For US Afterpay customers, there is no fixed maximum number of open orders stated in the official help guidance reviewed. Afterpay assesses each purchase separately, and the number of active orders may affect whether a new one is approved.
How Afterpay evaluates a new order
Open orders are one factor in a new approval decision, not a published account-wide cutoff. Afterpay says its assessment can also consider:

- How much you currently owe
- Your payment history
- How long you have had your account
- The value of the new order
- Whether you can make the first installment
Afterpay describes Available to Spend as an estimate, not a guaranteed spending limit. A displayed amount does not ensure that a particular purchase will be approved. Afterpay’s US troubleshooting guidance says that each order is assessed separately.

Afterpay says that more active orders may make its approval criteria stricter and advises customers to pay down existing orders before trying another purchase. Reducing what you owe may help, but it does not guarantee approval.

If a payment is overdue, Afterpay’s US guidance says you cannot place a new order until the overdue payment is resolved. Even with payments current, an order may be declined for other reasons, including account restrictions, a merchant’s limits, payment-method issues, or a lower per-order approval threshold on a newer account.
Does this limit apply outside the United States?
This answer reflects Afterpay’s US help guidance. Terms and approval policies may differ by country, so check the local Afterpay help pages and terms for your region rather than assuming the US guidance applies everywhere.
