Adobe’s December 18, 2025 partnership with Runway brings Runway’s Gen-4.5 video model into Adobe Firefly and makes Adobe Runway’s preferred API creativity partner. Firefly customers were promised early access to new Runway models, while the companies said they would develop professional video capabilities intended to be exclusive to Adobe apps. The deal does not guarantee permanent access to every Runway model or feature: Adobe’s live documentation says availability varies by country or region, and individual models can be retired.
What Adobe and Runway actually announced
On December 18, 2025, Adobe announced a multi-year strategic partnership with Runway. Adobe was named Runway’s preferred API creativity partner, and Adobe said Firefly customers would be first to access new Runway models after their release through Adobe’s creative workflows. The announcement did not describe a broader technical API architecture or provide a delivery timetable for future capabilities.
The initial named model was Runway Gen-4.5. Adobe said Gen-4.5 was available in Firefly and on Runway’s own platform at launch.
The companies also said they would collaborate on specialized AI capabilities for professional video workflows, intended to be exclusive to Adobe applications and starting with Firefly. “Exclusive” describes the intended Adobe-app positioning in the announcement; it is not a promise that every future feature has already shipped.

How the companies described the deal
Adobe chief technology officer Ely Greenfield said: “Runway’s generative video innovation combined with Adobe’s trusted pro workflows will help creators and brands expand their creative potential and meet the growing demands of modern content and media production.” Runway co-founder and CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela said: “This partnership puts our latest generative video technology in front of more storytellers, inside Adobe’s creative tools that are already the industry standard for many creators around the world.” These are executive descriptions of the partnership, not independent measurements of output quality or productivity.
Can you use Runway Gen-4.5 in Adobe Firefly?
Adobe’s partner-model documentation, checked September 27, 2026, lists Runway Gen-4.5 as a partner model in Firefly. Adobe warns that partner-model availability can vary by country or region, so the live model picker on your account is the practical test of access.

- Generate Video for creating clips from prompts.
- Image to Video for animating a supplied still image.
- Firefly Boards for visual development and iteration.
The exact controls and model choices can change. Open the current Firefly interface and confirm that Runway Gen-4.5 appears before planning a production workflow.

Is Runway Aleph still available in Firefly?
Adobe’s model-retirement page lists Runway Aleph as deprecated on July 23, 2026. That status means you should not treat Aleph as guaranteed Firefly access under the partnership. Check the current Firefly model picker and Adobe’s retirement notices for any later change.

The retirement listing is an important distinction: the partnership is not blanket access to all Runway models, and a model named in an earlier announcement may later be removed or replaced. Adobe’s retirement information is at Adobe’s model-deprecation page.

Both services can expose Runway technology, but they serve different workflow preferences. The cited Adobe materials establish integration and partner status, not a comparative test of image quality, motion consistency, speed, or reliability.

Choose Firefly when keeping generation inside an Adobe-centered workflow matters. Choose Runway’s platform when direct Runway access and its native interface are more important. Recheck the plan, credit, export, and licensing terms for the exact model and region you will use.

Adobe said Firefly Pro customers received unlimited generations through December 22, 2025. That was a time-limited launch offer and is not current evidence of unlimited generation, current pricing, or ongoing access. Adobe’s announcement does not establish today’s Firefly plan terms, credit allowances, or the cost of using Runway models.
Before subscribing or budgeting, review the current Firefly plan page and the terms shown in your account. Treat partner-model usage rules separately from claims about Adobe’s own Firefly models, and verify the commercial-use terms attached to the selected model.

- A multi-year strategic relationship with Runway.
- Preferred API creativity-partner status for Adobe.
- Early access for Firefly customers to new Runway models after release.
- Work on specialized professional video capabilities intended to be exclusive to Adobe apps, beginning with Firefly.
What remains time-sensitive
- Whether Runway Gen-4.5 is enabled for your country or region.
- Which Runway models appear in the current Firefly picker.
- Whether a model has been deprecated, as happened to Runway Aleph on July 23, 2026.
- Current plans, credits, generation limits, export rules, and model-specific licensing terms.
Bottom line for Firefly users
Runway Gen-4.5 is the concrete result of the partnership that Adobe currently documents in Firefly. The strategic deal also promises earlier access to future Runway models and Adobe-focused professional video capabilities, but it does not make every Runway model permanently available. Confirm regional access and the live model picker, and check current plan and licensing terms before committing a production workflow.
