A 2017 study of soils from the abandoned South Terras uranium mine in Cornwall found uranium associated with arsenic-bearing minerals, including meta-zeunerite. The finding may help researchers understand how uranium behaves in soil, but it does not show that arsenic is a safe or effective cleanup treatment.
What researchers found at South Terras
South Terras, in Cornwall’s St Austell district, operated from 1873 to 1930. The peer-reviewed study reports that the mine produced 736 tonnes of uranium during that period. The researchers examined soils linked to two historic working areas: the Ochre Works, where iron ore was smelted, and the Dressing Floor, where uranium ore and mine spoil were processed. The 2017 paper in npj Materials Degradation describes the study and its methods.
Bulk analyses of sampled surface and near-surface soils found uranium below 1,690 parts per million (ppm), arsenic at 1,830 ppm, and beryllium at about 250 ppm. These figures describe the samples and locations studied; they are not mine-wide averages or estimates of present-day exposure.
Uranium occurred in arsenic-bearing mineral phases
Using broader chemical analyses together with micro-focus X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and diffraction, the team characterised mineral phases and uranium speciation. They reported uranium associated with arsenic-bearing phases, including meta-zeunerite, an insoluble uranium-arsenic mineral. The work offers a mineralogical explanation for how uranium may be retained in these particular soils.

How could arsenic affect uranium contamination?
The key is the form uranium takes in its surroundings. Elements can occur in different chemical and mineral forms, and those forms can influence how readily they dissolve or move. At South Terras, the researchers’ observations indicate that uranium and arsenic were associated in a mineral phase that is described as insoluble. That association can help explain uranium retention under the sampled site conditions.
This is evidence about natural processes at one historic mine, not a demonstration that arsenic removes uranium from contaminated soil. Chemistry World’s 2018 report described the finding as the first reported instance of arsenic controlling uranium contamination at a site of this kind. That framing should not be mistaken for a general treatment result: the study did not test adding arsenic, establish that doing so would be safe, or produce a cleanup protocol.

Does this mean the mine has been cleaned up?
No. The study investigated soil chemistry and mineralogy; it was not a field trial of a remediation product or engineered cleanup. Its wider relevance is as a possible clue to how uranium release and retention work in particular environments, knowledge that may contribute to future remediation research. The study does not establish current site-wide conditions, exposure risk, or whether South Terras has been cleaned up.
Lead author Claire Corkhill described the broader objective to Chemistry World: “Our goal is to develop a broad understanding of how specific radioactive elements behave in certain environments, so that effective soil remediation strategies can be developed.” That is a research aim, not a claim that this study delivered a deployable strategy.

How this differs from other Cornwall mine-water projects
Other mine pollution programmes in Cornwall illustrate different problems and approaches; they do not validate the South Terras soil finding.
- Wheal Jane: The government’s case study describes pumping and treating mine water to remove multiple metals, including arsenic. Its reported treatment volumes and metal-removal figures concern Wheal Jane and mixed-metal water, not uranium-bearing soil at South Terras.
- Coombe: The government describes a separate passive mine-water treatment pilot using a Vertical Flow Reactor. It is another distinct project, not evidence that the South Terras mineral association is an established remediation method.
A University of Manchester research record also concerns uranium and radium behaviour in sediments near South Terras, but its abstract does not establish current site-wide risk or quantify uranium’s contribution to waterways. The record is available from the university.
