The story casts you as the person taking on the identity of the legendary Wings of Theve, leading Joker Flight in a conflict involving the Federation of Central Usea. TechRadar reports that the presentation uses first-person cutscenes and brings propaganda and social media into the narrative. Those story details are part of the review’s account, not a measure of how every player will respond to the plot.
How the combat and campaign play
The core loop is mission-focused flying: maneuver through full 360-degree flight, engage aircraft, attack ground or naval targets, and adapt to changing weather. Bandai Namco’s walkthrough overview also describes defensive moves such as high-G turns, and real-time attack and cover commands for wingmen.

Aircraft choice is part of preparing for a mission. The game includes real-world and original aircraft, plus upgrade parts and special weapons for tailoring fighters to different tasks. TechRadar describes a campaign that mixes dogfights with close air support and attacks on enemy ships, giving the missions more variety than air-to-air encounters alone.
Wingmen are part of the tactical loop
You can direct wingmen during combat rather than treating them as background characters. The official walkthrough presents attack and cover commands as real-time tools, so the combat loop includes deciding when to press your own attack and when to use your formation to support it.

Campaign length depends on how you play
TechRadar’s reviewer took about 18 hours to complete all 30 missions. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not an official estimate; optional content, difficulty, and time spent replaying missions can change an individual run. The reviewer also played several Free Mission levels after finishing the main storyline.
What the PC review says—and what it does not
TechRadar’s reviewer praises the speed and sensation of aerial combat, the cloud visuals, and the feeling of piloting powerful aircraft. The review’s main reservations are lengthy cutscenes, an anticlimactic ending, and limited differentiation from Ace Combat 7 in some systems. The reviewer says the flying remains exciting when cutscenes are skipped; these are one outlet’s judgments, not a universal consensus.

The performance observation is narrowly scoped: TechRadar completed the main story and played several Free Mission levels on a PC with an Nvidia RTX 4070 at high graphics settings. The reviewer reported generally solid 60 fps, with dips during particularly hectic moments. They used an Xbox Wireless Controller and had not played online. This does not establish performance on other PC hardware, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S.

Does Ace Combat 8 have cross-play and co-op?
Yes. Bandai Namco announced cross-play for ACE COMBAT ONLINE, which has progression and save data separate from the campaign. The publisher describes an Air Base social hub that can accommodate up to 100 players, along with training for up to four players and temporary emergency missions. These are announced features; the available review did not test online play, so it cannot establish matchmaking quality, server reliability, or the experience of the live player population.

Which version should you buy?
The game is available on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, but the evidence here does not support a direct performance comparison between those platforms. The only specific frame-rate observation is TechRadar’s RTX 4070 PC test. Current prices and a like-for-like comparison of edition contents are not established here, so check the relevant store listings for current price, edition, and any available bonuses before buying.

If your priority is fast, cinematic arcade-style air combat, the available PC review gives a positive case: it highlights exhilarating flying, striking clouds, and varied mission types. If you are sensitive to long story sequences, or expect a major reinvention of Ace Combat 7, the review’s criticisms are worth weighing. The evidence supports a campaign-focused recommendation for action-flight fans; it does not settle how well online play performs or which platform runs best.
