An AI-agent sandbox is only as safe as the files, credentials, tools, and network routes exposed to it. Agent-generated code can use whatever its execution environment can reach, so security depends on deliberately limiting those resources, separating workloads, and keeping high-value control functions outside the sandbox.
What an AI-agent sandbox actually isolates
A sandbox is an execution boundary around code produced or run on an agent’s behalf. Depending on the product, it may restrict filesystem paths, operating-system capabilities, installed tools, network connections, process lifetime, or access to other jobs. It does not automatically make code harmless. If a task can read a mounted folder, use an injected environment variable, or open an allowed network connection, agent-generated code can generally attempt to use it.
OpenAI’s official guidance states: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” That sentence is the right starting assumption for threat modeling. Treat files, credentials, tools, and network destinations as separate permissions rather than as one abstract “sandbox” setting.

- Filesystem: Which directories and devices are mounted, and which are readable or writable?
- Credentials: Which tokens, certificates, SSH keys, cloud roles, or environment variables can code inspect?
- Network: Which component makes outbound requests, and which destinations are reachable?
- Workload isolation: Can another user, job, or agent access the same files, processes, credentials, or persistent storage?
Vendor defaults differ by product surface and can change over time. Verify the effective policy for the exact workspace, operating mode, and run instead of assuming that a setting from a local tool applies to a hosted one.

How should I restrict an AI agent’s permissions?
Start with least privilege: grant only the paths, commands, packages, and destinations required for the task. A code-generation task that edits one repository does not need an entire home directory, every repository on a machine, or unrestricted internet access.
Build a task-specific permission map
- Write down the files the task must read.
- List the files it must create or modify.
- Identify commands and interpreters it genuinely needs.
- List external services and exact endpoints required for those commands.
- Mark every permission that would expose personal, customer, production, or regulatory data.
- Remove anything not justified by that list, then test the workflow with the reduced policy.
Use separate read and write scopes. A documentation task may need read access to source files but should write only to a generated-output directory. A migration task may need a database connection, but its role should not also be able to administer users or alter unrelated databases.
Check effective defaults, not marketing labels
GitHub’s documentation for local Copilot sandboxing describes the current working directory as readable and writable by default, with additional repository-related access in defined cases. That is a product-specific example, not a universal rule. The same documentation distinguishes local and cloud policy settings, so changing one does not necessarily change the other.

Filesystem permissions: practical controls
Mount narrow workspaces
Mount a temporary workspace containing only the files needed for the job. Avoid broad home-directory mounts and shared project roots when a subdirectory is sufficient. If the agent needs reference data, mount it read-only. Keep secrets, browser profiles, SSH directories, package-manager credentials, and unrelated repositories outside the mount.

Separate read, write, and execute rights
Read-only source mounts reduce accidental modification and limit the impact of malicious instructions embedded in files. Give write access to a separate output directory, then review or promote those outputs through a trusted step. Where supported, use a non-privileged user, disable device access, and prevent access to host sockets such as container or orchestration control sockets.
Control persistence
Ephemeral workspaces reduce leftover data after a run, but they do not prevent exfiltration during the run. Decide what survives: source changes, logs, caches, package downloads, and generated artifacts. Scrub temporary files and logs that may contain private content before storing them in a shared artifact system.
Can an AI agent read secrets in its sandbox?
Yes, if a secret is injected into a file, environment variable, mounted credential store, process argument, or tool response that the agent can inspect. A secret manager protects a value while it remains in the manager; once the value is placed in an agent-readable environment, generated code may be able to print, copy, or transmit it.
Keep application credentials out of the workspace
Prefer a trusted proxy or server that performs the sensitive operation on the agent’s behalf. The proxy can authenticate to an external service, enforce an approved-host list, validate the requested operation, and return only the minimum result. This keeps the long-lived application key outside the sandbox.
For hosted sandbox workflows, official guidance recommends vault-backed secrets and a proxy that supplies real credentials only for approved hosts. For SDK-based workflows, use the provider’s native secret mechanism and do not put credentials in prompts, instructions, task files, manifests, generated source, or artifacts.

Separate environment credentials from application credentials
An environment-connection key and an application API key serve different purposes. OpenAI’s self-hosted guidance notes that an environment key may be readable by agent-generated code while permitting only environment connection operations; the application key should remain outside the sandbox. Apply the same separation to other systems: use a narrowly scoped credential for starting or attaching to an environment, and keep production-service credentials in trusted infrastructure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteScope, monitor, and rotate
- Use short-lived tokens where the provider supports them.
- Restrict methods, resources, and hosts, not merely the token’s name.
- Prevent secrets from appearing in command-line arguments, debug logs, and generated artifacts.
- Monitor proxy calls and unusual volume or destinations.
- Revoke or rotate credentials immediately when exposure is suspected.
Never assume that prompt instructions such as “do not reveal the key” are an access-control mechanism. Generated code can ignore natural-language instructions.
How should I restrict network access?
Use an allowlist of approved destinations whenever the workflow can function without general internet access. Include protocol, hostname, port, and, where practical, specific API paths. Block direct access to private address ranges, metadata services, local administration interfaces, and unrelated internal networks unless the task demonstrably requires them.
Identify where each connection originates
Network rules must match the component that opens the connection. OpenAI distinguishes executor MCP connections, which originate from the user’s environment, from remote MCP connections, which originate from OpenAI’s service. An allowlist built for one origin may fail—or allow too much—for the other. Document whether a request comes from the developer workstation, a self-hosted runner, a cloud executor, or a remote tool service.
Use a controlled egress path
Route outbound traffic through a firewall, proxy, or gateway that logs destination, identity, action, and result. Require authentication at the gateway rather than distributing broad credentials to every job. Deny by default, then add endpoints as the workflow proves they are needed. Test DNS, redirects, IPv6, and alternate hostnames; an allowlist that covers only one hostname may not cover the actual connection path.

