Bing can narrow a search by exact wording, required terms, excluded terms, page location, file type, language, region, domain, and even hosting IP address. Most of the useful controls work directly in the search box, so you do not need to open an advanced-search form.

The syntax is strict in a few places: Boolean operators such as OR and NOT must be uppercase, and keyword operators cannot have a space after the colon. Use site:example.com, not site: example.com.

Boolean operators and symbols

Bing normally treats separate search terms as an AND search. For example, Windows backup encryption asks for results related to all three terms, although Bing may still vary the exact wording in its results.

Operator Example What it does
Quotation marks "Windows 11 backup" Searches for the exact words in the quoted phrase.
+ +PowerShell Requires a term and can force inclusion of words Bing would normally ignore.
Parentheses (laptop notebook) Groups terms for inclusion or exclusion.
AND or & VPN AND WireGuard Requires both terms or phrases. Explicit AND is usually unnecessary because Bing applies AND behavior by default.
NOT or - jaguar NOT car Excludes a term or phrase.
OR or | USB-C OR Thunderbolt Matches either alternative.

Use uppercase for OR and NOT. Lowercase or and not are treated as ordinary stop words rather than Boolean operators.

Group alternatives before combining them

OR has the lowest precedence in Bing’s documented order. Parentheses prevent the query from being interpreted more broadly than intended.

"machine learning" (site:mit.edu OR site:stanford.edu)

This searches for the exact phrase on either of the two university domains. Without the parentheses, the OR can apply to more of the query than you intended.

Bing’s documented precedence order is:

  1. Parentheses
  2. Quoted phrases
  3. NOT, -, and +
  4. AND and &
  5. OR and |

How Bing handles punctuation and long queries

Bing generally ignores stop words and punctuation. Quotation marks preserve an exact phrase, while + can force inclusion of a word Bing might otherwise ignore. Do not assume that an unquoted punctuation mark will narrow results.

Bing uses only the first 10 terms in a query to obtain search results. A very long query can therefore lose important conditions after the tenth term. If a search is becoming complicated, split it into two searches or remove descriptive words that are not essential.

Keyword operators for focused searches

Keyword operators use the form keyword:value. The value must immediately follow the colon; a space changes the syntax.

Operator Example Use
site: site:learn.microsoft.com PowerShell Restricts results to a domain, top-level domain, or supported directory.
intitle: intitle:BitLocker Finds the term in page-title metadata.
inbody: inbody:recovery Finds the term in page body text.
inanchor: inanchor:download Finds the term in page anchor text, such as a link label.
filetype: filetype:pdf router manual Returns pages created in the specified file type.
ext: reports ext:docx Returns pages whose filename extension matches the specified extension.
contains: music contains:wma Finds websites containing links to the specified file type.
language: "backup guide" language:en Limits results to a language code.
loc: computer repair loc:US Limits results to a country or region code.
location: computer repair location:GB An alias for loc:.
prefer: football prefer:organization Adds emphasis to a term or another operator; it is not a guaranteed inclusion or exclusion filter.
feed: feed:football Finds RSS or Atom feeds for the searched subject.
hasfeed: site:nytimes.com hasfeed:football Finds pages containing an RSS or Atom feed for the subject.
url: url:microsoft.com Checks whether a domain or web address is in Bing’s index.
ip: ip:207.46.249.252 Finds sites hosted at a specified IPv4 address.

Practical Bing search recipes

Search one site or a small group of sites

Use site: when you already trust a source and want to search its content rather than the entire web.

site:support.microsoft.com Windows 11 activation

Bing also documents grouping several sites with OR:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"heart disease" (site:bbc.co.uk OR site:cnn.com)

The documented form supports a domain, a top-level domain, or a directory no more than two directory levels deep. For example:

site:www.microsoft.com/games/pc halo

Find technical documentation in PDF form

"wireless controller" filetype:pdf setup

filetype:pdf asks for pages created in PDF format. It is different from contains:pdf, which looks for websites containing links to PDF files. To find Word documents, use an extension or file type such as:

project requirements ext:docx

Search page titles and body text separately

These operators are useful when a general search produces pages that merely mention a term in navigation, tags, or unrelated metadata:

intitle:troubleshooting inbody:Bluetooth

Only one term can be specified for each intitle:, inbody:, or inanchor: instance. Repeat the operator for additional terms:

intitle:Windows intitle:backup inbody:encryption

For link labels, try:

inanchor:download inanchor:driver printer

Include one spelling or product name and exclude noise

(Wi-Fi OR WiFi) printer setup -advertisement

You can use NOT instead of the minus sign:

Raspberry Pi NOT recipe

Use quotes when excluding a phrase:

Java tutorial NOT "JavaScript"

Search for regional or language-specific information

Country and language filters use codes, not full names:

"consumer rights" language:en loc:GB

You can group several regions:

sculpture (loc:US OR loc:GB)

The valid code depends on Microsoft’s country, region, and language-code list. Regional behavior and some advanced-search features can vary by country.

