If an ad blocker is not working in Chrome, first identify whether you mean Chrome’s built-in control for intrusive ads or a separately installed extension. Then check the extension’s status and site access, compare the affected site with another site and with Incognito, review site permissions and cookie behavior, and update Chrome. Unwanted redirects or pop-ups call for a separate unwanted-software check.
First, identify which ad blocker you mean
Chrome’s built-in intrusive-ad control and an ad-blocking extension are separate features, with separate settings. Chrome’s control applies to sites it classifies as providing poor ad experiences, such as through excessive, flashing, or autoplaying ads, or ad walls; it is not a promise to remove every ad. See Google’s explanation of Chrome’s intrusive-ad settings.
If you installed an extension, troubleshoot it in Chrome’s Extensions manager. If you are unsure, open chrome://extensions: an entry for the blocker indicates that it is an extension. If you meant Chrome’s own control, go to chrome://settings/content/ads and review the setting for the affected site. Labels and menu paths may change between Chrome versions.
Check whether the extension is enabled and allowed on the site
- Open the extension manager: enter
chrome://extensionsin Chrome’s address bar. - Check the blocker’s switch: if it is off, turn it on, then reload the affected page.
- Check site access: open the extension’s details and review its site-access setting. Make sure it is allowed to run on the page where ads appear.
- Repair it if Chrome offers that option: an extension marked corrupted may have a Repair action on its details page.
Chrome may turn off an extension that did not come from the Chrome Web Store or that it determined was unsafe. Google Chrome Web Store Help explains: “The extensions that Chrome turned off either didn’t come from the Chrome Web Store or were determined unsafe.” If the extension is missing, grayed out, or repeatedly disabled, check whether Chrome has turned it off and consult the extension developer before trying to reinstall it.

Find out whether the problem is limited to one site or one browsing mode
Use the same page for each comparison, and change one thing at a time. This helps distinguish an extension problem from a site-specific setting or a difference between regular and Incognito browsing.
- Compare sites: see whether the blocker works on another site. If it does, focus on the affected site’s permissions and the extension’s access to that site.
- Compare browsing modes: if the issue occurs only in Incognito, open
chrome://extensions, select the blocker’s details, and check whether Allow in Incognito is enabled. Extensions do not automatically run in Incognito unless allowed. - Compare extension states: temporarily turn the blocker off and reload the page, then turn it back on and reload again. Note whether the site’s behavior changes; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a fix that should be left disabled.
Review site permissions and cookie behavior
For a problem on one site, open it and select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar. Review the permissions shown there and reset or adjust only settings relevant to the site. Chrome’s site settings guidance explains how to manage permissions.
Third-party cookies can affect how some sites work. Google notes that some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked, and Chrome blocks them by default in Incognito mode. If the page behaves differently in Incognito, check its cookie behavior before treating that difference as proof the blocker is broken. Chrome provides site exceptions; use one only as a targeted test for the affected site, not as a general ad-blocking fix. See Google’s guidance on cookies and site data.

Update Chrome and check for device policies
In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose Help > About Google Chrome. Install an available update and restart the browser, then check the site again. Google recommends checking that Chrome is current when troubleshooting extension installation or compatibility; see Update Google Chrome.

If this is a work or school device, an administrator may restrict which extensions can be installed or used. If Chrome says an extension is blocked or managed, contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy. Google’s Chrome Web Store extension help covers extension availability and management.
Check for conflicts without removing trusted extensions permanently
If several extensions are enabled, or Chrome has become slow, temporarily disable unrelated extensions at chrome://extensions and reload the affected page. If the behavior changes, re-enable trusted extensions one at a time to isolate a possible conflict. Google recommends turning off or removing extensions that are not in use to improve Chrome performance; see Manage extensions in Chrome.

When ads may be a sign of unwanted software
Ordinary ads that get through a blocker are different from persistent pop-ups, unfamiliar redirects, unexpected new tabs, or extensions that return after removal. Those symptoms can indicate unwanted software rather than a filter or permission issue. Follow Chrome’s guidance for removing unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware. Do not download a utility offered by a suspicious warning or an unsolicited “virus detected” pop-up; use only official, trusted download sources.
If the blocker still does not work
After checking its status, site access, browsing mode, site permissions, and Chrome version, consult the extension developer’s support channel for blocker-specific help. For Chrome settings or browser problems, use Chrome Help. The checks above can narrow down the cause, but no setting guarantees that every ad will be blocked.
