Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly said at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, that more than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time on an average day, and that the game has sold more than 425 million copies. Those are two different kinds of number. The 425 million figure is a cumulative count of copies sold. The 300,000 figure counts people starting the game, not copies sold per day and not active players. Both come from company statements relayed by secondary outlets, and the reporting does not explain how the daily figure was measured.
What each headline number measures
The headline mixes a sales total with an acquisition claim. Placing them side by side in one table makes the difference clear.

|---|---|---|---|
| More than 300 million copies sold | Cumulative copies sold | Mojang/Microsoft milestone, announced in 2023 and cited in a Microsoft Developer article from GDC 2024 | Company statement; the article calls Minecraft the best-selling game of all time |
| More than 425 million copies sold | Cumulative copies sold, as of the September 26, 2026 announcement | Asha Sharma at Minecraft Live, as reported by GamesRadar+ and Priori Data | Company-reported via secondary outlets; not checked against a primary transcript or audited |
| More than 300,000 people playing for the first time on an average day | People starting Minecraft for the first time, averaged per day | Asha Sharma at Minecraft Live, as reported by GamesRadar+ and Priori Data | Company-reported via secondary outlets; measurement method not disclosed |
| Daily active users | Not stated | Not stated in any of the reporting on the 2026 announcement | Not established |
The older 300 million figure does not conflict with the 425 million figure. The two statements were made at different times, so they describe different points on the same rising total.

Why a first-time player is not a sales rate
It is tempting to convert the daily figure into a yearly one. Multiplying 300,000 by 365 gives roughly 110 million, which is far more than the gap between the two cumulative totals. The gap is about 125 million copies (425 million minus 300 million). The 2023 announcement is not dated precisely in the reporting, so any per-year copy rate derived from these two numbers would be rough. The more important point is that the daily figure is not a copy count at all. It describes people trying the game, and the reporting does not say whether a first session on a shared device, a trial, or a free-to-play entry point is counted the same way as a purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Likewise, a first-time player is not an active user. Someone who starts the game on a Tuesday and never returns is counted in the daily figure, but would not appear in any measure of active players. No source in the reporting provides an active-user number for Minecraft, so readers should not substitute one.
How the figures fit together over time
| Date | Reported statement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Minecraft passed 300 million copies sold | Mojang/Microsoft milestone, cited in Microsoft Developer’s GDC 2024 article |
| 2024 | Minecraft described as operating at a scale of at least 300 million players; Microsoft’s data teams combine product, social, support, game-health, and marketing information | Microsoft Developer, GDC 2024 article |
| September 26, 2026 | More than 425 million copies sold; more than 300,000 people play for the first time on an average day | Asha Sharma at Minecraft Live, as reported by GamesRadar+ and Priori Data |
Priori Data, which compiles 2026 statistics on the game, notes that Microsoft and Xbox disclose Minecraft figures irregularly. That makes the 2026 numbers the latest public milestones rather than a scheduled series, and it means the gaps between announcements are not a reliable measure of growth speed.

Why a 17-year-old game can keep reaching new players
The reporting confirms that Minecraft keeps attracting first-time players. It does not establish why. The mechanisms below are plausible explanations and reporting angles. None is shown by the sources to be the cause of the daily figure.

Cross-generational discovery
A game that has existed for more than 17 years has had time to be passed between generations. A parent who played early versions may introduce it to a child, or a child may find it installed on a family device. Neither pattern is measured in the reporting, so this remains a hypothesis to test against any future data that breaks down new players by age.
Rank #3
Social play
Minecraft’s official overview describes global multiplayer as part of the core experience. A friend who already plays can bring a new player into a server or world. That mechanism would produce first-time starts without any marketing spend, but the sources do not quantify how many first-time players arrive this way.
Creator content
Videos, streams, and tutorials can show the game to people who have never installed it. The reporting does not attribute any share of the daily figure to creator content, so the link is a reasonable expectation rather than a documented result.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
Recurring updates
The official overview describes Minecraft as an ongoing sandbox that receives recurring game drops. Regular content gives returning players a reason to come back and gives newcomers a changing product to try. Whether updates drive first-time starts specifically, as opposed to retention, is not established by the sources.
How to check a Minecraft milestone claim
Use this checklist when a new figure appears in a headline:
Best Value
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Metric: Is the number copies sold, first-time players, or active users? Copies and first-time starts answer different questions.
- Cumulative or per period: A lifetime total cannot be turned into a daily rate without an announced start date.
- Date: Confirm the event or statement date. The 300 million milestone and the 2026 figures were announced years apart.
- Scope: Check whether the figure covers all editions and platforms. The reporting on the 2026 figures does not say which editions or platforms are included.
- Method: Look for a stated counting method, geographic scope, and window. None was disclosed for the daily first-time-player figure.
- Source type: Distinguish a company statement, a secondary report, and an audited count. The 2026 figures are company statements relayed by GamesRadar+ and Priori Data, not audited numbers.
What the reporting does and does not establish
The 425 million copies sold figure and the 300,000 daily first-time-player figure are attributed to Asha Sharma and Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026. The 300 million milestone is attributed to Mojang and Microsoft in 2023. The reporting does not establish the measurement method for either 2026 figure, the geography they cover, or whether they include every edition and platform. It also does not establish the cause of the daily first-time-player figure. Treat the headline as an accurate report of what was announced, and the explanations above as hypotheses.
