Verdict: The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 is one of the better-value large-screen Chromebooks for desk-based work, but it is not an automatic “new king.” Its 16-inch 1920×1200 display, number-pad keyboard and useful ports are compelling; middling independent battery results, a 1.7kg clamshell design and major differences between regional configurations make it a conditional recommendation.
What is the Acer Chromebook Plus 516?
The Chromebook Plus 516 is a family of 16-inch ChromeOS laptops rather than one fixed specification. Acer offers Intel processors up to Core 7, optional touchscreens, optional backlit keyboards and, on supported variants, Wi-Fi 7. Memory, storage, display touch capability and other features depend on the exact model and market. Acer’s own qualification is important: “Specifications may vary depending on the model and/or region. All models are subject to availability.”
Check the complete model number before buying. A retailer listing described simply as “Chromebook Plus 516” may not have the same processor, RAM, storage or touchscreen as another listing.

How fast is it for everyday work?
The entry-level Core 3 model is capable of normal ChromeOS work. TechRadar used its review unit for documents, spreadsheets, many browser tabs, Android games and Ultra HD streaming without reporting a fundamental performance problem. Its results were 295.772 in Jetstream2, 398.5ms in Kraken and 18.8 (±1.0) in Speedometer 3.0. Those are results from that publication’s unit and test conditions, not a performance guarantee for every 516.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Performance – Intel Core i3-1315U processor with 8GB RAM for fast multitasking and productivity.
ITPro’s assessment is more restrained: it considers the base Core 3 performance average and recommends Core 5 120U or Core 7 150U versions when you want more headroom. That is the practical dividing line. The Core 3 is appropriate for ordinary school and office use; a higher-tier CPU is the safer choice for sustained multitasking, demanding web applications and longer useful life.
Is the 16-inch screen good?
The 16:10 1920×1200 panel gives you more vertical workspace than a typical 16:9 budget laptop. It is useful for two documents side by side, long spreadsheets and keeping a browser window open beside a video call. TechRadar found its review display vibrant and sharp enough for its size.
Rank #2
- 【Large WUXGA Display for Focused Study】 Designed for immersive learning, this 16-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) IPS display offers a taller 16:10 aspect ratio, giving students more vertical space for reading, research, and document editing. The anti-glare coating and 300-nit brightness help reduce eye fatigue during long study sessions in classrooms, libraries, or at home.
- 【Powerful Performance for Academic Multitasking】 Powered by a 6-core Intel Core i3-1315U processor with up to 4.5GHz boost speed, this Chromebook Plus delivers smooth performance for coursework, presentations, and online learning platforms. - 【Versatile Connectivity for School Essentials】 Stay connected to all learning accessories with this Acer Chromebook featuring 2 USB-C 3.2 ports for charging, display output, and data, plus 2 USB-A 3.2 ports for keyboards, mice, and flash drives. An HDMI 1.4 port supports external monitors, while Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth ensure fast, stable connectivity.
- 【Long Battery Life for Full School Days】 Built to keep up with busy schedules, this Chromebook Plus offers up to 12.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. A full-size keyboard with numeric keypad, DTS Audio, and a high-quality front-facing camera make it well suited for lectures, virtual classes, group projects, and independent study anywhere.
At 16 inches, however, that resolution is not especially dense. ITPro notes that sharper panels and OLED competitors look more impressive. The reviewed configuration was a 60Hz matte IPS screen, and touch is optional rather than universal. Choose the 516 for physical size and workspace, not for premium contrast or pixel density.
Keyboard, ports and design
A full-size keyboard with a number pad is one of the strongest reasons to buy this Chromebook. Students entering figures, office users working in spreadsheets and anyone accustomed to a desktop keyboard benefit from the dedicated numeric block. Acer also adds a Quick Insert key on supported models. TechRadar praised the keyboard and touchpad on its unit.
Rank #3

