Adobe forecasts that traffic referred from AI tools to U.S. retail websites will increase 130% year over year during the 2026 holiday season, Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The figure measures shoppers clicking through to retailers—not a 130% rise in holiday sales.
What does “AI-driven retail traffic” mean?
Adobe is counting visits to retail sites that begin when a shopper clicks a link from an AI tool. It is a referral-traffic measure: it does not count every use of AI during product research, nor does it show what share of purchases AI influenced. Adobe’s March 2025 explanation likewise defined generative-AI traffic as shoppers clicking a link to a retailer (Adobe’s measurement explanation).
In practice, a shopper might ask an AI assistant to find a product or compare options, then click a retailer link in its response. That click can register as AI-referred traffic. The forecast does not establish whether that visitor completes a purchase.
Is Adobe saying holiday sales will increase 130%?
No. The 130% figure is Adobe’s forecast for AI-referred visits to U.S. retail sites during Nov. 1–Dec. 31, 2026. It is not a forecast for sales, orders, conversion rates, or AI’s share of purchases. Adobe separately projects $275.1 billion in U.S. online sales over the same period, up 6.7% year over year; that is a different measure (Adobe’s 2026 holiday forecast).

What are Adobe’s forecasts for key shopping days?
Adobe expects AI-referred traffic growth to be particularly pronounced on the named holiday shopping days:

How does the forecast compare with recent and past results?
Adobe says AI-driven traffic to retail sites was already up 127% year over year in August 2026. That is a reported August comparison, not evidence that the same rate will persist through November and December (Adobe’s holiday shopping trends and forecast page).

For the 2025 holiday season, Adobe reported that traffic to retail sites from generative AI tools increased 693.4% year over year. That is a reported result for the prior season, while 130% is a forecast for the 2026 season; the two figures describe different years and should not be treated as like-for-like predictions. Adobe analyst Vivek Pandya described the 2025 season as one in which consumers embraced generative AI as a shopping assistant, an interpretation attributed to Adobe rather than an independent finding (Adobe’s 2025 holiday recap).

Earlier Adobe analysis also reported large year-over-year increases in generative-AI referrals for different periods, including Nov. 1–Dec. 31, 2024 and February 2025 versus July 2024. Those historical comparisons use different windows and do not replace the 2026 forecast (Adobe’s March 2025 analysis).

Adobe says its forecast draws on Adobe Analytics data covering more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, 100 million product SKUs, and 18 product categories. The company describes its analysis as based on direct online transactions (Adobe’s forecast announcement).

Those are Adobe’s descriptions of its data and method. The cited forecast materials do not provide an independent audit of the 130% projection or an error range, so the number is best understood as Adobe’s company forecast—not a guaranteed outcome.

What the forecast can—and cannot—tell shoppers
- It signals a projected change in one traffic source. Adobe expects more shoppers to reach retailer sites by clicking through from AI tools.
- It does not establish that AI causes higher spending. Referral growth alone does not show whether AI visits convert to orders or account for broader holiday sales growth.
- It does not describe all AI shopping activity. Shoppers may use AI to research products without clicking through to a retailer, which this referral metric does not capture.