How do I isolate agent workloads?
Separate users and jobs whenever they must not share data. OpenAI’s self-hosted guidance warns that agents sharing an environment can access the same files, credentials, and other resources. Treat tenancy and job separation as security requirements, not deployment conveniences.
Choose an isolation unit
- Per-user environment: Suitable when one user owns all data in a session and collaboration is not required.
- Per-job environment: Stronger separation for untrusted inputs, batch processing, or customer-specific work.
- Per-tenant environment: Useful when multiple jobs from one customer may share caches but must remain separate from other customers.
Use distinct identities, storage namespaces, network policies, and secret scopes for each unit. Do not rely on directory names alone if jobs share a host account or privileged service.
Consider side channels and shared state
Isolation includes caches, temporary directories, process lists, logs, package indexes, clipboard services, and mounted sockets. A job that cannot read another job’s source files may still learn information through shared artifacts or logs. Clear or namespace these resources, and avoid sharing writable caches across trust boundaries unless their contents are safe to disclose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What belongs outside the sandbox?
Keep control-plane responsibilities in trusted application infrastructure whenever possible:
- Authentication and account recovery
- Billing and quota decisions
- Approval workflows and policy changes
- Audit-log retention and tamper protection
- Credential issuance, rotation, and revocation
- Tool routing and high-risk action authorization
Let the sandbox perform bounded computation, file transformation, package installation, and artifact creation. Before moving outputs from a workspace that could read private documents or mounted storage, inspect them for embedded secrets and unintended personal or customer data.

Hosted, local, and self-hosted sandboxes
There is no universal “most secure” option established by the available guidance. Compare the actual boundary and operating responsibilities for the product surface you use.
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Compute operator | Who administers the host, hypervisor, images, patches, and incident response? |
| Workload separation | Are users and jobs placed in separate environments, identities, storage, and network policies? |
| Filesystem defaults | Which paths are mounted automatically, and are they read-only or writable? |
| Network defaults | Is outbound traffic blocked, proxied, or open by default? Which component originates it? |
| Credential injection | Where are secrets stored, when are they injected, and can agent code read them? |
| Persistence | What survives termination: disks, logs, caches, artifacts, or snapshots? |
| Policy enforcement | Can users override controls, and are changes logged and reviewed? |
| Audit and recovery | Can you reconstruct actions, revoke access, and restore clean state after a compromise? |
GitHub describes local sandboxing as off by default in the Copilot surfaces covered by its documentation, while its cloud sandbox is described as an isolated, ephemeral Linux environment and marked public preview. Those are time-sensitive product facts; verify the current status and settings before relying on them. OpenAI documentation likewise describes both hosted and self-hosted approaches, with different responsibilities for infrastructure and credentials.
A practical implementation checklist
- Classify the task. Mark inputs, outputs, trust level, required tools, and whether untrusted files or instructions are involved.
- Create a minimal workspace. Mount only required paths; make reference material read-only and outputs separate.
- Run as a non-privileged identity. Remove host sockets, device access, and unnecessary administrative capabilities.
- Set egress rules. Allow only documented destinations and route traffic through a logging gateway where possible.
- Keep application keys out. Use a proxy or trusted server for operations requiring long-lived credentials.
- Separate jobs. Allocate distinct storage, identities, temporary directories, and secret scopes for workloads that must not share data.
- Define artifact handling. Scan outputs and logs for secrets or private data before they leave the workspace.
- Test denial paths. Confirm that forbidden files, hosts, commands, and credentials are actually inaccessible.
- Log security-relevant events. Record policy version, image or runtime version, tool calls, network destinations, approvals, and termination events.
- Prepare recovery. Have a process to revoke keys, destroy the environment, preserve necessary evidence, and rerun from a clean image.
What to do after suspected exposure
Stop the affected run and preserve the minimum logs needed for investigation without copying sensitive data into a wider audience. Revoke or rotate any credential the environment could read, including tokens returned by tools. Disable network routes that are not essential, destroy the workspace if persistence is not required for forensics, and review proxy, storage, and artifact logs for unauthorized access. Rebuild from a known-good image and re-run only after the permission map has been corrected.
Frequently asked questions
Does an ephemeral sandbox make secret handling unnecessary?
No. Ephemeral storage limits what remains after termination, but a secret can still be read and transmitted while the job is running. Use scoped credentials and controlled proxies even for short-lived environments.
Can a read-only mount prevent data theft?
It prevents modification of that mount, not reading or copying its contents. Pair read-only access with network egress controls and output review when the files are sensitive.
Should local and cloud policies be treated as equivalent?
No. Products can expose separate settings, defaults, and enforcement paths for local and cloud execution. Verify each surface independently.
Who should approve a high-risk tool call?
A trusted control-plane service should enforce approval and authorization. Do not place the final approval decision solely inside the same sandbox that executes the requested action.
