Some people are using chatbots and character tools to simulate conversations with former partners. The simulation can help organize memories or rehearse what they wish they had said, but it cannot reveal an ex-partner’s real thoughts, provide consent, or deliver reliable closure. Whether it helps or harms depends largely on whether it remains a limited reflection exercise—or becomes a substitute for real relationships and support.
The phenomenon was documented through individual accounts, not a prevalence study. There is no established statistic showing how common it is.
What an “AI clone” of an ex actually is
An AI imitation is generated from material a user selects: text messages, emails, photographs, biographical details and descriptions of the person’s habits. Prompts then instruct a chatbot or image tool to respond in a particular style. The result is a prediction shaped by the supplied data and the model’s general training—not the former partner’s mind or an authenticated record of what they would say.

That distinction matters. A convincing reply can feel personal while still being invented. The system cannot confirm what the other person currently believes, whether they would consent to the simulation, or whether a conversation would have ended differently.

What the 2024 reporting describes
Ashley Bardhan’s Futurism report published February 12, 2024 describes several examples:
- An app called Talk to Your Ex was described as being on a waitlist at the time. That historical account does not establish that the app is available now.
- A Reddit user told the publication they used Yodayo’s image generator to make a picture resembling an ex and then created an AI ex-bot. This is a single reported account, not evidence of typical use or results.
- A 38-year-old interviewee identified as Jake used ChatGPT to make two versions: one offering supportive advice and another imitating behaviors he associated with his ex. Jake said the exercise helped him articulate and understand parts of the relationship. His experience is an individual account, not a clinical finding.
The report also discussed ChatGPT behavior and GPT Store rules as they were understood in February 2024. Service availability, privacy practices and platform policies can change, so those descriptions should not be treated as current terms.

When could talking to an AI version help?
Used briefly and consciously, a simulation may function like a structured writing exercise. It can give someone a way to name conflicting feelings, test how a message sounds, or examine patterns they struggled to describe during the relationship. Psychologist and relationship expert Marisa T. Cohen told Bardhan that “If the conversation enables you to better understand aspects of your relationship which you may not have fully processed, it may be able to provide you with clarity about how and why it ended.”

A useful boundary is to treat every response as a prompt for your own thinking rather than as evidence about the ex.

When can the simulation keep someone stuck?
The same interaction can reinforce attachment when the user repeatedly seeks imagined replies, edits the prompt until the ex says what they wanted, or uses the bot instead of contacting trusted people. A generated apology, explanation or declaration of love may feel like closure while leaving the underlying uncertainty untouched.
Cohen’s caution is explicit: “if a person is using technology instead of interacting with others in their environment it becomes problematic.” Warning signs include losing sleep to conversations, withdrawing from friends, escalating use after each upsetting reminder, or making decisions based on what the simulated ex supposedly “thinks.”

Consent, likeness and privacy concerns
Building a character from another person’s messages, photographs or intimate details raises questions separate from emotional usefulness. The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Media Engagement discusses reproducing a romantic partner’s likeness without consent as an ethical issue in its educational resource, “I Can’t Move On, Why Should I Have To? The Ethics of Using AI to Replicate a Romantic Relationship.” That resource is an ethics discussion, not a legal ruling; applicable law varies by location and circumstance.

Before using any tool, check what it stores, whether prompts are used for training, how deletion works and who can access shared characters or images. Avoid uploading intimate photographs, identifying documents or messages that include other people who have not agreed.

Private reflection or an AI simulation?
Neither option is a validated treatment. The practical differences are about what data is exposed and what kind of feedback is produced.

A safer way to use the idea for reflection
- Set a narrow purpose. Decide whether you are drafting an unsent message, identifying a recurring pattern or listing unanswered questions. Do not ask the system to determine what your ex “really” feels.
- Minimize the data. Start with your own summary. Remove names, contact details, intimate images and third-party messages.
- Label the output as fictional. Save notes as your interpretation, not as statements made by the former partner.
- Limit the session. A time boundary and a stopping rule can prevent an endless loop of reassurance-seeking.
- Reality-check afterward. Write down which conclusions come from verifiable events and which came only from generated dialogue.
- Reconnect with people. Discuss significant distress with a trusted person or a qualified mental-health professional rather than relying on the simulation alone.
What this evidence does—and does not—show
The Futurism article documents people experimenting with ex-partner simulations and includes Cohen’s qualified observations. It does not measure how many people do this, establish that the practice is widespread, or test whether it improves recovery. The Center for Media Engagement resource raises ethical and emotional questions, but it is not a prevalence study.
Availability and rules for Talk to Your Ex, Yodayo, ChatGPT and other named services may have changed since the 2024 accounts. Verify current terms and privacy controls directly before entering personal material.