Find feeds

Use feed: when you want feeds about a topic rather than ordinary pages:

feed:cybersecurity

Use hasfeed: to find ordinary pages that expose a feed:

site:example.com hasfeed:technology

Less common operators

Find sites by IPv4 address

The ip: operator takes a dotted-quad IPv4 address:

ip:207.46.249.252

Use four decimal components separated by dots. The documented syntax does not specify hostnames, CIDR ranges, or other address formats as valid alternatives.

Check whether a URL is indexed

url:example.com

This checks whether the domain or web address is in Bing’s index. It is an index check, not a guarantee that every page on the site is indexed.

Use preference without treating it as a hard filter

football prefer:organization

prefer: adds emphasis. Unlike site:, filetype:, or NOT, it does not impose a strict boundary, so results may still include pages that do not match the preferred term exactly.

Chaining operators without making the query brittle

Several metadata operators can be combined in one query:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

inanchor:msn inbody:spaces inbody:magog

A more practical technical example is:

site:docs.example.com intitle:API inbody:authentication filetype:pdf

Build complicated queries in stages:

  1. Start with the subject: authentication API.
  2. Restrict the source: site:docs.example.com authentication API.
  3. Add a format: site:docs.example.com authentication API filetype:pdf.
  4. Add title or body conditions only if the result set is still too broad.
  5. If alternatives are needed, group them with parentheses: site:docs.example.com (OAuth OR SAML).

This approach makes failures easier to diagnose. If adding an operator suddenly removes useful results, delete only the last condition and test it separately.

Common mistakes and failure modes

Mistake Incorrect Correct
Space after a keyword colon site: example.com site:example.com
Lowercase Boolean keyword laptop or tablet laptop OR tablet
Assuming punctuation is significant Wi-Fi when the hyphen is essential "Wi-Fi" or an appropriate + term
Putting multiple terms after a metadata operator intitle:wireless router intitle:wireless intitle:router
Writing an oversized query A sentence containing many conditions Keep essential terms within the first 10 query terms and split complex searches
Expecting prefer: to enforce a rule prefer:official as a strict source filter Use site: or another hard restriction when precision matters

Microsoft’s documentation also notes that some advanced-search features may not be available in every country or region. Results can change with Bing’s index, language, location, and ranking systems, so an operator should be treated as a way to narrow the search—not as a promise that every matching page will appear.

A compact workflow for everyday research

  1. Put an exact product name, error message, or quoted sentence in quotation marks.
  2. Add the most important technical term. Do not write AND between every word unless it improves readability.
  3. Use site: for vendor documentation, a government site, a university, or another trusted source.
  4. Use NOT or - to remove a common but irrelevant meaning.
  5. Use filetype: or ext: when the document format matters.
  6. Use parentheses around alternatives joined by OR.
  7. Remove unnecessary words if the query approaches 10 terms.

For example, troubleshooting a printer driver could progress from:

printer driver not installing

to:

"printer driver" installation site:support.example.com

and then, if a manual is needed:

site:support.example.com "printer driver" filetype:pdf

FAQ

Does Bing require AND between every search term?

No. Bing uses AND behavior by default, so separate terms are normally treated as required terms. Explicit AND or & is available but usually unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Bing ignore lowercase “or” or “not”?

Microsoft documents OR and NOT as uppercase Boolean operators. Lowercase forms are treated as stop words, so use uppercase.

What is the difference between filetype:, ext:, and contains:?

filetype: returns pages created in a specified file type. ext: matches the filename extension. contains: finds websites containing links to the specified file type.

Can I put several words after intitle: or inbody:?

Use one term per operator instance. For multiple terms, repeat the operator, such as intitle:Windows intitle:backup.

Why did my long Bing query ignore part of my request?

Bing uses only the first 10 terms in a query to obtain search results. Shorten the query or run it as two separate searches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a hostname with ip:?

The documented ip: syntax requires an IPv4 dotted-quad address, such as ip:207.46.249.252. Microsoft does not document hostnames or CIDR notation for this operator.

The Bottom Line

The most dependable Bing controls are "exact phrases", +, NOT/-, grouped OR alternatives, and source or format restrictions such as site: and filetype:. Keep Boolean words uppercase, leave no space after an operator colon, repeat metadata operators for additional terms, and avoid queries longer than 10 terms. For the complete current syntax, see Microsoft’s Boolean and symbol operator documentation and advanced keyword reference.
