A VPS can keep an AI agent available after your laptop sleeps or goes offline, making it useful for scheduled work, webhooks, and other tasks that must run independently of your device. But a VPS is not technically required for every long-lived agent: event-driven systems can pause between tasks and resume with durable state. Nor does continuous uptime make an agent learn or improve by itself. Runtime, memory, and the agent’s improvement process are separate design choices.
What does always-on hosting solve?
A laptop-hosted agent depends on the laptop staying awake, connected, and running the required software. If the machine sleeps or goes offline, the process cannot continue acting in the background. A hosted runtime, such as a VPS, can remain available to run scheduled tasks or receive webhooks while the operator’s device is unavailable. Webdock describes its VPS as an isolated environment for continuously running processes and persistent files, while noting that customers remain responsible for installation, keys, and updates: Webdock’s AI-agent VPS overview.
This is the practical reason behind the question, “Does my agent keep its data between sessions?”—a phrase used in Hermes documentation. Keeping data and keeping a process active are not the same thing. Persistent files may survive a restart even when no agent is executing; an active process may still lose its in-memory context when it stops.
Separate uptime, memory, and self-improvement
Runtime availability
Runtime availability answers whether the agent can take action at a given time. A continuously running VPS can support work that must remain reachable or execute on a schedule without relying on a personal computer being awake.

Durable memory
Memory answers what information survives between sessions or process restarts. Microsoft, Anthropic, and Couchbase document approaches that use a persistent memory store or persistence layer for cross-session recall. That store must be deliberately connected to the agent; simply renting a VPS or saving files does not create a useful memory system.
Self-improvement
Self-improvement is the application’s process for learning from outcomes, evaluating changes, and deciding whether to update its behavior or software. Hosting can provide a place and time for that process to run, but the available infrastructure documentation does not establish that uptime alone makes an agent improve—or that its improvements are safe. Couchbase, for example, describes its Agent Memory service as handling storage and retrieval, not the agent’s reasoning about how to use memories: Couchbase Agent Memory.

Which architecture fits the workload?
| Architecture | Good fit | Trade-offs to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| VPS or hosted agent instance | Scheduled tasks, webhooks, and work expected to continue while a laptop is offline | You may still maintain the agent, credentials, updates, backups, and recovery. Compute can incur cost while idle; check provider terms and recovery options. |
| Durable event-driven agent platform | Bursty workloads that can sleep between events while retaining state | You must adapt to the platform’s state, execution, and event model, and confirm which tasks can safely pause and resume. |
| Persistent memory store with a local or hosted runtime | Cross-session recall of preferences, project facts, and other durable context | A memory store does not keep the agent executing. Plan permissions, data ownership, retention, and recovery. |
Cloudflare’s Long-running agents documentation describes a durable event-driven alternative: agents can hibernate and wake in response to events while retaining state. Its concise distinction is: “Agents are durable identities, not always-on processes.” The documentation, last updated August 20, 2026, also cautions that “In-memory variables, timers, open fetches, and local closures do not survive eviction.” Design work that may be interrupted around durable state and resumable operations rather than relying on an in-memory process remaining alive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCloudflare illustrates the cost trade-off with a scenario in which an agent is dormant 99% of the time and active 1%: on a continuously billed server, the example still incurs the server’s full-time cost. It also describes 10,000 agents active 1% of the time as roughly 100 active at any moment. These are provider examples, not measured market-wide workload statistics. They show why a mostly idle, event-driven workload may suit a platform that can sleep between events better than a dedicated always-on VM.

Make persistent memory useful—and trustworthy
Connect and verify the memory layer
Microsoft’s hosted-agent quickstart describes provisioning a semantic memory store, connecting it to an agent, and configuring an embedding deployment and project permissions. It warns that a missing required OpenAI role can make memory writes fail with a 401 response, leaving the store empty. Verify that writes and later retrievals actually work; the presence of a storage resource is not proof that memories are being saved. Microsoft marks some items in the documentation as preview, so check the current status before depending on a specific feature: Microsoft’s hosted-agent memory guide.
Control what can change stored memories
Anthropic documents mounting a memory store into a session and versioning changes. It also warns that prompt injection in untrusted input can write malicious content to a read-write store. Use read-only access for reference material the agent should consult but not modify, and restrict write access to the workflows and inputs that should be allowed to update memory: Anthropic’s memory documentation.

Decide whether you need a VPS
- Identify when the agent must act. If it needs to run on a schedule, receive webhooks, or stay available while your computer is offline, a hosted runtime is useful. If tasks can wait for an event and safely resume, a durable event-driven platform may avoid paying for idle compute.
- Specify what must survive. List the state, files, and memories that must remain available after a process ends. Choose a durable storage or memory layer rather than assuming process uptime provides reliable recall.
- Plan interruption and recovery. For event-driven execution, determine what happens if a task is paused mid-operation. For a VPS, check how you will back up data, restore the service, and rotate credentials.
- Set operational and security boundaries. Decide who installs updates, manages API credentials, controls memory writes, and can access stored data. Treat untrusted input as a potential memory-poisoning risk if the agent can write to its store.
- Compare costs against activity. A continuously running instance may be straightforward for steady workloads, but can spend resources while idle. For sparse work, compare that with the platform and engineering effort required to hibernate, retain state, and resume correctly.
What a VPS does not provide automatically
- Automatic installation or maintenance: Webdock says customers handle installation, API keys, and updates.
- Reliable cross-session recall: Choose and configure a durable memory layer, then test that it saves and retrieves the right information.
- Safe learning: Define evaluation, approval, and rollback for behavioral or software changes; persistent execution is not a safety mechanism.
- Backups and recovery: Confirm how data can be restored and how the agent will resume after an outage or failed update.
