AI can already help travelers explore destinations and compare trip ideas, but an itinerary suggestion is not the same as an agent authorized to buy a ticket or manage a reservation. The key question is how much authority a system has—and what happens if a booking goes wrong.
What does “agentic AI” mean for travel?
A travel chatbot can answer questions or draft an itinerary without touching a booking. An agentic system goes further when it can take actions for a traveler, potentially comparing options, selecting one, and completing a transaction. PwC describes this as an emerging direction for agent-led commerce, while IDC forecasts changes to how travel is discovered and distributed. Those industry outlooks describe a possible model; they do not establish that autonomous booking is broadly available today.
It helps to distinguish three levels of delegation:

- Action with approval: A system prepares a booking or change, but the traveler reviews and confirms it.
- Delegated transaction: The traveler authorizes the system to make a purchase or manage a booking on their behalf.
Only the last level means the AI is actually entrusted with a transaction. A polished itinerary does not prove that a tool can book, cancel, obtain a refund, or respond to a disruption.

Can AI book a vacation for you?
Potentially, if a particular service has booking access and you authorize it to act. But the available industry descriptions are not evidence that a named consumer AI agent can reliably complete every part of a trip. There is no established, comparable roster here of services that handle booking, cancellation, refunds, or flight disruptions end to end.
For a concrete service, check what it can do now rather than relying on the label “agent.” Does it only find options, submit a booking after you approve it, or have authority to charge your payment method? Can it make changes after purchase, and who is responsible for support? These are distinct capabilities, not automatic consequences of using AI.
How comfortable are travelers with AI booking?
A YouGov survey commissioned by Expedia Group asked more than 5,700 adults in the United States, United Kingdom, and India between March 10 and 25, 2026, about AI and travel booking. Its results point to a gap between using AI and trusting it with a purchase:

These figures describe that survey’s sample and field period, not all travelers or current booking behavior worldwide. Xavi Amatriain, Expedia Group’s Chief AI & Data Officer, characterized its findings this way: “Travelers don’t have a technology problem with AI. They have a trust problem.” That is an executive’s interpretation of the company’s survey, not an independent conclusion.
The same Expedia Group survey identified specific concerns: 57% cited losing control, 57% cited privacy of personal or payment details, 56% cited misuse of personal data, and 40% cited poor customer service if something went wrong after an AI purchase. The percentages are responses in that survey, not proof that every booking service has those shortcomings.
What do separate surveys say about payment delegation?
Accenture’s 2026 B2C Traveler Survey covered 5,003 travelers across 12 markets. Accenture reported that 10% would fully delegate payment execution to AI. That is a separate survey, with its own sample and question; it should not be directly compared with Expedia Group’s results as if the methods or wording were identical.

PwC’s December 2025 article on agentic commerce cited its Holiday Outlook as finding that 68% expected to use AI to compare flights and 57% expected to use AI for booking travel during the holiday season covered by that outlook. Those are stated expectations for a particular period and sample, not evidence that those travelers completed bookings through AI.

There is no blanket answer: safety depends on the service’s authority, booking terms, data practices, and support arrangements. Before granting more than suggestion-level access, check the following:
- Authorization: Is the agent only proposing an action, asking for confirmation, or allowed to purchase without another approval?
- Price and terms: Can you review the complete price, fare or room conditions, and change and cancellation rules before committing?
- Payment and personal data: What information does the service need, how does it handle it, and what controls can you set?
- Changes and disruptions: Does the provider document what the agent can do if a flight is cancelled or a schedule changes? Do not assume it can rebook or secure a refund.
- Accountability: Who can you contact if a charge, reservation, or change is wrong? Confirm whether support comes from the AI provider, the travel seller, or another party.
These checks do not guarantee a service will protect you; they help establish what you are authorizing and where responsibility sits. A travel brand’s involvement is not itself proof that a specific AI feature provides human support.

What happens if an AI booking goes wrong?
The sources cited here document traveler concerns about control and post-purchase customer service, but they do not establish a universal remedy or a standard process for correcting AI booking errors. The practical route will depend on who sold the ticket or room, whose system processed the transaction, and the applicable booking terms.
Before purchase, identify the seller shown at checkout, save the itinerary and confirmation, and note how to reach that seller. If a service will not clearly show the final itinerary, total price, terms, or support contact before it acts, keep the purchase under your own control.

Some future agent-led systems may be designed to act across booking and service workflows, but the industry outlooks cited here do not prove that consumer agents currently and reliably handle cancellations, rebooking, schedule changes, or refunds. Check the specific service’s current terms and the airline’s or travel seller’s procedures. Do not treat an AI’s ability to suggest an alternative flight as authority to change your ticket.

What to compare when choosing an AI travel service
When services with documented booking capabilities are available to compare, focus on the practical boundaries of delegation rather than the word “agent”:
- Whether it gives suggestions, acts only after confirmation, or can make a delegated purchase.
- Whether it displays the full price and the relevant fare or accommodation terms before commitment.
- Whether and how it can cancel or change a booking.
- How it handles personal and payment information.
- What it can do during a disruption, and what it cannot do.
- How to reach accountable human support when a transaction needs correction.
Amadeus Hospitality’s 2026 Global Travel Agent Report overview describes a sample of 756 travel agents across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC; the overview does not supply detailed findings that would support a consumer service ranking. More broadly, the evidence available does not support claiming that all AI travel agents can manage a trip after booking.
