On August 6, 2012, Bitdefender and Acunetix announced an integration for WebsiteDefender, an online service that combined website malware scanning, vulnerability monitoring and automated daily backups. WebsiteDefender users could have their sites scanned with Bitdefender malware-detection technology. That announcement describes a historical partnership; the available evidence does not establish that WebsiteDefender or the Bitdefender integration is still offered.
What the 2012 partnership provided
The reported arrangement connected Bitdefender’s malware-detection technology to Acunetix’s WebsiteDefender service. The intended customer was a website operator, not a desktop-antivirus user: WebsiteDefender scanned a site for malware, monitored web vulnerabilities and maintained automated daily backups.
The contemporary republication attributed the announcement to Bitdefender and dated it August 6, 2012. It also reported that approximately 3 million web-malware incidents were discovered daily, but it identified no underlying dataset or original publishing organization, so that figure should be treated only as a claim repeated in that 2012 report.

Malware scanning
Bitdefender technology was described as the malware-detection layer used to examine WebsiteDefender customers’ websites. The announcement does not provide enough technical detail to establish the exact files, crawling depth, signatures or remediation workflow used by that integration.

Vulnerability monitoring
WebsiteDefender was presented as more than a malware scanner. It also monitored website vulnerabilities, helping operators identify weaknesses that could allow an attacker to inject malicious content or alter site files.
Automated backups
Daily automated backups were part of the service description. Backups can support recovery after a compromise, but their presence does not by itself prove that infected content would be removed or that a vulnerability would be fixed.

What current Acunetix documentation says about malware detection
Acunetix’s current materials describe capabilities under the Invicti Web + API branding. They should not be read as proof that the specific 2012 WebsiteDefender integration continues unchanged.
Malicious-link detection
Acunetix support says its malware-detection service identifies links to external URLs known to host malware or to be used for phishing attacks. A flagged link can mean that the scanned site was compromised and injected with a link, that an attacker placed the link through another weakness, or that the external destination itself has been compromised.

The documented response is to stop linking to the flagged URL and investigate the site. Acunetix also points operators toward Google Webmaster Tools or a comparable service for additional visibility into suspicious activity.
Scanning files and scripts found during a crawl
Current product documentation describes downloading files encountered during a crawl and scanning those files or scripts for malware. The product page names Microsoft Defender for Windows and ClamAV for Linux. A separate Acunetix support FAQ says Windows uses Windows Defender, while Linux or macOS uses a separately installed ClamAV installation. Because the two pages describe platforms differently, administrators should verify the engine and operating-system requirements for their specific edition.

Historical announcement versus current capabilities
| Comparison point | 2012 WebsiteDefender announcement | Current Acunetix/Invicti documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary detection target | Website malware scanning, as reported for WebsiteDefender users | Malicious external links plus files or scripts encountered during a crawl |
| Named detection source | Bitdefender malware-detection technology | Google and Yandex safe-browsing services for suspicious links; Windows Defender or ClamAV for crawled files, depending on platform and documentation |
| Broader service scope | Vulnerability monitoring and automated daily backups were included in the service description | Current pages reviewed describe web and API security scanning; they do not establish that WebsiteDefender’s backup service remains available |
| Product status | Historical announcement dated August 6, 2012 | Acunetix’s site now identifies the product as Invicti Web + API; continued WebsiteDefender integration is not established |
How to investigate a suspicious result
- Confirm what was flagged. Determine whether the alert concerns an external URL, a downloaded file or a script found during crawling.
- Inspect the affected page and source. Look for injected anchors, redirects, scripts, iframes or recently changed files.
- Remove or disable the malicious link. Acunetix’s guidance is to stop linking to an external URL identified as hosting malware or phishing.
- Check the originating account and vulnerability. Review administrator logins, content-management-system changes, plugins, server logs and recently modified files.
- Scan again after remediation. A clean rescan confirms that the detected content is no longer being found; it does not replace patching or credential rotation.
- Use an independent webmaster-security service when needed. Acunetix specifically mentions Google Webmaster Tools or a similar service as an additional source of information.
What this partnership does—and does not—tell website owners
- It shows that the 2012 WebsiteDefender offering combined scanning, vulnerability monitoring and backups with Bitdefender malware detection.
- It does not establish the integration’s present availability, supported websites, scan frequency or cleanup features.
- Current Acunetix documentation distinguishes suspicious-link detection from scanning files and scripts found during a crawl.
- A malware warning is an investigation signal, not proof by itself of which account, plugin or server component caused the incident.
- No named individual spokesperson or attributable personal quotation is supplied in the available announcement material.
Bottom line for readers researching Acunetix today
The Bitdefender–Acunetix announcement was a 2012 WebsiteDefender integration, not confirmation of a current Bitdefender product partnership. For present-day planning, consult the current Invicti Web + API documentation for supported scanning features and platform-specific engines, and verify directly whether any WebsiteDefender service or legacy integration is still available.
