The Acer Predator 21 X was a real, commercially released gaming laptop—not a current Acer launch. Announced in 2016 and sold in limited quantities in 2017, it carried a reported U.S. launch price of $8,999. Acer said it planned to make only 300 individually numbered systems. As of August 2026, it is a discontinued collector’s machine that may appear on the used market, not a laptop Acer currently sells.
The contemporary availability report was published on June 13, 2017, when selected U.S. retailers had stock. AnandTech reported the 300-unit plan and $8,999 price; another contemporary report said Amazon was sold out while Micro Center and Newegg still had availability at that time.
What the Predator 21 X was
The Predator 21 X (model GX21-71) was Acer’s flagship desktop-replacement notebook, built around a 21-inch curved 21:9 screen. Its defining combination was unusual even by enthusiast-hardware standards:
- A 21-inch curved IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-Sync.
- Two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs running in SLI.
- A factory-overclockable Intel Core i7-7820HK processor.
- A mechanical, backlit keyboard with programmable keys and a convertible numeric keypad/touchpad.
- Integrated Tobii infrared eye tracking.
- A huge chassis weighing about 18.74 pounds (8.5kg), supplied in a rugged transport case.
Acer described it in corporate reporting as the world’s first curved-screen gaming notebook. That description is Acer’s characterization, rather than an independently maintained industry record.

Reported specifications describe the main retail configuration. Regional SKUs and final installed components can differ, so a used buyer should verify the exact GX21-71 identification and serial documentation.

Contemporary coverage supplied the detailed configuration and dimensions. Acer’s official GX21-71 manual documents the model, but does not establish current retail, repair or driver support.
Why the curved display mattered—and where it fell short
What it offered
- The 21:9 panel provided a wide field of view in games that supported ultrawide output.
- The 120Hz refresh rate and G-Sync were appropriate for high-frame-rate gaming of its era.
- The broad desktop could be useful for media and multitasking.
- The curved panel made the machine visually unlike an ordinary notebook.
What it did not guarantee
- 2560×1080 is wide, but modest in pixel count by 2026 standards.
- Curvature does not itself increase frame rate or graphics performance.
- The immersive effect depends on viewing distance, software support and personal preference; contemporary hands-on coverage questioned how much benefit the curve delivered.
- Older or poorly optimized software can show scaling, compatibility or letterboxing issues on 21:9 displays.
- A custom curved panel and hinge are difficult and potentially expensive to replace.
Tobii eye tracking added interface and game-control possibilities, but it was an extra feature rather than a substitute for conventional input.

Why it cost $8,999
The price reflected more than two graphics processors. Acer was producing a low-volume, highly specialized system with a custom 21-inch curved panel, oversized cooling hardware, a mechanical keyboard, 64GB of memory, multiple storage devices, eye-tracking hardware and a substantial case. Two mobile GTX 1080s were premium components in 2017, while the unusual chassis and limited production increased manufacturing costs.
The $8,999 figure is the original U.S. launch price, not a 2026 valuation. A scarce device can sell for less than its launch price if it is incomplete or faulty, or more if it is an exceptionally preserved collector’s package.
What “only 300” really means
Acer’s announced production plan was for 300 individually numbered machines. That supports describing the Predator 21 X as a limited run, but it does not prove that exactly 300 were ultimately sold, retained or still exist. The reviewed contemporary report does not provide an independent surviving-unit registry.

For a collector, the individual unit number, matching paperwork and provenance can matter. They should be verified rather than assumed from a marketplace description.
Availability in 2017 versus availability in 2026
The 2017 launch window
On June 13, 2017, the machine was available through selected U.S. retailers. The period report said Amazon.com was sold out while Micro Center and Newegg still showed availability. Those statements describe that 2017 snapshot and are not current retailer recommendations.
The 2026 situation
Acer’s surviving official material is a GX21-71 user manual, not a current product page. Search results show occasional listings for complete systems and parts, including memory and replacement chargers, but they do not establish dependable supply or a reliable completed-sale price. See the eBay model page, parts search and complete-laptop search. Treat any figure as an asking price unless a completed sale, currency, condition and accessories are documented.

