The Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that roughly 9,000 U.S. personnel were heading to the Middle East aboard two naval groups. The figure—more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines—came from an unnamed U.S. official. AP’s report describes an en-route naval deployment; it does not establish that the ships later arrived or that these personnel were ground troops entering Iran.

What the reported deployment includes

AP named two groups on the way to the region:

  • USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group: The group includes the cruiser USS Chosin.
  • USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group: The group includes the amphibious landing ships USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage.

The personnel figure refers to sailors and Marines aboard naval formations. It should not be read as 9,000 troops being sent ashore in Iran.

Which U.S. naval forces AP said were already in the region

At the time its October 1 report was published, AP said the carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, along with the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group, were already in the Middle East. Those forces are distinct from the Theodore Roosevelt and Makin Island groups AP described as en route.

AP characterized the regional naval presence as more than 20,000 sailors and Marines and hundreds of aircraft. It also reported that the Navy had last had three carrier strike groups in the Middle East in April; the report excerpt does not specify the year for that reference.

Three carriers by late October was a possibility, not a confirmed arrival

The unnamed official told AP that the new movement could mean three carriers in the region as early as the end of October. That was a conditional projection, not confirmation that the ships had arrived or a definite schedule. AP’s report does not establish their subsequent status.

Why AP said the deployment was happening

AP placed the movement amid President Donald Trump’s warnings that further strikes against Iran could be possible. The report also said Trump claimed early indications linked Iran to a co-pilot who attacked his captain on an Israel-bound flight. That is Trump’s reported allegation; AP’s excerpt provides no independent corroboration, so it does not establish Iranian responsibility.

How the report sourced the 9,000 figure

AP attributed the operational details to a U.S. official who spoke anonymously because the information concerned sensitive military operations. The roughly 9,000 total is therefore an estimate reported by AP from an unnamed source, not a publicly named-source military announcement. The report was published by The Irish News on October 1, 2026: The Irish News.
