Google says its new Gemini Skills are available across all Google AI subscription tiers, and eligible personal-account users can use them without a paid-tier requirement announced. Skills are reusable instruction sets for recurring tasks, but Google has not promised unlimited usage or identical access for every account and feature.
Are Gemini Skills free?
Google’s September 30, 2026 Gemini Skills announcement says the feature is rolling out globally in Gemini chat and is “available to all Google AI subscription tiers.” Google’s Gemini Apps Help page says Skills are available to individuals over 18 who are signed in to a personal Google Account. Taken together, those statements mean Google has not announced a paid-subscription requirement for those users.
That is not the same as a promise of unlimited free use. The announcement does not publish a Skills usage limit or guarantee that every account, age group, feature, or region has the same access. Google says users under 18 are expected to get access later, and the Help page says work and school account availability is planned to expand.
What Gemini Skills do
A Skill is a saved set of instructions for a task you repeat, such as applying a preferred writing style or following brand rules. You can call one in chat by typing a slash and its name. Gemini can also create Skills from conversations and apply one when it recognizes that a prompt fits. You can combine Skills in a chat, so separate instruction sets can work together.
#1 Best Overall
Google says Skills can include plain-text documents, PDFs, and images as reference material. The Help page also says you can create Skills by uploading a SKILL.md file, the open Markdown format used by some other platforms. Upload-based Skill creation is currently available in the Gemini Mac app and web app.
How Skills differ from Gems
Gems are custom versions of Gemini set up for particular roles or topics. Skills instead package reusable instructions that can be invoked or applied within a chat. Google’s stated distinction and transition details are summarized below; feature availability can change as the rollout continues.
Rank #2
| Area | Gems | Skills |
|---|---|---|
| How you use them | A separately configured Gem. | Invoke by typing a slash and the Skill’s name, or let Gemini apply a relevant Skill in chat. |
| Combining instructions | Not stated in the cited Google Help materials. | Multiple Skills can be combined in one chat. |
| Reference files | Uploaded knowledge files are preserved when a Gem migrates, according to Workspace Help. | Can use text documents, PDFs, and images; SKILL.md uploads can be used to create Skills. |
| Workspace apps | Gems cannot be used in Workspace apps. | Workspace Help says Skills can be used across the Gemini app and Workspace apps, but the two surfaces do not currently sync. |
| Feature support | Google lists some capabilities Gems supported that Skills do not yet support. | Canvas, Deep Research, video creation, music creation, and guided learning are listed as not yet working with Skills. |
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page says you can create as many Skills as you want, but only 100 can be active at once. Sharing and connections to Drive and NotebookLM files were described in the September 30 announcement as additions coming in the following weeks, not as features already available at launch.
Are Gemini Gems going away?
Yes, Google is transitioning Gems to Skills, but the timing depends on account type. Google’s consumer Help page gives November 2026 as the start of the transition for personal accounts. For Workspace, Google says Gems will be removed no sooner than the dates below.
Rank #3
| Account or service | Transition or removal timing | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google Accounts | Starting November 2026, according to Gemini Apps Help. | Remaining Gems in the Gemini app will be converted automatically. |
| Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts | No sooner than March 1, 2027, according to Workspace Help. | Skills begin rolling out to Workspace on October 5, 2026 for Rapid Release domains and October 19, 2026 for Scheduled Release domains. |
| Workspace education accounts | No sooner than June 1, 2027, according to Workspace Help. | Gems remain until the later removal date. |
| Workspace Studio | New flows can no longer add an “Ask a Gem” step; existing flows continue to work until 2027. | Google’s Workspace Help page does not give a more specific end date for existing flows. |
Will my Gems automatically become Skills?
For personal accounts, Google says Gems remaining in the Gemini app will be converted automatically. Workspace Help describes a different review step for Workspace migrations: converted Gems become inactive draft Skills, and their creators must review and activate them before use or sharing.
For Workspace conversions, Google says names, descriptions, instructions, uploaded knowledge files, and Drive permissions and sharing settings are preserved. Skills in the Gemini app and Workspace apps do not currently sync, so anyone who needs the same Skill in both places must recreate it on each surface.

What the earlier free Gems rollout tells us—and what it doesn’t
In a March 13, 2025 announcement, Google said custom Gems were beginning to roll out to everyone at no cost in the Gemini app. That historical rollout was limited by language availability and to users aged 18 or older. It provides context for the earlier feature, but it does not establish unlimited free usage for Skills; Google’s current tier-wide availability statement is the relevant pricing detail for Skills.

What to check before relying on a Skill
- Confirm you are signed in to an eligible account. The current personal-account rule is for people over 18 using a personal Google Account.
- Check that the task does not depend on an unsupported feature such as Canvas or Deep Research.
- If you use both Gemini and Workspace apps, plan to create the Skill separately in each until synchronization is supported.
- If a Gem is central to your workflow, check the transition timing for your account type and, for Workspace, review and activate its draft Skill when it appears.
