The MediaTek Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 (CP514-5HN) looks compelling if you want a capable Chromebook that can also fold into tablet, tent, or presentation modes. In Chrome Unboxed’s July 2026 review, the reviewer praised its speed, keyboard, trackpad, and convertible design, while flagging weak speakers and hard-to-read backlighting in bright rooms. The exact display and memory configuration depend on the SKU, so confirm the listing before buying.
Which Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is this review about?
This review concerns the newer MediaTek Kompanio Ultra Spin 514 family, model CP514-5HN, as reviewed by Chrome Unboxed on July 1, 2026. It is not the Intel-based CP514-4HN reviewed separately by PCWorld. That earlier model used an Intel Core 3 100U with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage; its specifications and review findings should not be carried over to the MediaTek model. Chrome Unboxed’s review and PCWorld’s CP514-4HN review concern different generations.
Even within the CP514-5HN family, configuration matters. Google’s Chromebook Plus page lists 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, while Acer’s US CP514-5HN-K4ZE page lists 16GB LPDDR5X and 256GB storage. Acer’s listed configuration also has a different screen specification from the one described in the review. Check the full model number, memory, storage, and display on the retailer’s listing rather than relying on “Spin 514” alone. Is the Spin 514 a good 2-in-1 Chromebook?
Its strongest case is the combination of Chromebook Plus performance and a 360-degree hinge. Google describes laptop, tablet, tent, and display modes, giving the Spin 514 more flexibility than a conventional clamshell. That makes it a better fit for someone who will actually use touch, tablet reading, or a pen than for someone who only wants a laptop to type on a desk. Google’s 2025 launch announcement.

Chrome Unboxed’s reviewer found the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra configuration responsive with many browser tabs and virtual desks, and said Android apps performed particularly well during their use. These are practical review observations, not independent standardized benchmarks. Acer lists a 50 TOPS NPU for the CP514-5HN-K4ZE, but that manufacturer figure describes AI-processing capability; it does not by itself predict everyday app speed. Acer’s specifications.
Keyboard, trackpad, and speakers
The reviewer describes the keyboard as responsive for longer typing sessions and the trackpad as smooth and accurate. The main input drawback is visibility: gray keys with white backlighting made the symbols difficult to see in a bright room. The upward-firing speakers were another compromise; the reviewer found them short on fullness and bass, especially compared with the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14.
Display and ports depend on the exact SKU
Chrome Unboxed describes its review unit as a 14-inch 1920×1200 IPS touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate and 340 nits of brightness. It reports a 5MP webcam, two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a headphone/microphone jack, and a Kensington lock, with no HDMI port. Those are review-unit details, not a safe family-wide specification.

In contrast, Acer’s US CP514-5HN-K4ZE page specifies a 14-inch 2880×1800 IPS touchscreen at 60Hz. Google describes the family as available with a display up to 2.8K. The sources do not establish that the reviewed 120Hz unit and Acer’s US 60Hz listing are the same configuration, so buyers should use the exact regional SKU page to establish the screen resolution and refresh rate. If HDMI output is important, plan on checking a compatible USB-C dock; the review does not identify a tested dock or supported external-display mode.
Does the Spin 514 support a stylus?
Yes. Chrome Unboxed confirms that the reviewed convertible works with a compatible USI pen, which the reviewer used for notes, sketching, and marking up web pages and PDFs. The review does not name a specific pen model, so verify that a prospective stylus explicitly supports the exact Chromebook configuration before purchasing.
How long does the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 battery last?
Google advertises up to 17 hours, but its figure is based on pre-production units and actual battery life varies substantially with use. It is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every configuration or workload. Google’s launch announcement; Google Chromebook Plus product page.

In personal use, Chrome Unboxed’s reviewer reported getting through two full workdays before charging. The review passage does not specify a standardized workload or battery-test method, so treat that as one person’s experience rather than a repeatable runtime prediction. The clearest distinction is form factor: the Spin 514 is a convertible with tablet and tent modes, while the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 discussed in the review is a clamshell. Chrome Unboxed frames the Acer as the choice for someone attracted to the Lenovo’s performance but specifically seeking a convertible; that is the reviewer’s buying judgment, not a universal ranking. The reviewer also preferred the Lenovo’s speaker sound. The available comparison does not establish a complete, matched specification or performance table, so it is not enough to claim that one is better overall.

Google lists a $699 starting MSRP for a 12GB/256GB Chromebook Plus configuration. Chrome Unboxed’s review is internally inconsistent: its product card says $749.99 MSRP, while the body says $699 and mentions discounts as low as $499. Those are not reliable current street prices; verify today’s price and make sure the retailer is selling the CP514-5HN configuration you intend to buy. Who should buy the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514?
- Consider it if you want a Chromebook with a hinge that supports tablet, tent, and presentation use, and expect to make use of its touchscreen or compatible USI pen.
- Check the exact SKU first if display refresh rate, resolution, memory, or storage are deciding factors; published CP514-5HN specifications differ by source and configuration.
- Look elsewhere or audition it in person if strong built-in speakers or easy-to-read keyboard backlighting in bright rooms are priorities.
- Plan for an adapter or dock if your setup needs HDMI, because the review unit did not include an HDMI port.
Chrome Unboxed’s reviewer called it “the best convertible you can buy” and praised it as a way to get the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14-style experience in a convertible. That is the reviewer’s opinion based on their use, not an independently verified market-wide ranking.
