What game is the headline about?
It is ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, Bandai Namco’s flight-shooting game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The publisher lists both single-player and multiplayer modes. It gives 2 October 2026 as the release date; its launch announcement says Deluxe Edition early access began on 29 September, before the worldwide launch on 2 October. The headline comes from a first-person feature by Max Freeman-Mills, published by T3 on 5 October 2026. He played a review-code PC version for several days and had reached roughly ten campaign missions. Why does the writer regret not choosing PS5 Pro?
It is a social-platform choice, not a performance verdict. Freeman-Mills says he normally plays multiplayer on PS5 Pro with friends. Playing this game on PC meant he was away from the platform where he usually meets them, which is the personal “mistake” behind the headline.

His feature does not test the PS5 Pro version or compare it with PC. It therefore cannot establish the console’s frame rate, image quality, enhancements or relative performance. Bandai Namco says the game has cross-play multiplayer in its launch announcement, but that does not change the writer’s account of where he prefers to play with his friends.
What is the game like so far?
A campaign built around flight missions
Freeman-Mills describes a flight-only game structured around missions, briefings and story scenes. In the early story, the player takes on the “Wings of Theve” identity after an ace is lost. The wider campaign follows forces trying to retake territory after an invasion. The missions he describes include escort duties, ground attacks and dogfights.
Two approaches to controlling the aircraft
The feature reports two control schemes: a traditional approach based on pitch and roll, and a more forgiving option that makes maneuvering easier at the cost of some maneuverability. That gives players a choice between more direct control and a less demanding way to fly; the account does not establish that either scheme is best for every player.

Visuals and PC performance in one setup
Freeman-Mills praises the clouds, weather, aircraft detail and moving aircraft components. On his loaned PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, he reports steady 60 fps at 1440p with Ultra settings and no issues in his experience. He says 4K strained that system enough that he needed frame generation to smooth things out. These are observations from his particular PC and settings, not a controlled benchmark or a prediction of performance on other PCs or consoles.

Choose based on how you expect to use the game, rather than treating the headline as a platform recommendation.
- If playing with friends matters most: Start with the platform where your friends are available. The writer’s regret came from missing his usual multiplayer setting. Bandai Namco describes cross-play, but the feature does not detail its setup or how it affects a particular group’s sessions.
- If you mainly want the campaign: The early PC account centers on mission variety, story scenes and aerial combat. It does not establish that the campaign is better on one platform.
- If you are choosing PC for graphics or performance: Treat the RTX 5070 Ti results as one person’s experience at stated settings, not as evidence that PC is superior to PS5 Pro.
- If you prefer a physical console edition: Bandai Namco lists a Standard Edition for PS5. Its official page also describes the Joker Flight Pack, which includes the Deluxe Edition, an artbook titled ACES at WAR: A HISTORY 2029 (over 200 pages), and two soundtrack LPs. The page does not confirm current retailer stock.
Do you need a flight stick?
The available account does not establish that a flight stick is required or confirm compatibility for any specific accessory. Freeman-Mills mentions flight sticks as equipment PC players might have, but that is not proof that a stick is necessary or that a given model works with the game. If an accessory matters to your setup, check the game’s current platform-specific documentation or the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying.