- 【LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH LONG BATTERY LIFE】Built to move between home, office, and campus with a slim profile and approximately 3.75 lb weight. ChromeOS delivers fast startup, built-in protection, and up to 10 hours of battery life for all-day productivity.
The reviewed configuration included two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack. That is unusually convenient at this price and reduces the need for a hub. Both USB-C ports are on one side, and there is no SD card slot, so photographers and users moving large camera files should account for that limitation.
The chassis weighs about 1.7kg. It is a conventional clamshell, not a 360-degree convertible. Some versions may have touch, but a touchscreen does not turn the laptop into a tablet.
Rank #4
- Efficient Intel Core Processor: The 13th Gen Intel Core i3-1315U delivers smooth multitasking and enhanced Google AI features under the Chromebook Plus badge.
- Spacious WUXGA IPS Display: A 16 inch panel at 1920 by 1200 resolution offers wide viewing angles and a matte finish that reduces glare in bright rooms.
- Fast Wireless Connectivity: 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 paired with Bluetooth 5.3 keeps browsing, streaming, and cloud based apps running smoothly and reliably online.
- Built In Privacy Features: A physical camera shutter, discrete TPM module, and Kensington Nano lock slot support privacy and basic physical security daily.
- Long Lasting Battery Life: The built in battery is rated for up to 10 hours of use, supporting extended sessions away from a power outlet throughout the day.
How long does the battery last?
Battery life is the main reason not to call the Chromebook Plus 516 a universal winner. TechRadar’s 2025 continuous movie-playback test lasted 7 hours 35 minutes on its review unit. T3 reported approximately five to six hours between charges during general use on a lowest-spec unit in 2026. These tests used different laptops and methods, so neither figure predicts every configuration.
Acer lists a maximum runtime of 15.5 hours for UK model CB516-1H-71X5. That is the manufacturer’s maximum claim for that specific SKU, not an independently measured result and not a promise for the family. If you regularly need a full workday away from an outlet, smaller or more battery-focused alternatives are safer choices.

Who should buy it?
It suits you if
- You mostly work at a desk and want a large 16-inch 16:10 workspace.
- You use spreadsheets or data-entry software and value a full-size number pad.
- You want HDMI, USB-A and USB-C without relying on adapters.
- You can verify a Core 5 or Core 7 configuration when your workload needs extra headroom.
- You prefer ChromeOS simplicity and do not require Windows or macOS applications.
Look elsewhere if
- You commute frequently and prioritize low weight.
- You need dependable all-day unplugged use based on independent testing.
- You want a tablet mode, stylus-oriented design or a true 2-in-1 hinge.
- You need an SD card reader.
- You expect a particularly sharp, high-contrast or OLED display.
How it compares with other Chromebooks
| Alternative | Choose it when | Trade-off versus the 516 |
|---|---|---|
| Acer Chromebook Plus 514 | You want similar Chromebook Plus productivity in a smaller, lighter 14-inch format | Less screen area and no full 16-inch workspace |
| Acer Chromebook Plus 515 | You find the older model substantially cheaper and its specification meets your needs | The 516 provides the larger panel; the 515 may offer better value depending on the local deal |
| Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook | You care more about a convertible hinge and battery-focused portability than maximum performance or screen size | Smaller display and weaker performance potential |
Compare the exact local price, CPU, RAM, storage, screen panel, independently tested battery method, weight, touchscreen and hinge, keyboard layout and ports. Those variables matter more than the “Plus 516” name.
Buying checklist
- Copy the complete SKU from the retailer and match it with Acer’s regional specification page.
- Confirm the processor tier: Core 3 for basic work, Core 5 or Core 7 for more demanding multitasking.
- Check whether the screen is touch-enabled and whether the keyboard is backlit.
- Verify RAM, storage type and capacity; the reviewed Core 3 unit had 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS, while the identified UK Core 7 model has 16GB and a 512GB SSD.
- Check the return policy if battery life is critical, because published runtimes use different test conditions.
Final verdict
The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 is a strong big-screen budget Chromebook for a desk-based student, home user or office worker. Its roomy display, number pad and broad port selection solve problems that smaller Chromebooks create. It falls short of “king” status for buyers who need excellent battery endurance, maximum portability or a convertible design, and the base Core 3 model is less future-proof than Core 5 and Core 7 versions. Buy it when the exact configuration and local price match your priorities—not simply because the family name sounds premium.
