Giving an AI agent more context can make it perform worse when the added information is irrelevant, hard to find, or buried in a long working history. A larger context window tells you how much text a model can accept—not how consistently it can use every part of that text. The effect depends on the model, task, evidence placement, and agent design; more context is not automatically harmful, either.

What “more context” means for an AI agent

An agent’s context is the information available while it decides what to do. Depending on the system, that may include the user’s instructions, previous conversation, tool calls and results, retrieved documents, and summaries of earlier steps.

Two questions are easy to confuse:

  • Capacity: How much text can the model accept in its context window?
  • Usability: How reliably can it find and apply the relevant information among everything it receives?

A high capacity does not guarantee consistent use of information at every position. In a study of multi-document question answering and key-value retrieval, Liu and colleagues found that evaluated models often used evidence more effectively when it appeared near the beginning or end of a long input than when it was in the middle. The pattern is often called “lost in the middle”; it describes results on the study’s tasks and models, not a universal curve for every current system. How extra context can make an agent less effective

Relevant evidence becomes harder to locate

When useful material is mixed into a large input, the agent may fail to retrieve or apply it even though it is technically within the context window. In Liu et al.’s GPT-3.5-Turbo multi-document question-answering experiments, performance in the worst-case settings with 20 and 30 documents fell by more than 20% relative to the paper’s comparison. The authors also cite 56.1% as the model’s closed-book performance for that task. Those figures belong to that paper’s particular evaluation; they are not expected results for other models, tasks, or deployments.

Agent history grows as the system acts

Unlike a one-shot prompt, an agent’s working state can accumulate with each action, observation, and retrieved result. LOCA-bench was designed to study agent performance as environment context grows while keeping task semantics fixed. Its authors report that performance generally degrades as environment states become more complex, and that context-management techniques can improve success. The publication page does not state a specific effect size, so the finding should not be turned into a numerical prediction for another agent. See the LOCA-bench paper.

Irrelevant retrieval can interfere with later reasoning

More retrieved material is not necessarily more helpful. A 2026 study of multi-turn search agents reports that irrelevant documents can distract the agent and impair reliability and efficiency. In the authors’ experiments, interference primarily arose from the latest retrieved documents. That is a finding about their study, not a rule that the newest result is always the source of an agent’s mistake. The paper also evaluates a context-refinement approach. Read the ACL 2026 paper.

“Not enough context” is a separate failure mode

Context anxiety is not the same as distraction from irrelevant information. A 2026 ICML paper studies cases where reasoning models stop early because they doubt they have enough context or tokens, despite having the capability to solve the task. The authors connect this partly to difficulty estimating how many tokens a task requires. This is a distinct problem from adding too much irrelevant material. See the ICML paper.

What studies say about managing context

Refine what retrieval adds

Instead of appending every search result to the agent’s working state, a system can filter or refine retrieved material for the current task. Xue and colleagues report improvements from a distillation-based context refiner in their multi-turn search-agent study. The result supports testing refinement in similar settings; it does not establish that filtering will help every retrieval system.

Summarize long interaction histories carefully

One approach is to periodically compress tool-use history into a summary intended to preserve details relevant to later decisions. Lu and colleagues’ SUmmarization augmented Policy Optimization (SUPO) study reports higher success on interactive function-calling and search tasks while maintaining the same or lower working-context length than its baselines. This is evidence for the method in those evaluated tasks, not proof that any summary will retain every important instruction or fact. Read the SUPO paper.

Training can improve long-context use

Context limitations are not necessarily fixed. Microsoft Research’s NeurIPS 2024 IN2 work trained models on synthesized long-context question-answer examples requiring attention to short segments and integration across segments. The authors report that FILM-7B robustly retrieved information from different positions in a 32K-token context window. On the reported evaluations, NarrativeQA F1 rose from 23.5 to 26.9, while MMLU accuracy changed from 59.3 to 59.2. These are results for the named model and tasks, not a general claim that long-context training improves every benchmark. See Microsoft Research’s publication page.

How to tell whether more context is helping your agent

There is no established token threshold that is safe across models and agent tasks. Evaluate context changes on the system’s actual workload rather than assuming that a larger advertised window will improve results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the task and baseline. Record the agent’s model, task, context construction, and evaluation method, then measure outcomes such as task success, accuracy, reliability, and efficiency.
  2. Check evidence placement. Test whether the agent can use important information when it appears near the beginning, middle, or end of the context.
  3. Vary context composition. Compare focused, relevant material with versions that include irrelevant or redundant retrieval. This helps distinguish a capacity problem from interference caused by what the agent was given.
  4. Compare management methods. Where appropriate, compare raw history with retrieval, refinement, or a summary. Check whether compression preserves the exact details needed for later decisions.
  5. Keep the goal and constraints recoverable. As working history grows, test whether the agent still follows the original task and constraints after many tool calls.

These checks follow from the cited studies; they are evaluation suggestions, not universal rules for improving every agent.

Why one long-context result does not settle the question

Long-context behavior varies with the evidence position, context composition, task, and model. A single-step retrieval benchmark may reveal position sensitivity, while a multi-turn agent benchmark tests the extra effects of accumulating actions and observations. A context-refinement study measures something different again from a training study that changes how a model handles long inputs.

When comparing results, look for the task being measured, whether the context contains relevant or irrelevant material, where evidence appears, what context-management method is used, and which outcome is reported. A model’s context-window specification alone cannot answer whether it will reliably use information throughout that window.
