Windows 11 version 24H2 no longer includes the AC-3 (Dolby Digital) codec by default. That does not mean every PC running 24H2 lacks AC-3: Microsoft says many manufacturers preinstall it, and upgrading from an earlier Windows version retains it. Whether a particular computer can play an AC-3 audio track therefore depends partly on how Windows was installed and what the device maker included.
What changed in Windows 11 24H2
Microsoft describes AC-3 as an audio codec for multichannel, or surround-sound, audio and identifies it as Dolby Digital. Its Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance says: “Beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows.” The change is about Windows’ default inclusion of the codec, not a claim that AC-3 playback has been removed from every 24H2 PC.
Why AC-3 playback differs between 24H2 PCs

These are different installation and device configurations; the version number alone does not establish whether AC-3 is present on a particular PC.

A playback error can mean the file needs a codec that is not installed or supported, but a codec is not the only possible cause. Microsoft also identifies player installation or update problems and DRM-related issues among Windows Media Player error categories.

- Check whether the file’s audio uses AC-3. If it does, the 24H2 default-inclusion change may be relevant. A playback failure by itself does not prove that AC-3 is the cause.
- Consider how 24H2 reached the PC. An upgrade from an earlier Windows version retains AC-3 according to Microsoft. Device manufacturers may also preinstall the codec.
- Use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance to assess the error. Check whether the problem points to a missing or unsupported codec, a Windows Media Player installation or update issue, or DRM.
Is there a universal Microsoft Store fix?
Microsoft’s troubleshooting page lists Store extensions for MPEG-2 video, HEVC, VP9, AV1, and Web Media. It does not list an AC-3 extension or provide a universal procedure for installing AC-3 on affected PCs. Do not assume that one of those other extensions restores Dolby Digital playback.
Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a single download or installation method that works for every 24H2 computer. It also does not specify whether a clean installation retains a manufacturer-provided codec. Check the device maker’s support information for the particular PC rather than relying on an unverified codec download or unrelated Store extension.
