Adrian Cockcroft joined Amazon Web Services in October 2016 as vice president of cloud architecture, after helping Netflix scale and migrate to AWS. Netflix’s move was a company-wide, multi-year transformation—not the work of one architect—and Netflix says it completed the migration in January 2016.

Who is Adrian Cockcroft?

Cockcroft is a technology executive and author who joined Netflix in 2007. AWS’s biography describes him as a Netflix cloud architect who helped teams scale and migrate to AWS. Data Center Knowledge characterized him as a key architect of Netflix’s move from its own data centers to AWS, and associated his work with Netflix’s cloud-native architecture and NetflixOSS.

On October 25, 2016, Data Center Knowledge reported that Cockcroft had joined Amazon as vice president of cloud architecture, where he would advise AWS customers on cloud architecture. That is the appointment described by the headline; it is a 2016 story, not a new hiring announcement.

What did Cockcroft do in Netflix’s move to AWS?

AWS says Cockcroft helped Netflix teams scale and migrate to its cloud. That supports describing him as an important technical leader in the work, but not as its sole architect or decision-maker. Netflix’s own account describes a broad effort involving engineering and platform leaders, teams across the company, and changes to how Netflix built and operated software.

Netflix’s retrospective, published February 12, 2016, says its cloud journey began in August 2008, after a major database corruption left it unable to ship DVDs for three days. The company says it chose AWS for its scale and the breadth of its services and features. Most systems, including customer-facing services, were in the cloud before 2015; Netflix says it completed the migration in early January 2016 by moving the remaining streaming-service data-center components and shutting them down.

Netflix described the transition as a fundamental technology and operating-model change rather than a simple transfer of unchanged systems. It says it rebuilt virtually all its technology, moving from a monolithic application to hundreds of microservices, denormalizing its data model, and adopting NoSQL databases. Continuous delivery and more independent decisions by engineering teams replaced centralized release coordination and slower hardware-provisioning processes.

Why Netflix’s migration was more than a data-center move

Netflix’s account distinguishes a cloud-native redesign from a “forklift” move that transfers existing systems without changing their design. A direct transfer can preserve old limitations; redesigning systems and operations takes longer but can make better use of cloud capacity and services. Netflix chose the longer transformation. Its retrospective says the effort took seven years of diligent work.

Netflix also described the scale of the business change behind the migration: by 2016 it had eight times as many streaming members as in 2008, while overall viewing had grown by three orders of magnitude over those eight years. The company said AWS let it use thousands of virtual servers and petabytes of storage within minutes. These are Netflix’s own historical descriptions, not independent measurements.

In its 2016 retrospective, Netflix’s cloud and engineering leaders wrote: “It took time and effort to transform Netflix into a cloud-native company, but it put us in a much better position to continue to grow and become a global TV network.” The statement reflects the company’s explanation of why it undertook a redesign alongside the migration; it is not a quotation from Cockcroft.

What happened to Cockcroft after the 2016 AWS appointment?

Amazon later announced Cockcroft as vice president of sustainability architecture. That establishes a later title, but the sources available here do not establish his current role in 2026. AWS’s author biography also identifies him as the author of four books, including Sun Performance and Tuning, published by Prentice Hall in 1998.
