In February 2025, Acer CEO Jason Chen forecast a default 10% increase in U.S. PC prices, including laptops, to reflect tariffs on Chinese imports. That was a prediction—not confirmation that every Acer laptop rose by 10%. Later comments from Acer said the impact could vary, and the available reporting does not establish the actual price change for individual models.
What Acer’s CEO said
In an interview with The Telegraph, Acer CEO Jason Chen said the company would pass tariff costs on to customers. Ars Technica reported his comments on February 18, 2025: “We will have to adjust the end user price to reflect the tariff.” Chen added, “We think 10 percent probably will be the default price increase because of the import tax. It’s very straightforward.”
The 10% figure was Acer’s forecast for U.S. PC pricing at the time, not a published price list or a guarantee for every laptop. The contemporaneous coverage linked Chen’s rationale to a new 10% U.S. import tariff on Chinese goods. That describes the tariff context in the February 2025 report; it should not be read as a statement of current tariff rates.
When the forecasted increases were expected to appear
The February report said the change would not apply immediately to products shipped from China before the tariff took effect. Instead, Acer expected price effects to appear as later shipments arrived in the U.S. Existing inventory and newly imported stock could therefore have different cost histories.

Why the 10% figure did not guarantee a uniform increase
In May 2025, Acer told Laptop Mag that tariff effects could differ according to where a product was manufactured, when it arrived in the U.S., and negotiations with retailers and commercial and education customers. Acer also cited other factors. The company’s later explanation means the default estimate should not be treated as a fixed increase across all products or sales channels.
Separately, Acer channel chief Philip Burger told CRN that prices on certain large deals already in progress would not be marked up as tariffs increased. His comments concerned those channel deals; they do not establish how consumer retail prices changed.

What 10% would mean in dollars
Ars Technica cited a PC price range of $200 for a Chromebook to $3,800 for a gaming laptop. Applying the forecasted 10% to those endpoints gives an illustrative increase of about $20 to $380. These are calculations from the cited range, not observed increases for particular Acer models.

Did Acer laptop prices actually rise by 10%?
The cited reports document Acer’s forecast and its later qualifications, but they do not audit post-announcement prices model by model. They therefore do not establish whether the forecast took effect as stated or how much the price of any specific U.S. Acer laptop changed. A meaningful comparison would need to match the exact model and configuration, account for inventory and shipment timing, and distinguish retail stock from negotiated business or education deals.
