Neither the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5 nor the Nike Alphafly 3 is a universal winner. The choice comes down to how each shoe fits, feels at your intended marathon pace, and matches your preference for its geometry and propulsion design. Try both before race day: the available specifications and reviews do not establish which is faster or more comfortable for you.

How the shoes are built
Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5
Adidas describes the Adios Pro 5 as combining LIGHTSTRIKE PRO foam with a carbon-infused ENERGYRIM. The brand says the design delivers a 9% improvement in energy return over its predecessor. That is adidas’s product-development claim, not an independently established result for every runner or a promise of a particular race time. See the adidas announcement and the US product listing.

Nike’s design description pairs a connected ZoomX foam midsole with two forefoot Air Zoom units and a full-length carbon-fibre Flyplate. Nike lists the shoe for road racing from half-marathon through marathon distance. Those construction details explain the design, but do not prove that it will make an individual runner faster. Check the Nike Sweden product page for its specifications and local listing.

Fit and geometry should drive the decision
The published heel-to-toe drops differ: T3 reports 4 mm for the Adios Pro 5, while Nike lists 8 mm for the Alphafly 3. If you have a strong preference for a particular drop or are accustomed to a certain feel, treat that difference as a reason to try both—not as evidence that one is inherently better for your body. Published specifications cannot predict your comfort, mechanics or injury risk.
During a fitting, pay attention to heel hold, toe room, arch feel and whether the shoe remains comfortable as you approach marathon effort. If possible, run in each at your intended race pace and with the socks and orthotics, if any, that you plan to use. A short try-on may not reveal how the shoe feels over a long run.

What reviews and testimonials can—and cannot—tell you
A Tom’s Guide reviewer reports having raced in the Alphafly over multiple distances and accumulated more than 80 miles in it, describing it as comfortable over long distances. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison with the Adios Pro 5 or a guarantee that the fit will work for you. The Tom’s Guide carbon-plate shoe roundup provides that review context.
Nike’s product page also hosts a testimonial from Moe Murunga, identified as a marathoner and Mill City runner: “They’re very bouncy and very comfortable—perfect for the marathon”. It is a Nike-hosted testimonial, not independent comparative evidence.

How to choose between the Adios Pro 5 and Alphafly 3
- Try both for fit. Check heel security, toe room and arch comfort rather than assuming that brand specifications predict how either shoe will fit.
- Compare the ride at marathon pace. If possible, test both shoes on a run that includes your intended race effort. Notice which construction and feel you prefer without treating bounce or plate stiffness as a guarantee of speed.
- Use the drop difference as a preference check. The published figures are 4 mm for the Adios Pro 5 and 8 mm for the Alphafly 3; choose based on what feels suitable for your established preference, not on an unsupported promise of a biomechanical benefit.
- Check your local listing before buying. Prices, promotions, colorways and size availability vary by country and can change. The cited adidas price is from its US listing; the cited Nike listing is from Sweden.
- Do not debut either shoe on race day. Give yourself time to assess fit and comfort in training before committing to a marathon.
A runner asking “Alphafly 3 or Adios Pro 5 for a half marathon and marathon?” is asking the right kind of question: both are positioned for road racing, but the best answer depends on personal fit and preference. One Reddit discussion uses that phrasing, but a single post does not show how common the question is.
