Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is strongest when you’re in the cockpit: reviewers praise its fast, tactile dogfights, varied missions, and striking clouds and environments. Its most commonly noted drawback is the story, whose long cutscenes and payoff may frustrate players eager to get back to flying. It launched worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Ace Combat 8 pros and cons at a glance

Pros Cons
Reviewers praise responsive, high-speed aerial combat and the sensation of controlling an aircraft. Long story cutscenes interrupt the action, and at least one reviewer found the ending anticlimactic.
Missions include dogfights, close air support, attacks on ships, wingman commands, and battles against massive targets. The campaign’s fictional, blockbuster premise is not a fit for players seeking realistic flight simulation or military history.
Clouds and environments stood out in TechRadar’s review. TechRadar found similarities to Ace Combat 7 and questioned how much wingman orders and loadout choices affect the experience.
Online play offers co-op, competitive modes, cross-play, and separate online progression, according to the publisher. PC performance can vary by hardware; one reviewer’s results do not establish performance on other PCs or consoles.
Review coverage reports a simpler flight model alongside a more demanding option. Those adjustable options do not change the game’s arcade orientation.

What are the main advantages?

Fast, satisfying flight combat

In TechRadar’s review, Joe Chivers summarized combat as “fun, varied, and razor-sharp,” praising dogfights and missile evasion. Tom’s Guide also liked the direct, tactile connection between controller input and aircraft movement. These are reviewer judgments, but they point to the game’s central strength: the pleasure of maneuvering and fighting, rather than simulating every aspect of real-world aviation.

Missions change the task, not just the target

The campaign mixes air-to-air engagements with close air support and attacks on enemy ships, according to TechRadar’s review. Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview also describes wingman commands, aircraft and weapon customization, and battles against massive targets. That variety gives missions different objectives and scales, even though they remain part of a fictional arcade combat game.

Striking skies and environments

TechRadar singled out the clouds and environments as a visual highlight. Treat that as the reviewer’s assessment, not a measurable guarantee about image quality on every platform or display.

Online options and cross-play

Bandai Namco describes cooperative play, PvPvE, temporary PvP events, separate online progression, and a cross-play Air Base lobby. The publisher says that lobby can hold up to 100 players; that is a lobby-capacity figure, not the size of an individual match. The official multiplayer overview explains the announced modes.

More than one way to handle the controls

TechRadar reports that the game offers two flight models, including a simpler approach, as well as a colorblind HUD option and text-to-speech settings. Tom’s Guide says a joystick and throttle can be paired, while TechRadar found a standard Xbox Wireless Controller worked well. No exact flight-stick model is established as compatible here, so a controller is the more clearly supported starting point.

What are the main disadvantages?

Story scenes can slow the campaign

TechRadar lists lengthy cutscenes among its reasons to avoid the game and describes the ending as anticlimactic. Tom’s Guide likewise preferred the flying to the campaign narrative. The story follows a fictional conflict involving the Federation of Central Usea and the Republic of Sotoa, with the player flying as part of Joker Flight. Whether the melodrama works for you is subjective, but players who want near-constant action may find the interruptions a poor fit.

It is an arcade game, not a flight simulator

The setting, combat, and scale are designed for dramatic aerial action. Tom’s Guide characterizes the experience as blockbuster spectacle rather than realistic dogfighting or geopolitics. If you want authentic flight procedures, real-world military operations, or simulation-first handling, the game’s strengths are aimed elsewhere.

Some changes may feel incremental

TechRadar saw similarities to Ace Combat 7 and questioned how much impact wingman orders and loadout choices have on the campaign. This is one reviewer’s comparison, not a consensus or a claim that those systems make no difference.

One PC test does not predict performance everywhere

TechRadar tested the PC version on a system with an RTX 4070 and reported generally solid 60 fps at high settings, with dips in hectic moments. That result applies to the reviewer’s hardware and settings; it does not establish expected performance on other PC configurations or on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

ACE COMBAT 7: Skies Unknown Deluxe Edition (Switch)
  • Unreal Engine 4 Technologies - Breathtaking clouds coupled with highly detailed aircraft and photorealistic scenery make this the most engaging Ace Combat to date.
  • Dynamic Weather - Witness the sudden changes during your flight and strive to fight the environmental conditions to take advantage over your enemy.
  • Return To Strange Real-World - The alternative Ace Combat universe is composed of real-world current and near-future weapons, but with a history steeped in Ace Combat lore.

Who is Ace Combat 8 a good fit for?

  • Consider it if you want fast arcade dogfights, cinematic missions, and aerial action that responds directly to your controls.
  • Consider it if you enjoy changing objectives, from air combat to supporting ground forces or attacking ships.
  • Look elsewhere if you want a realistic flight simulator, or if long narrative scenes are likely to detract from your enjoyment.
  • Be cautious if you expect a major break from Ace Combat 7; TechRadar’s review found familiar elements, though that judgment may not match every player’s priorities.

The publisher announced Standard and Deluxe editions, preorder bonuses, a Premium Ace Pass, and a Joker Flight Pack offer. Those announcements establish what was offered, not what remains available after launch. Check the current platform store or retailer listing for edition contents, price, stock, and any remaining offers before purchasing. The publisher’s edition announcement describes the announced editions and bonuses.

For controls, a standard controller is a sensible first choice: reviewers specifically describe successful controller play. A joystick-and-throttle setup may appeal if you want a more immersive arrangement, but the available review coverage does not confirm support for any particular model.

How long is the campaign?

TechRadar’s Joe Chivers reported taking around 18 hours to complete all 30 missions in his playthrough. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed completion time; pace, difficulty, and time spent on other content can change how long a player takes.
