By August 2026, AI agents were reportedly using nearly five times as many tokens as human users on OpenRouter. That is a striking increase in activity on one AI-routing platform—not proof that agents consume five times the tokens across the entire AI market, or that there are five times as many agents as people.
What the nearly 5× figure measures
The comparison is about token volume attributed to agentic and human traffic on OpenRouter. Daily AI Roundup’s August 25, 2026 report attributes the figure to a16z drawing on OpenRouter data, while AI for the 99% also describes the comparison as OpenRouter-specific. Neither report establishes a market-wide ratio. Daily AI Roundup; AI for the 99%
Tokens are units of text and other model input or output—not a count of people, agents, tasks completed, or dollars spent. A person can run an agent that makes many model calls, so token traffic cannot be read as a headcount comparison. The reports do not provide a validated comparison of costs, productivity, or task success.

The same OpenRouter reporting says agentic token usage grew about fourteenfold from February to August 2026. AI FrontPage also reports 7.3 trillion agentic tokens through August 7, 2026, and says more than 85% of agentic token use came from cached prompts. Those figures are attributed to an a16z/OpenRouter chart by the secondary coverage; the chart itself and its methodology are not available in the cited reports for independent verification. - Wide range of applications: this electronic palm clicker is great for game parties, meetings, cooking contests, school, bars and other occasions; It can be applied for different kinds of competitions and family games
These are reported platform figures, not a measure of growth across all AI services. The cached-prompt share also matters: raw token volume alone does not establish what the traffic cost, since the reports provide no validated total-cost comparison.
Why an agent may use more tokens on a task
A human conversation often consists of a prompt followed by a response. An agentic workflow can take more steps: it receives a goal and background context, calls a tool, reads the result, decides what to do next, and may check or revise its work. Each model interaction can involve additional input and output tokens, including context carried forward between steps.

That workflow is a plausible reason for higher token volume per task, not proof that every agent follows the same pattern or that a longer run produces a better result. AI FrontPage reproduces an explanation attributed to an a16z post: agents “iterate (and iterate) towards a goal,” progressively reading and writing as they work. Because the original post could not be directly verified in the reporting, this point is best treated as an explanation reported by AI FrontPage, rather than as an independently confirmed methodology. - How OpenRouter classifies a request as “agentic” or “human,” or how it attributes tokens to those categories.
- How many AI agents or human users generated the traffic.
- Whether the same ratio or growth rate applies to other model providers and routing platforms.
- Whether the additional token use led to more successful work, higher productivity, or greater economic value.
- A reliable cost comparison; the reported cached-prompt share is not itself a total-cost figure.
The underlying a16z/OpenRouter chart and classification methodology were not available in the cited secondary reports. Daily AI Roundup and AI FrontPage attribute their figures to that chart, but their coverage does not resolve the methodological questions. Daily AI Roundup; AI FrontPage

How to read the headline
The defensible takeaway is narrow but meaningful: on OpenRouter, reported agentic token traffic had risen sharply and was nearly five times the volume attributed to human users by August 2026. That points to heavier model usage in the traffic classified as agentic on that platform. It does not show that agents outnumber people, that the entire AI market has reached the same point, or that more tokens mean better outcomes.