Gaming strengths and practical weaknesses
Why it was impressive in its era
- Two GTX 1080s offered very high potential graphics performance for a 2017 notebook.
- The 120Hz ultrawide display, mechanical keyboard and generous memory suited an enthusiast desktop replacement.
- Connectivity included Thunderbolt 3, multiple display outputs and Gigabit Ethernet.
- The transport case made moving the system possible.
Why it is difficult to recommend as a modern gaming laptop
- SLI scaling depends on the game, driver and application; some newer software may ignore the second GPU.
- The GTX 1080 architecture is from the 2016–2017 generation and should not be treated as equivalent to a current high-end GPU without contemporary testing.
- At 18.74 pounds and up to roughly 3.3 inches thick, it is a transportable desktop replacement, not a practical commuting laptop.
- High power demands make demanding gaming primarily a plugged-in activity.
- RAID 0 can improve throughput but provides no redundancy: failure of either 512GB SSD can make the array inaccessible.
- Custom display, cooling, hinge, keyboard and dual-GPU components may be difficult to source or repair.
The reviewed sources establish specifications and design context, not modern benchmark results. They also do not establish full Windows 11 compatibility or current driver support; the official documentation is associated with Windows 10.

Acer supplied a Pelican-style rugged case that could be reused for luggage or equipment transport. For collectors, the case is significant because replacement cases are difficult to find and a bare laptop is not equivalent to a complete package. Check for the case, its latches or keys, all required power adapters, manuals, documentation, keycaps and any original accessories.

Used-buying checklist for 2026
Confirm the identity and completeness
- Verify the GX21-71 model, full SKU where applicable, serial number and individual unit number.
- Ask for photographs of the original case, manuals, labels and accessories.
- Confirm whether the storage, memory, GPUs and power equipment are original or replaced.
Test the display and hinge
- Request photographs or video of the entire curved surface at 120Hz.
- Check for dead pixels, backlight irregularities, flicker, color problems and physical damage.
- Operate the hinge and confirm the panel remains stable.
Test both graphics processors and cooling
- Verify that the operating system and graphics driver detect both GTX 1080 GPUs.
- Run a sustained load long enough to reveal crashes, artifacting, abnormal throttling or fan problems.
- Do not accept a listing that silently disables one GPU without adjusting expectations and price.
Inspect storage and power
- Check the health of both NVMe drives and confirm whether the RAID 0 array is intact.
- Back up immediately if you acquire a working machine; RAID 0 is not a backup.
- Confirm every required adapter is genuine, correctly rated and functional under load.
- Inspect both power inputs, cables and connectors for damage.
Check keyboard, keypad and case
- Test every mechanical key, backlight and programmable key.
- Verify that the numeric keypad converts correctly to a touchpad and that the touchpad works.
- Inspect keycaps, case latches, documentation and other proprietary parts.
Which buyer profile makes sense?
For modern gaming performance
Generally no. A current gaming laptop will normally provide newer CPU and GPU architectures, better performance per watt, more practical weight, current display choices and better operating-system support.

For an immersive large-screen setup
A desktop with a curved ultrawide monitor is usually more practical: its display, GPU and cooling are easier to replace or upgrade, and modern resolutions and aspect ratios are available without relying on a one-off chassis.
For technology collecting
Possibly. Prioritize a fully working, numbered unit with its original case, documentation, power supplies and clear provenance. Completeness and condition matter more than a headline claim that only 300 were planned.
For historical interest
Yes. The Predator 21 X represents an era when manufacturers pushed notebook form factors toward extravagant desktop-replacement designs, combining a curved display, SLI graphics and luxury packaging in one machine.
