For U.S. students, “affordable” can mean two different things: laptops below $500 for everyday schoolwork, or options below $700 that widen the choice of operating systems and configurations. These five picks suit different needs—not a universal ranking. Prices and specifications vary by listing, so verify the exact configuration and current price before buying.

Which affordable student laptop should you buy?

Start with your course requirements, not the price tag. Writing papers, researching online, and joining video calls are modest workloads; engineering software, specialized coding tools, video editing, and 3D applications can require a specific operating system or more capable hardware. Confirm those requirements with your school or course before choosing.

1. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x: best all-rounder under $500

Tom’s Guide names the IdeaPad Slim 3x its best laptop under $500 for most readers. The reviewed configuration pairs a Snapdragon X processor with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, a useful combination for multitasking in everyday schoolwork. Its 15.3-inch touchscreen has a 1920 × 1200 resolution.

#1 Best Overall
HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Tom’s Guide recorded 16 hours and 29 minutes in its battery comparison. That is an outlet test result, not a guarantee of how long it will last in a student’s classes; brightness, apps, and workload affect real use. The guide also praises performance and keyboard quality, while noting that the display is dim and gaming performance is weaker.

The main compatibility question is the Snapdragon processor’s Arm architecture. Before buying, check that any required Windows applications and peripherals work with this system. Tom’s Guide reported seeing a $449 listing at Walmart when its page was accessed; that observed price is not a live or guaranteed offer. Some retailer listings have different storage, including a 512GB SSD configuration, so compare the specification—not just the product name. See Tom’s Guide’s under-$500 laptop guide.

2. Acer Aspire Go 15: lower-cost Windows choice

The Aspire Go 15 is Tom’s Guide’s budget student pick under $500. Its reviewed Intel configuration has a Core i3-N305 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 screen. At 3.8 pounds, it is a full-size laptop rather than an especially light campus carry.

With 64GB eMMC storage, you have ample space for essential files while Chrome OS seamlessly integrates with Google Drive for cloud storage.

Tom’s Guide says it handled basic school tasks in testing and recorded 10 hours and 15 minutes in its battery comparison. That test result is not a battery-life guarantee. The guide flags limited performance and a poor 720p webcam, so this model is better aligned with basic writing, browsing, and coursework than demanding creative or technical workloads.

The page showed a $299 price when accessed, but that was a time-specific observed listing, not a current price promise. Aspire Go 15 configurations vary, including Intel and AMD options. Check the processor, memory, storage, display, and seller on the exact listing before ordering. Compare the Aspire Go 15 in Tom’s Guide’s guide.

3. Acer Chromebook Plus 515: larger-screen Chromebook

Tom’s Guide calls the Chromebook Plus 515 its best Chromebook under $500. Its listed configuration has an Intel Core i5-1235U processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 IPS display. The publication describes it as a speedy option for everyday productivity and entertainment, with a large screen; it also notes a somewhat cheap-feeling design.

This is a sensible option only if ChromeOS supports your course’s required apps and workflows. Do not assume that a Windows or Mac application has a direct ChromeOS equivalent. Tom’s Guide described the laptop as costing $399 or less during sales; this is a sale-period observation, not a dependable current price. Read Tom’s Guide’s Chromebook Plus 515 coverage.

4. Acer Chromebook Plus 514: compact option for writing and research

TechRadar lists the Chromebook Plus 514 as a budget student option for lighter workloads. Its cited configuration uses an Intel Core 3 100U processor, integrated graphics, 8GB LPDDR5 memory, 128GB UFS storage, and a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 IPS display. That smaller screen may be easier to carry than a 15.6-inch model, while retaining a relatively sharp resolution.

TechRadar says it can suit writing and online research, but advises against demanding work such as video editing and 3D rendering. Its review also notes fan noise under heavier loads. Confirm the exact version and its current listing, and make sure ChromeOS supports your school tools. See TechRadar’s student laptop guide.

5. HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch (2025): big display for general productivity

TechRadar lists this Chromebook with an Intel Core i3-N305, integrated graphics, 8GB LPDDR5, 128GB UFS storage, and a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 display with a 144Hz refresh rate. In its testing, TechRadar reports more than 11 hours of continuous use and praises the build, display, and general productivity performance. That figure is the publication’s test result, not a promise of classroom battery life.

The guide identifies a limited lid-opening angle, a non-convertible design, and a cramped-feeling keyboard as drawbacks. It describes business studies and creative writing as suitable workloads, but says the machine is not for demanding 3D rendering or video editing. As with the other Chromebooks, check that your course apps work on ChromeOS before purchasing. Read TechRadar’s student laptop coverage.

How to choose the right laptop for school

Check software and operating system first

  • Windows: The Aspire Go 15 is the straightforward option here for students whose school software requires Windows. The IdeaPad Slim 3x also runs Windows, but its Snapdragon-based Arm processor makes application compatibility a specific item to verify.
  • ChromeOS: The Chromebook Plus 515, Chromebook Plus 514, and HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch can suit browser-centered coursework, but ChromeOS is not interchangeable with Windows or macOS for every application.
  • Specialized courses: Ask your department or instructor about required applications and hardware before buying, particularly for engineering, creative work, coding, or other specialized fields.

Match memory and storage to your work

Among the five configurations above, the IdeaPad Slim 3x has 16GB RAM and 256GB storage; the others have 8GB RAM, with storage ranging from 128GB to 256GB. That difference matters if you keep many files or run several apps at once. The cited guides do not establish one minimum that fits every student, and they do not establish upgradeability for every configuration. Check whether memory or storage can be upgraded on the specific model before relying on future expansion.

Weigh screen size and carrying comfort

The 14-inch Chromebook Plus 514 is the smallest-screen pick in this group. The other listed displays range from 15.3 to 15.6 inches. A larger screen can make split-screen reading and writing easier, but consider the laptop’s weight and dimensions if you will carry it across campus. The Aspire Go 15’s reviewed configuration weighs 3.8 pounds; comparable weights for the other configurations are not stated in the cited guides.

Compare live listings carefully

Check the full product name and configuration at the seller before you compare prices. Confirm processor, RAM, storage, screen, seller, and availability in the U.S.; a product-family listing may show specifications different from those in a review. The price observations in the Tom’s Guide coverage are time-sensitive and should not be treated as current offers.

What about laptops under $700?

If your budget can stretch beyond $500, RTINGS’ list updated August 28, 2026 names the Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 2026) its best laptop under $700 and the HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025), specifically its 16GB variants, its best Windows laptop under $700. RTINGS says its recommendations account for testing, price, visitor feedback, and availability. These are broader-budget alternatives, not proof that either is the best fit for a particular student. Verify current U.S. pricing, the exact configuration, and course compatibility before considering one.
