Acetone peroxide, also known as triacetone triperoxide (TATP), is an explosive—not a do-it-yourself chemistry project. CISA describes it as extremely sensitive to impact, friction, static spark, and heat. If you encounter a suspected explosive device or material, do not touch or investigate it; move away and contact emergency services or law enforcement.
What is acetone peroxide?
Acetone peroxide is the common name often used for triacetone triperoxide, or TATP. Although its name may sound like an ordinary chemical product, TATP presents a severe explosive hazard. CISA’s Vehicle Inspection Guide describes it as extremely sensitive to impact, friction, static spark, and heat. That warning is not a safe-handling guide: it does not establish any safe threshold for contact or exposure.
What should you do if you suspect a device or material?
Treat a suspected explosive device or material as an emergency. Do not touch, move, open, test, or attempt to identify it. Leave the immediate area and contact emergency services or law enforcement from a safe location. ATF also advises reporting suspicious devices through its tip line; its Illegal Explosives page provides reporting information.
What does U.S. federal law say?
ATF summarizes federal explosives law as prohibiting the manufacture, storage, distribution, receipt, or transportation of explosive materials without a federal explosives license or permit. This is a general federal summary, not a complete statement of requirements for every circumstance; state and local laws may also apply. Consult the relevant authorities or qualified legal counsel for a specific situation.

ATF’s notice for the 2026 List of Explosive Materials says it is the same as the 2025 list and took effect June 22, 2026. List status and legal requirements can change, so check ATF’s current materials for updates.
