AI agents became prominent quickly because large language models could be connected to tools and interfaces, letting software attempt multi-step tasks instead of only answering questions. The idea is older than the recent wave; what changed was its visibility and accessibility. That surge in attention has moved faster than proven, large-scale deployment.
What counts as an AI agent?
“AI agent” covers a range of systems, so the label alone does not tell you how autonomous a product is. A useful working definition is software that interprets context, makes decisions or plans, and takes actions through outputs or tools. The research survey The Rise and Potential of Large Language Model Based Agents describes agents as entities that sense an environment, decide, and act.
LangChain uses a narrower software definition in its 2024 State of AI Agents report: an agent is “a system that uses an LLM to decide the control flow of an application.” In practice, one product may automate a tightly bounded workflow, while another attempts a longer sequence of tool-using tasks. An answer-only chatbot is not necessarily an agent; the distinction is whether the model helps determine and carry out actions, rather than simply produce a response.
What changed to make agents visible?
AI-agent research predates the recent product wave. The shift was that general-purpose language models could be placed in a loop: interpret a request, choose a step, call a tool, inspect the result, and continue or hand control back. Natural-language instructions made this easier to demonstrate without asking users to specify every operation in advance.

Several public milestones helped turn that capability into a recognizable product and platform category:
- 2024: Agent frameworks and terminology moved beyond niche discussion. LangChain’s report documented that shift among its own respondents, not all companies.
- January 2025: OpenAI introduced Operator, a U.S. Pro-user research preview that could use a browser to click, type, and scroll. The company described it as an early preview with limitations. On July 17, 2025, OpenAI said Operator had been integrated into ChatGPT as ChatGPT agent. OpenAI’s Operator announcement
- March 2025: OpenAI announced developer building blocks including the Responses API, web and file search, computer use, an Agents SDK, and tools for observing workflows. Its announcement also noted that building production-ready agents could require custom orchestration and substantial prompt iteration. OpenAI’s agent-development tools announcement
These examples made agents legible to both consumers and developers: the concept could be seen as a product feature, and as a platform on which to build software.

Why did the term spread so quickly?
No single cause has been established, but the evidence points to several reinforcing factors:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Outcome-oriented interaction: People can describe a goal in ordinary language rather than program each step themselves.
- Visible tool use: Browser and computer interaction makes a multi-step attempt easy to show, even when the task still needs supervision.
- High-profile launches: Consumer-facing demonstrations and developer APIs gave the term concrete examples and a platform story.
- A broad umbrella: “Agent” can describe systems with very different levels of autonomy, so limited workflow automation and more ambitious tool-using systems enter the same conversation.
McKinsey’s 2025 technology trends report captured the jump in attention: related news and search interest was relatively low in 2024 but grew faster than any other trend it measured. It also recorded $1.1 billion in agentic-AI equity investment in 2024 and a 985% rise in related job postings from 2023 to 2024. Those figures measure attention, financing, and labor-market activity—not successful deployments. McKinsey’s 2025 technology trends report

How much AI-agent adoption is real?
Surveys show a gap between interest, pilots, and scaled use. The figures below describe different populations and definitions, so they should not be read as one continuous trend line.
| Source and survey | Reported finding | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| McKinsey, 2025 global survey | 23% said their organization was scaling an agentic AI system somewhere in the enterprise; another 39% said it had begun experimenting. No more than 10% reported scaling agents in any single business function. | Organization-reported experimentation and scaling; most organizations remained in experimentation or piloting for AI overall. McKinsey’s 2025 State of AI survey |
| Gartner, 360 IT application leaders at organizations with at least 250 employees in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific; surveyed May–June 2025 | 75% said they were piloting, deploying, or had deployed some form of agents. Separately, 15% were considering, piloting, or deploying fully autonomous agents. | The two percentages refer to different categories: any form of agent versus fully autonomous agents. Just 19% reported high or complete trust in vendors’ ability to provide adequate hallucination protection. Gartner’s 2025 survey release |
| Gartner, 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey | 17% of organizations had deployed agents; more than 60% expected to do so within two years. | A separate survey with a different population and field period, not directly comparable with Gartner’s 2025 IT application leader survey. Gartner placed agentic AI at the “Peak of Inflated Expectations.” Gartner’s 2026 survey article |
| LangChain, 2024 report respondents | 51% said they were using agents in production; 78% had active plans to implement them. | A different respondent group and agent definition from broad enterprise surveys; not a definitive global adoption rate. LangChain’s 2024 report |
McKinsey’s figures distinguish broad enterprise activity from expansion in a specific function: an organization can be experimenting somewhere without having a scaled workflow. Gartner’s 2025 figures likewise show why “agents” and “fully autonomous agents” should not be treated as synonyms.

Why hasn’t attention translated into broad autonomy?
Using an agent in a pilot is not the same as trusting it to run a consequential workflow without close oversight. The obstacles named in Gartner’s 2025 survey include governance, technology maturity, agent sprawl, vendor trust, and organizational readiness. The finding that only 19% of surveyed leaders had high or complete trust in vendors’ hallucination protection underscores the reliability concern.
More autonomous systems also have more opportunities to take an incorrect step across a chain of actions. A fluent response does not by itself demonstrate that the system selected the right tool, interpreted its output correctly, or completed the requested task. Product announcements establish that capabilities are being offered; they do not establish dependable performance at scale.
What “everywhere” means—and what it doesn’t
“Everywhere” is best understood as a description of visibility: agents entered product announcements, developer platforms, investment discussions, job postings, and enterprise pilots in a short period. It does not mean every organization has deployed them, or that a typical agent can reliably act without supervision. The available surveys support rapid attention and substantial experimentation, alongside a much smaller and uneven record of scaling.
The practical way to assess any claim about an agent is to ask what actions it can take, which tools it can use, how much human approval is required, and whether the claim concerns a demo, pilot, production workflow, or deployment at scale. Those distinctions reveal more than the label “agent” alone.
