Short answer: AMD documents the KR260 as a Vitis-customizable robotics platform, but KR260 is not among the prebuilt embedded base platforms listed for Vitis 2024.2. You can use AMD’s starter Linux image to evaluate its supplied accelerated applications; building a custom Vitis 2024.2 design requires a verified, project-specific platform and runtime path. The available documentation does not establish a turnkey KR260 platform for 2024.2 or a measured performance result for a particular workload.
What does “acceleration on KR260 with Vitis 2024.2” mean?
The KR260 Robotics Starter Kit is an evaluation and development platform based on the K26 system-on-module (SOM). The kit combines a non-production K26 SOM with a carrier card and thermal solution. AMD presents it as a way to evaluate target applications and develop designs intended for production K26 SOMs—not as a production board in itself.
Vitis can be part of a KR260 development workflow: AMD says the kit supports customization through Vitis platforms, acceleration overlays, and Vivado board files. But that general compatibility statement is not the same as having a ready-made KR260 target in every Vitis release. For Vitis 2024.2, the bundled-platform list is the key qualification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes Vitis 2024.2 include a prebuilt KR260 platform?
No KR260 platform appears in AMD’s Vitis 2024.2 list of installed prebuilt embedded base platforms. That list names VEK280, VCK190 (base and DFX), VMK180, ZCU102 (base and DFX), and ZCU104. AMD’s Vitis 2024.2 release documentation also says users can create custom embedded platforms. Taken together, this means a custom platform is a possible route in principle; it does not establish a ready-to-use KR260 platform, a validated recipe for a particular design, or compatibility with any arbitrary board image.

Before committing to a custom acceleration project, confirm the complete software and hardware combination for that project. In particular, the board support package, platform, XRT, target Linux image, and Vitis/Vivado versions need to agree. AMD’s Vitis 2024.2 setup documentation discusses installing Vitis and XRT and making platform files discoverable through PLATFORM_REPO_PATHS. That environment variable helps Vitis locate platform files; it does not create a KR260 platform or prove that one is compatible.
- Established: AMD describes KR260 as customizable with Vitis, and Vitis 2024.2 permits custom embedded platforms.
- Not established by those statements: a bundled KR260 base platform for Vitis 2024.2, a verified build procedure for a specific custom design, or an image that is compatible with every such build.
Which KR260 path should you start with?
Choose based on whether you want to evaluate AMD’s supplied examples or develop a custom hardware/software design. These are different workflows, not interchangeable stages with a documented automatic migration between them.

|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Linux image and prebuilt accelerated applications | Evaluating the documented KR260 examples on the kit | Write the SOM Starter Linux image to microSD, boot the board, and follow the guide for trying the supplied applications. | The starter-image instructions are for that evaluation path; they do not prove the image is suitable for a custom Vitis 2024.2 build. |
| Custom Vitis platform and application development | Adapting or building a project-specific design | Establish a compatible platform, tools, XRT, and target runtime environment for the chosen project. | KR260 is absent from the Vitis 2024.2 bundled base-platform list, so verify the platform/build path rather than assuming a default target. |
How do you get started with the KR260 Starter Kit?
For evaluating the supplied applications, AMD’s KR260 software getting-started instructions begin with the SOM Starter Linux image on a microSD card. The board guide then covers powering and booting the kit and running prebuilt accelerated applications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use AMD’s KR260 user guide to obtain the SOM Starter Linux image and follow its image-writing instructions for a microSD card. The cited guide excerpt does not specify a card capacity or performance class, so check the current image instructions rather than guessing.
- Insert the prepared card, connect the board as directed by the guide, and power on the KR260.
- Follow the guide’s instructions for the supplied prebuilt applications. Treat the image and software combination as the documented evaluation setup, not as an assumed runtime for a separately built Vitis 2024.2 design.
Keep the host development machine distinct from the target board. AMD’s Vitis 2024.2 installation requirements provide host operating-system options and state that the application-acceleration development flow is not supported on Windows. That host requirement does not specify which Linux image the KR260 must run: the target image is a separate compatibility decision for the selected platform and application.

What accelerated applications does AMD document for KR260?
AMD’s KR260 materials describe these as software-controllable, application-specific reference designs that developers can customize and enhance. The Kria Robotics Stack is presented as an integrated set of robotics libraries and utilities with a ROS 2-centric development approach. The examples below illustrate documented use cases; they are not universal performance guarantees.
ROS 2 perception
AMD describes an application intended to improve image-processing throughput, an important component of robotics perception, while reducing host CPU load. Its documented setup uses Gazebo as the data source and virtual environment with Ubuntu Linux 22.04. This is AMD’s description of the application, not an independently measured result for every workload or Vitis 2024.2 configuration.

ROS 2 multi-node communications over TSN
AMD lists an accelerated application that applies ROS 2 in a time-sensitive networking (TSN) communications infrastructure developed using the Kria robotics stack. The documentation identifies the use case; it does not provide a general latency or network-performance guarantee.
10GigE vision-camera defect detection
AMD describes a hardware-accelerated machine-vision application for defect detection on KR260. Its documented components include a Framos SLVS-EC sensor interface, an Euresys 10GigE vision interface, and a defect-detection algorithm using the Vitis Vision Library. The named interfaces are part of that example; they should not be read as a requirement for every KR260 application.

What performance can you expect?
The cited AMD material does not provide a measured benchmark for a specified KR260 workload built with Vitis 2024.2. It therefore cannot support a particular speedup, throughput figure, or claim that a custom design will outperform a software implementation by a given amount. AMD’s descriptions of improved image-processing throughput and reduced host CPU load apply to its ROS 2 perception example, not to arbitrary designs.
For a project decision, identify the workload and its success criteria first, then verify that the intended platform and target image work together. Measure the application under its actual operating conditions; do not infer performance from the fact that an example is described as accelerated.
What to verify before building a custom design
- Which exact KR260 platform files, board support, and tool versions are supported for the design you intend to build.
- Whether the required Vitis and XRT versions align with those platform files and with the target Linux image.
- Whether your host operating system is supported for the Vitis application-acceleration development flow; AMD says that flow is not supported on Windows.
- Whether the starter image is documented for your particular custom deployment. Its use in the prebuilt-application setup alone is not proof of that compatibility.
- Which interfaces and application components the design actually needs. KR260’s carrier provides a range of robotics-oriented interfaces, but the presence of an interface does not establish that a particular software stack or custom platform supports it.
AMD’s relevant materials are the Kria KR260 Robotics Starter Kit Datasheet, the Kria KR260 Robotics Starter Kit User Guide (UG1092), and the Vitis Release Notes and Installation Guide (UG1742) for version 2024.2, along with the Vitis 2024.2 setup and installation-requirements documentation. The KR260 documents are dated 2024; UG1742 identifies the 2024.2 release notes as dated March 17, 2025. Check AMD’s current documentation for changes to platform availability, images, and tool support before selecting a build path.
