Unfamiliar sign-ins, changed security settings or unexpected AI usage are reasons to check your account—but none proves it was hacked by itself. If you suspect someone else has access, secure the account and its sign-in provider, end active sessions, and report activity you cannot explain. For ChatGPT, start with Settings → Security and login. Open the service’s official settings or help center directly; do not use links in unsolicited security alerts.

What can signal unauthorized access?

Check your account if you find something you did not initiate, such as:

  • A sign-in, device or location you do not recognize.
  • An unfamiliar event in security history, or an active session you cannot explain.
  • A changed password, recovery number, MFA method or passkey.
  • Unexpected API usage, account activity or settings changes.

These are prompts to investigate, not a diagnosis. OpenAI says its security alerts are often cautionary and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. A legitimate sign-in from an unusual location, concurrent sessions, approximate location data or unavailable device details can complicate interpretation. Google and Microsoft also describe unusual sign-ins that can have benign explanations, including travel or a newly connected app. Verify the event in the account itself rather than trusting an alert link.

What should you do first for a ChatGPT or OpenAI account?

  1. Open ChatGPT directly and inspect security history. Go to Settings → Security and login → Security history. Check the event type, time, location and device where available; some details may be approximate or missing. OpenAI’s account security guidance explains the checks.
  2. End sessions you do not recognize. Review Active sessions and log out of all sessions if you suspect unauthorized access. Do not assume that enabling MFA will end existing logins.
  3. Change an exposed password. If you sign in with an OpenAI password and it may have been exposed, reused or shared, change it promptly. OpenAI says its direct password-change flow logs current sessions out within 30 minutes; that stated behavior is specific to the direct password flow, not a guarantee for every sign-in path. Use OpenAI’s unrecognized-activity instructions.
  4. Secure the sign-in provider if you use social login. If you enter through Google or Microsoft, reset the password for that linked account too. OpenAI’s guidance for unrecognized activity directs social-login users to reset the provider password.
  5. Protect API access, if applicable. Delete exposed OpenAI API keys, check API usage for activity you did not make, and keep relevant details for support.
  6. Report activity you cannot explain. Contact OpenAI Support through a new chat in the official Help Center or follow OpenAI’s unauthorized-activity reporting flow. Avoid responding to unsolicited messages that ask for credentials.
  7. Enable MFA after the account is secured. OpenAI advises changing an exposed password and logging out of all sessions before enabling MFA. Its security guidance explicitly warns that MFA does not cancel existing sessions.

How do you secure Google or Microsoft sign-in?

These steps apply when the provider account is also your sign-in method for an AI service. Menus and recovery rules vary by service, so use that service’s official instructions for any additional steps.

Google account

If someone else may be signed in, Google recommends changing your Google password, changing any reused password on other sites, and removing unfamiliar signed-in devices. Review critical security settings for changes you did not make. Follow Google’s compromised Google Account guidance directly.

Microsoft account

Review Recent activity and mark or secure events you do not recognize. An unusual-sign-in notice can also be triggered by legitimate circumstances, such as travel or a newly connected app, so inspect the event before concluding that the account was compromised. Microsoft’s Recent activity instructions explain how to review it.

For a compromised Microsoft account on Windows, Microsoft’s recovery guidance says to make sure antivirus protection is current and run a full scan before changing the Microsoft account password. Afterward, check connected accounts, email forwarding and automatic replies. This is Microsoft’s recovery advice for that account and environment, not a universal requirement for every AI account.

How can you reduce the chance of another account takeover?

  • Use a unique password for each password-based account; a password manager can help you create and keep track of them.
  • Turn on MFA where the service offers it, and keep recovery details current.
  • Review registered devices, active sessions and security history when something looks wrong, and periodically check them even when it does not.
  • Be cautious with emails or messages asking you to sign in. Navigate to the official service yourself instead of following an unsolicited link.
  • Where supported, consider a passkey or physical security key as a preventive sign-in option. OpenAI’s guidance mentions physical security keys, including YubiKey, but a key does not recover an account that is already compromised.

Consider the recovery trade-off before enabling Advanced Account Security

OpenAI describes Advanced Account Security as an option for eligible consumer ChatGPT users. It requires passkeys or physical security keys, disables password-based sign-in and email/SMS recovery, and does not offer Support-assisted recovery to enrolled users. OpenAI says it is unavailable to Enterprise users, enterprise-managed accounts and accounts on enterprise-managed domains. Review the current eligibility and setup guidance before enrolling, and make sure you understand how you would regain access if your passkey or key were unavailable. This differs from standard MFA, which adds a sign-in factor but does not itself end existing sessions.

If the service is not ChatGPT

Do not assume another AI service has the same menus, session controls or recovery behavior as OpenAI. Go to that service’s official account settings and help center directly, follow its security and recovery instructions, and secure any Google, Microsoft or other identity-provider account used to sign in.
