To regain administrator access, first identify whether you forgot a password, are signed in to a standard account, or are using a computer managed by someone else. A password reset restores the ability to sign in; it does not automatically make an account an administrator. On a Windows PC or Mac you own or are authorized to administer, use the recovery path for that specific problem. For a work or school device, contact its IT administrator instead of trying to change its controls.

How do I get administrator access back?

Check these three situations before changing anything:

  • You cannot sign in: You may need to reset the account password. This does not by itself change the account type.
  • You can sign in but lack admin rights: Your account may be a standard user. On Windows, another authorized administrator can change its type. On a Mac, another administrator can change the login password, but the available steps to change account privileges depend on the Mac’s setup; use an authorized administrator or contact the person who set it up.
  • The device is managed or belongs to someone else: Ask the employer, school, family organizer, or person who set up the computer for help. Management rules may restrict account changes.

On Windows, the account-type setting is under Settings > Accounts > Other users. The labels can vary by Windows release. For work or school account connections, see Microsoft’s Windows account-management guidance.

I forgot my administrator password

Windows: local account

At the Windows sign-in screen, select the password reset option and answer the security questions configured for the local account. If you created a password reset disk before losing access, you can use it instead. A reset disk is a preventive aid for a local account, not a way to change account permissions; it does not apply to a Microsoft account.

If you can sign in to a separate administrator account on the PC, Microsoft also documents changing a local user’s password through Computer Management. If no administrator account is available to change the password, Microsoft says the device needs to be reset. Follow Microsoft’s local-account password recovery instructions. Resetting the password and restoring administrator membership are different tasks.

Mac: use another administrator, the login window, or Recovery

If you can sign in to another administrator account, use Users & Groups to change the affected user’s login password. Otherwise, at the login window, enter the password up to three times where applicable and look for a password-reset message. If that route is unavailable, Apple describes resetting the password in macOS Recovery. Depending on the Mac’s configuration, you may be asked for the Apple Account previously used with it or its FileVault recovery key.

Apple’s current instructions say that on macOS Tahoe 26 or later, a FileVault recovery key might be available in the Passwords app on another device signed in to the same Apple Account, provided iCloud Passwords & Keychain is enabled. Recovery screens and options depend on the installed macOS version and configuration; follow Apple’s current Mac login-password reset instructions.

How do I make my Windows account an administrator?

This changes account type; it is not a password-reset procedure. You must be able to sign in to another authorized administrator account to approve the change.

Exact labels may differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. Microsoft warns: “you should limit the number of administrators on your Windows device because administrators have complete control over the system.” See Microsoft’s account-management guidance.

I can’t install software because I don’t have admin rights

That message usually means the current account is a standard user or that an organization’s policy blocks installation. If it is your own Windows PC, ask an existing administrator to change your account type using the steps above or to approve the installation. If it is a Mac, use an authorized administrator account or ask the person who set it up to help. Do not try to bypass a work, school, or other owner’s restrictions.

Administrator rights allow changes such as installing software and adjusting system settings. Use an administrator account only when needed, then return to a standard account for routine work. Apple also says only administrator users can use sudo in Terminal, advises against routine root login, and warns that root-level changes can make a Mac stop working. Do not enable root to solve an ordinary sign-in or permissions problem; see Apple’s Terminal guidance on sudo.

Back up before using Windows or Mac recovery

Recovery can affect files, apps, or settings. Back up important data where possible and review what the selected option removes before proceeding. Microsoft recommends starting with the least disruptive applicable recovery option; some Windows recovery choices can cause data loss. BitLocker may require its recovery key for many Windows Recovery Environment options. Read Microsoft’s Windows recovery-options guidance before choosing an option; do not assume that Reset this PC preserves everything.

On a Mac, erasing the computer is a last resort: Apple says it permanently removes user accounts and their data. Check backups and make sure you can access the Apple Account or FileVault recovery key that may be requested. After erasure, you may need to reinstall macOS and activate the Mac. Follow Apple’s password-recovery guidance and confirm the consequences before choosing erase.

Prepare a Windows password reset disk in advance

A password reset disk can help with a forgotten password for a Windows local account only if it was created beforehand. Microsoft specifies a USB flash drive; the disk is not a general administrator-permissions repair and does not apply to Microsoft accounts. See Microsoft’s instructions for creating a local-account reset disk.

When the device is managed by an organization or another person

If a work or school account, device-management profile, or another person’s ownership is involved, contact the organization’s IT administrator or the person who set up the computer. Microsoft documents work and school account connections, while Apple advises users who do not know a Mac administrator’s name and password to ask the person who set up the Mac. The appropriate process depends on the organization and its policies; do not attempt to defeat those controls.
