You can reach an admin panel without typing a password only through a sign-in method the service supports—such as an enrolled passwordless credential—or its official account-recovery process. That does not mean bypassing identity checks: authentication verifies who you are, while authorization determines what your verified account may access. If you administer a workplace or hosted service, contact its authorized administrator or identity team when recovery is unclear.

Authentication and authorization answer different questions

Authentication verifies the identity of the person or system making a request. Authorization decides whether that verified identity may access a particular resource or perform a specific action. OWASP describes access control, also known as authorization, as mediating access to resources based on identity and policy in its Access Control overview.

OWASP puts the distinction plainly: “Authorization (verifying access to specific features or resources) is not equivalent to authentication (verifying identity).” See C1: Implement Access Control.

For an admin panel, that means a successful sign-in is not proof that the account has administrator rights. The account may authenticate but have no admin role, or may be allowed to use only some features. An administrator account, in turn, must still authenticate through an accepted method. Access checks should apply to the relevant application, API, and backend paths—not just determine whether an admin page or button is visible.

What “without the password” can legitimately mean

It can mean using an enrolled, supported passwordless credential or another previously configured sign-in factor. It can also mean recovering access through the service’s official process after forgetting a password. In both cases, the service must still verify the claimant’s identity, and its authorization rules still determine the account’s permissions.

A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key may be an option if the service supports it and the account was set up to use it. OWASP’s Authentication Patterns Cheat Sheet describes a signed WebAuthn assertion as an authentication credential. The key helps authenticate the account; it does not grant an administrator role.

Choose the supported route for your situation

Situation Legitimate next step What it does not do
You forgot the password to your own account Use the service’s official password reset or recovery flow. It does not grant access to an account you do not own or administer.
You enrolled a passwordless credential or alternative factor Use it through the service’s normal sign-in page, if the service supports that method. It does not skip identity checks or change account permissions.
You cannot complete MFA Follow the service’s official MFA-recovery procedure. It should not be treated as permission to evade MFA.
The panel belongs to an organization or hosted service Contact the authorized administrator or identity team and follow its identity-verification process. There is no single recovery procedure that applies to every organization or service.
You suspect someone else accessed the account Recover the account, then review its recovery and MFA settings and secure active access. A password reset by itself may not remove every sign of compromise.

Recover a forgotten password safely

  1. Open the service’s official sign-in page. Use its password-reset or account-recovery option rather than an unverified link or an unofficial workaround.
  2. Complete the identity checks the service requests. Recovery is another way to authenticate, not a way to bypass authentication. If it is a managed work account, ask the organization’s administrator or identity team for its approved process.
  3. Set a new password and secure the recovery account. Check that the email address, phone number, or other recovery channel on file is still controlled by you.
  4. Sign in and confirm your permissions. If you can authenticate but cannot use an administrative feature, ask the service owner to check your assigned role or policy. Do not assume a password problem is the cause.

OWASP’s Forgot Password Cheat Sheet recommends consistent responses to recovery requests for existing and nonexistent accounts, consistent handling time, and protections such as rate limits against excessive automated submissions. These measures help prevent recovery flows from leaking account information or being abused.

If MFA is unavailable, use its recovery process

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires evidence from at least two distinct factor types. A password and a PIN are both knowledge factors, so using both does not constitute MFA. OWASP lists passwords as a knowledge factor and OTP tokens, certificates, smart cards, and hardware tokens as examples of possession factors. It recommends MFA for administrative and other high-privilege users. See the Multifactor Authentication Cheat Sheet.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts

  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more

If you lost access to an authenticator, use the service’s official MFA-recovery route or ask your organization’s identity team. Recovery should restore the legitimate user’s access without making it easy for an attacker to take over the account; security questions are not a sound substitute for strong authentication.

Respond to suspected account compromise

If you think someone else has accessed the account, treat recovery as account remediation rather than just a password change. A reset may leave an attacker’s active session or altered recovery settings in place. After verifying the account owner, review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and enrolled MFA methods; revoke compromised authenticators; and invalidate active sessions and outstanding reset or recovery tokens. Notify the service or organization through a safe, registered channel. OWASP covers these recovery protections in its Forgot Password Cheat Sheet.

Why a successful sign-in may still not open the admin panel

  • The account lacks the required role. Authentication succeeded, but the account is not authorized for the requested administrative feature.
  • Access is limited by policy. The account may have permission for some resources or actions but not others.
  • The service expects a different supported sign-in method. A passwordless key or alternate factor works only when the service supports it and the account is enrolled.
  • The relevant action has its own authorization check. Permission for an account or screen does not automatically authorize every operation. OWASP’s Transaction Authorization Cheat Sheet discusses authorization for specific transactions.

Ask the service owner or organizational administrator to check the account’s assigned role and the policy for the blocked resource or action. Do not try to change roles through an unapproved route or exploit a panel’s configuration.
