An agricultural pesticide spraying robot is a ground vehicle or aerial drone that navigates a crop area and applies crop-protection products, sometimes using sensors or maps to control where and how much it sprays. These systems can automate parts of crop spraying, but “robot” does not mean fully unattended: the platform, crop, terrain, application method, operator oversight and local rules all matter.

What is an agricultural pesticide spraying robot?

It is a robotic or autonomous platform equipped to apply pesticides or other crop-protection sprays. The category includes very different machines: unmanned tractors, tracked vineyard vehicles, orchard sprayers, multipurpose field robots and aerial spraying drones. They are related by their task, not by a single design or set of capabilities.

For example, the EU-funded SCORPION project describes a modular unmanned tractor for precision spraying and sensing, initially focused on steep-slope vineyards. Yanmar’s technical review describes its YV01 spraying robot as developed for French vineyards, with the stated goal of helping prevent pesticide exposure and worker injuries on steep slopes. In orchards, SINOSO markets SOROB 200 and 400 ground robots. C-DAC describes SAMA-DHAAN as a four-wheeled platform for paddy farms that can inspect crops and spray pesticides. Aerial systems include XAG’s P Series plant-protection UAS and LahakX’s autonomous drone fleet.

How do agricultural spraying robots work?

A robot needs more than autonomous movement to apply spray precisely. Its navigation, crop or target information, sensors and spray hardware must work together. Depending on the system, it may follow a planned route, detect obstacles, vary spray output, or direct application to selected plants or areas.

  • Payload Capacity: 8 Gallons / 67 lbs
  • Spray Efficiency: 30 – 38 Acres per hour
  • Spray Width: 26 – 33 Feet
  • Max Take-off Weight: 155 lbs
  • Flight Speed: 0 – 27 mph

Navigation and target information

Platforms may use localization sensors or satellite-based positioning to follow rows or mapped routes. The SCORPION project reports work on fused navigation sensors; SINOSO lists RTK navigation for its orchard robots. LahakX describes mapping-based spray planning and obstacle detection. These are system descriptions, not evidence that every machine navigates equally well in every field.

Spray control and application

Application hardware can include adjustable atomization, oscillating nozzles, variable-rate flow control, or spot-spraying capability. XAG describes adjustable rotary atomization on its P Series. SINOSO describes adaptive spraying and oscillating nozzles. LahakX describes both spot and broadcast spraying. The practical result depends on how a particular system senses or maps the target and controls its spray under actual crop and weather conditions.

Autonomy still needs oversight

Autonomy can cover route following, piloting or spray decisions, but the available descriptions do not establish that all products operate without supervision. Buyers should clarify what the machine handles itself, which tasks require an operator, how it responds to obstacles or faults, and how application is monitored.

Ground robots and spraying drones suit different jobs

Ground robots travel through crop rows or across fields; spraying UAS apply products from the air. Neither form is a universal substitute for the other. Crop layout, canopy, terrain, maneuvering space and the rules governing the application method all affect suitability.

System type Example in the source descriptions Fit to investigate
Modular ground tractor SCORPION project platform, focused initially on steep-slope vineyards Permanent crops, with fit dependent on row layout, slope and project or product availability
Vineyard ground robot Yanmar YV01, described as developed for French vineyards Vineyard work on slopes; confirm local terrain capability and operating requirements
Orchard ground robot SINOSO SOROB 200 and 400 Orchards; check row spacing, canopy, spray configuration and maneuvering room
Multipurpose field robot C-DAC SAMA-DHAAN for paddy farms Paddy operations where inspection and spraying are relevant; verify field conditions and intended use
Aerial spraying UAS XAG P Series and LahakX fleet Applications suited to aerial operation, subject to crop needs, operator capability and local UAS rules

The examples are not a comparative field trial, and a product’s stated crop focus does not by itself establish suitability for a specific farm.

What performance claims and specifications tell you

Published figures need context. Vendor claims are not independently measured results, and specifications describe a platform rather than proving spray effectiveness.

  • Efficiency: Maximizes liquid flow rate Compatible with enhanced spray efficiency in agricultural applications.
  • XAG’s undated P Series product page claims a reduction of “30% of pesticide use” and “90% of water waste.” These are vendor-stated claims, not universal or independently established outcomes.
  • SINOSO’s undated product page claims “40%” chemical-use reduction for the SOROB 200. This is a vendor claim.
  • C-DAC’s undated SAMA-DHAAN product information lists a 150 kg payload design and a 48 V, 80 Ah battery. These are platform specifications, not measures of area coverage or spraying performance.
  • The European Commission CORDIS SCORPION fact sheet lists an EU contribution of €2,270,606. That is project funding, not a robot’s purchase price.

Yanmar’s 2025 technical review gives contextual figures of more than 7.2 million hectares of wine grapes grown worldwide and more than 200 million hectoliters of wine production. Those figures concern viticulture, not the size of the robot market.

Before relying on a savings or coverage figure, ask who measured it, in which crop and conditions, against what baseline, and whether the result applies to the specific model and configuration being considered.

How to assess whether a spraying robot fits your farm

Start with the crop and operating conditions, then test whether the platform, application system and support arrangement match them. A useful evaluation includes:

  • Crop and geometry: Identify crop type, row spacing, canopy shape and the parts of the plant that need treatment.
  • Terrain and access: Check slope, soil or field conditions, turning space, row width and obstacles against the machine’s stated operating limits.
  • Platform and rules: Decide whether a ground vehicle or aerial UAS fits the task. Confirm the rules that apply to the method, operator and location.
  • Navigation and supervision: Ask how the system localizes, detects obstacles, handles route deviations and signals a fault. Establish what an operator must monitor or control.
  • Application hardware: Confirm spray type, flow or rate control, atomization or nozzle arrangement, and whether these are suited to the crop and target.
  • Capacity and coverage: Compare payload, endurance, refill needs and expected work rate using figures for the exact configuration and conditions. Do not infer farm coverage from payload or battery specifications alone.
  • Evidence quality: Request field results relevant to your crop and conditions, including the comparison baseline and measurement method; distinguish these from vendor or project statements.
  • Deployment model and support: Compare equipment purchase with service or licensing options, and confirm local availability, maintenance, training and response arrangements.

There is no common price comparison in the available product and project descriptions. Ask vendors or service providers for current, location-specific terms and compare the total operating arrangement rather than assuming a published platform specification implies a particular cost.

Can a robot spray crops safely and legally?

Robotic application can change how a spray task is performed, but it does not remove the need to follow pesticide-label conditions or applicable local requirements. Before operation, verify rules for the crop, product, application method, operator and any autonomous or aerial equipment. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the examples described here do not establish the rules for a particular country.

Also assess worker exposure, access to the operating area, emergency stopping, obstacle response, and how the machine is supervised. Yanmar describes the YV01’s goal as helping prevent pesticide exposure and injuries on steep vineyard slopes; that stated goal should not be treated as proof of a quantified safety outcome.

Buying, hiring a service, or licensing the technology

Owning a robot is only one way to use the technology. LahakX describes spraying-as-a-service and technology licensing as options in addition to its autonomous drone fleet. Confirm current availability, geographic coverage, responsibilities, service terms and equipment configuration directly with the provider. A service model may change who supplies and operates the platform; licensing is a distinct arrangement and should not be assumed to include a machine or field service.
