Verdict: Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is worth considering if you want cinematic, controller-friendly arcade air combat. Its dogfights, mission variety, and presentation are the draw; its long, melodramatic story is the main caveat. It aims for Top Gun-style spectacle, not realistic flight simulation.
What is Ace Combat 8?
Developed by Bandai Namco Aces Inc., Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is a flight-shooting game set in the series’ fictional Strangereal universe. The Federation of Central Usea has fallen under invasion by the Republic of Sotoa. You take on the symbolic identity of Wings of Theve and fight alongside Joker Flight.
The game launched worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Deluxe Edition digital preorders received early access from September 29, a benefit that has passed. Bandai Namco lists both single-player and multiplayer modes on the official game page; its launch announcement confirms the release date and platforms.
Does the flying carry the story?
For the most part, the flying is the reason to play. Official materials describe dogfights, mission-specific aircraft selection and customization, wingman attack and cover commands, dynamic weather, and large enemy superweapon encounters. Those are Bandai Namco’s feature descriptions, rather than independent findings about how well every feature works in play.
#1 Best Overall
- ACE COMBAT 8 DELIVERS HIGH-OCTANE AERIAL ACTION! Step into the cockpit and take flight as an elite pilot across stunning skies. Enter intense dogfights, eliminate threats, and rise through gripping missions to earn your wings. The game is developed by PROJECT ACES, the acclaimed team behind the franchise.
- AERIAL WARFARE IN LIVING SKIES. Campaign Mode showcases stunning visuals with dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes that capture the majesty of living skies. Feel the rush of a fast-paced arcade-style gameplay and deploy powerful weapons to dominate the battlefield.
- A VISCERAL JOURNEY FROM COCKPIT TO GROUND. Beyond the chaos in the air, breathtaking first-person scenes reveal your pilot’s story through breathtaking cinematics. Experience the pressure of command, the weight of decisions, and the bonds forged in battle. Between missions, bond with your squad members, rise to meet adversity, and prove yourself as a true ace.
TechRadar reviewer Joe Chivers praised the combat, mission variety, and visuals, but found fault with the story and the length of its cutscenes. He wrote: “Ace Combat 8 is a phenomenal arcade flight sim. You’ll feel like Maverick every single time you dodge an enemy missile or manage to take down a rival ace. Where it stumbles is its story, which drags on and attempts to cash dramatic checks that it simply cannot.”
Chivers said he completed the main storyline and replayed several Free Mission missions. His PC review used an RTX 4070 and a standard Xbox Wireless Controller, so that setup is context for his assessment—not a performance guarantee for other PCs. Read the TechRadar review for his full account.

Tom’s Guide reviewer Clayton Ashley also emphasized the tension between cinematic drama and the action, while describing the setting as fictional rather than a real-world conflict. His take is another reviewer’s assessment, not proof that all players will find the story overlong. Together, these reviews suggest a practical choice: if you mainly want compelling sorties, the campaign’s theatrical storytelling may be a tolerable cost; if you need a tightly paced story, it could be a frustration.
Is Ace Combat 8 like Top Gun or a flight simulator?
It is closer to cinematic aerial action than to a realistic flight simulator. The official feature descriptions focus on fast-paced combat, aircraft customization, wingman commands, weather, and spectacular enemy encounters. Tom’s Guide contrasts that fictional, cinematic approach with real-world mechanical accuracy. “Top Gun” is a useful reference for the spectacle and fighter-pilot fantasy, but it should not be read as a promise of realistic procedures or flight physics.

- TAKE FLIGHT AS AN ELITE ACE — Step into the cockpit and soar through thrilling missions, intense dogfights, and high-stakes aerial combat developed by PROJECT ACES.
- AERIAL WARFARE IN LIVING SKIES — Experience stunning visuals featuring dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes, realistic weather conditions, and breathtaking skies that transform every battle.
- FAST-PACED ARCADE AIR COMBAT — Engage enemy aircraft, deploy powerful weapons, and dominate the battlefield with the signature high-speed gameplay the ACE COMBAT series is known for.

You can play with a controller. Ashley wrote: “Though you can pair the game with a joystick and throttle, the game is made for a controller.” That is his assessment, and the available information does not establish a required flight peripheral or a compatibility list for specific sticks and throttles. See the Tom’s Guide review for his full opinion.
What is included in the online mode?
Ace Combat 8 includes ACE COMBAT ONLINE, with cross-platform play and cooperative and competitive modes, according to Bandai Namco. The Air Base serves as an online hub that can host up to 100 players; that figure describes the hub, not the number of players in a match. Online play also has a progression system separate from the single-player campaign. Details about service availability and post-launch content can change; Bandai Namco said additional post-launch content details would be announced later.

Which edition should you buy?
Bandai Namco lists Standard and Deluxe digital editions, along with the Joker Flight Pack. Choose a platform first—PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam—then check the current regional listing for its contents and price. The early-access window attached to Deluxe preorders ended with the October 2 launch, so it should not be treated as a current benefit.
| Edition | What the available information establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Listed by Bandai Namco as a digital edition. Specific additional bonuses are not stated on the cited material. | Players who want the game without choosing an expanded package. |
| Deluxe Edition | Listed as a digital edition. Digital preorders had early access beginning September 29, 2026; that benefit has passed. Check the current regional listing for other contents. | Players interested in the current digital bundle, after confirming its contents and price. |
| Joker Flight Pack | Includes the Deluxe Edition, a book of more than 200 pages, and two LP vinyl records. Availability and exact contents can vary by region or retailer. | Collectors who want the physical book and records as well as the game. |
The official site also references a seasonal pass, but the cited material does not establish its full contents or value. Bandai Namco says additional post-launch content details would be announced later, so compare the current offer rather than assuming what the pass includes. Check the official editions page and the retailer’s regional listing before buying.
Is Ace Combat 8 worth it?
It is a promising fit for players who want dramatic arcade dogfights, varied missions, and a campaign built around a fictional military conflict. The strongest case is the flight action and spectacle; the clearest reservation is that the story and cutscenes may feel excessive. If your priority is authentic flight mechanics, this is not presented as that kind of simulator. If you prefer a controller and enjoy cinematic combat, the reviewers’ accounts suggest the game is aimed at your preferences.
