable marketing and privacy requirements.

AI-related marketing claims can attract regulatory scrutiny. The FTC’s AI topic page records agency matters, including a 21 May 2026 announcement about a settlement concerning alleged deception in marketing an AI-powered service. That is not an email-specific rule, but it is a reason to avoid unsupported claims about what an AI feature can do or the results it will produce. See the FTC’s AI-related matters and resources.

Will AI improve email open rates?

It may help teams test subject lines, tailor content, or choose send times, but the available evidence here does not establish a universal numerical increase in opens—or in clicks, conversions, revenue, or deliverability—caused by AI. A platform’s feature description is not proof of campaign impact. Measure results in your own audience rather than treating automation as a guaranteed lift.

Test for a credible result

  1. Choose one outcome that matters to the campaign, such as a downstream conversion rather than opens alone.
  2. Keep a suitable control group so you can compare the AI-assisted approach with the existing method.
  3. Change one meaningful variable at a time; testing multiple changes together makes it harder to identify what drove a difference.
  4. Review the result against the campaign’s goal and the limits of the test before attributing a gain to AI.

Salesforce recommends using a control group and avoiding simultaneous tests of multiple elements. Those practices make it easier to separate an AI-related change from other campaign differences. Salesforce’s guide discusses testing and campaign goals.

How does AI affect email deliverability?

Deliverability is not just a matter of message content. Sender and recipient signals, engagement, and message relevance all matter. AI can support behavioral segmentation and content selection that make a message more relevant to its audience, but that does not establish that adopting AI by itself improves inbox placement.

Validity’s 2026 Email Deliverability Benchmark, published in March 2026, describes AI as influencing personalization, behavioral segmentation, product selections, and inbox relevance. It also notes that AI can make fraudulent email more convincing and reports demand for AI-powered segmentation and targeting in new sending platforms. This is an industry benchmark’s account of the landscape, not causal evidence of improved placement. Its discussion makes security and relevance important parts of any platform evaluation. What are the best AI email marketing tools?

There is no single best tool for every team, and a generic AI label does not establish that a product fits a particular workflow. Evaluate platforms against the task you need to improve and the controls your organization requires.

Evaluation area Questions to ask
Data foundation Which customer data sources can it use? Can staff inspect, correct, and restrict the data, and is its use permitted for this purpose?
Workflow fit Does it address a real bottleneck—drafting, segmentation, timing, recommendations, or analytics—or merely add an AI feature without solving a defined problem?
Testing and measurement Can the team keep a control group, isolate variables, and connect email activity to the outcomes that matter?
Deliverability and security Does the evaluation account for relevance and engagement as well as authentication and defenses against fraud?
Human oversight and trust Can reviewers check claims, offer terms, tone, segment logic, and unusual outputs before a send?
Compliance Does the planned use meet the email-marketing, privacy, and AI requirements that apply in the sender’s market?

Begin with a clear campaign goal and a sound data foundation. Then assess whether a specific capability reduces a real bottleneck, and test its effect with a control rather than assuming a feature will improve results.

What rules apply to AI-generated marketing email?

Email marketing and AI obligations depend on geography, use case, and the system involved. Do not assume that a rule described for one jurisdiction applies everywhere, or that every AI-assisted email is subject to the same labeling requirement.

The European Commission’s overview states that Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 became applicable on 2 August 2026, with exceptions and extended timelines for specified high-risk systems. It describes transparency duties for generative AI providers, including making generated content identifiable and visibly labeling certain categories; those transparency rules came into effect in August 2026. The overview does not classify a particular email-marketing system or campaign, so whether a specific message must be labeled depends on the applicable provisions and facts. Consult the European Commission’s AI Act overview.

Trust may also be a practical consideration beyond legal duties. A Gartner Consumer Community survey of 335 U.S. consumers, conducted in October and November 2025, found that 78% said explicit labeling of AI-generated content was “very important” or “the most important factor” in maintaining trust. This finding concerns AI-generated content generally, not email-specific preferences. Gartner also forecast in January 2026 that 60% of brands will use agentic AI to facilitate streamlined one-to-one interactions by 2028; that is a forecast across brand interactions, not an observed email-marketing adoption rate. Gartner’s Emily Weiss described the broader shift as “the end of channel-based marketing as we know it,” a forecast-oriented statement about marketing, not an established description of email alone. Read Gartner’s forecast and survey details.
