Adafruit’s Teddy Ruxpin hack changed the bear’s eye imagery—not its voice. In a May 2023 demonstration, the maker group replaced the eye bitmap frames inside a story file with its logo, using Python and Pillow to edit the 2017 digital toy’s SNXROM file. The result is a familiar animatronic bear with an unmistakably eerie glow.
What Adafruit changed
The demonstration focused on the 2017 digital Teddy Ruxpin, not the earlier cassette-operated toy. Adafruit described parsing the bear’s SNXROM file and replacing the eye bitmap frames in a story file. It put the Adafruit logo in place of the original eye imagery; the post says any drawing in 128×128 RGB format could be used.
That is a targeted visual modification: the eye images are part of the story-file content, and the demonstration changed those frames. Adafruit’s post described examining the toy’s audio32 format as a next step, so it does not establish that custom audio encoding was completed as part of this eye edit. Adafruit’s Teddy Ruxpin hacking post documents the original demonstration.
Why the 2017 version matters
The 2017 relaunch uses a digital system, with a microcontroller connected to a speaker, motors and display panels behind the eyes, rather than the cassette-based system of earlier Teddy Ruxpin toys. That platform distinction matters: this particular file-based eye hack is about the digital bear.

Adafruit’s work also sits within a longer reverse-engineering effort. Hackster’s account connects the project to earlier Teddy Ruxpin reverse engineering presented by Zenofex of the Exploiteers at DEF CON 26. Hackster provides useful context, while Adafruit’s own post is the first-party account of the eye-frame edit. Hackster’s report describes the 2017 hardware and that lineage.
How the eye-image change differs from a rebuild
Adafruit later published a broader Teddy Ruxpin Rebuild guide. It covers uploading custom voice files and eye graphics, working with story files, and transferring the mechanism into a similarly shaped plush. That is a wider personalization project, not evidence that the original logo-eye demonstration also modified the audio.

| Project scope | What it covers | What the cited material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Eye-image demonstration | Replace bitmap frames in a story file | Adafruit showed its logo in the eye frames and described 128×128 RGB artwork. |
| Audio and story-file personalization | Custom voice files and eye graphics | The later rebuild guide describes these workflows; the original eye-edit post framed audio-format investigation as future work. |
| Plush-body conversion | Move the mechanism into a similar plush | The later rebuild guide includes this as part of a broader rebuild. |
Parts for the broader rebuild
The rebuild guide lists a 2017 Teddy Ruxpin, a similarly shaped 10-inch plush, a USB micro cable, scissors, a thread ripper, needle and thread, and accessories to cover sewing scars. Its introduction points to secondhand sourcing for the bear; current availability and prices are not established here. These sewing supplies and the replacement plush belong to the body-conversion project, not the eye-bitmap-only change. The guide lists a USB micro cable, but that item alone does not perform the image edit.
The original demonstration’s practical idea is narrower: change the artwork stored in the digital bear’s story file. The later rebuild guide is the relevant reference if the goal also includes custom audio or a different plush body.
