Hackster.io reports that JT Jameson, associated with the YouTube channel Serial Hobbyism, built a custom device that launches a grappling hook with compressed CO₂ and then uses a motorized winch to pull its tether upward. The report says Jameson ascended 10 meters in three seconds during demonstrations, but that figure is not independently verified. The project is not documented as a retail product or a certified climbing device.
How the grappling gun works
Hackster.io describes two distinct operations: launching the hook and hauling the tether. A small CO₂ cartridge reportedly supplies 800 PSI to propel the hook, which is connected to the device by a spool of paracord. After the hook is anchored, a thumb-operated throttle controls the winch that pulls the user upward. The report says the device can be held by its built-in handle or attached to a conventional climbing harness.
That account describes the build, not a verified operating procedure. It does not establish safe anchoring, load limits, or whether the launch and ascent system has been tested to climbing-equipment standards.

What Hackster.io says is inside
The reported drive system uses a 14-pole brushless outrunner motor of the type intended for electric-skateboard propulsion, geared down 9:1 to increase torque. An Arduino Nano on a custom PCB controls a 200A electronic speed controller (ESC). The report lists two LiPo batteries with a combined capacity of 1,800mAh, configured at 12s, and says the ESC supports regenerative charging during descent. The frame combines custom-fabricated aluminum and steel parts.

Hackster.io does not provide exact manufacturer part numbers or revisions, nor a complete bill of materials. The component description is therefore not enough to reproduce or assess the device. In particular, the named electronics should not be read as a recommendation to build a person-lifting machine.
What the reported tests show—and do not show
Hackster.io says Jameson tested the device in a climbing gym and on park trees. It reports an ascent of 10 meters in three seconds. That is a result attributed to Jameson’s demonstration, not an independently measured or reproducible performance figure; the available account supplies no test protocol or independent validation.

The report also provides no safety certification. Its description cannot establish that the device, its anchor, tether, winch, frame, or harness connection is suitable for climbing or for any particular load. A demonstration is not a substitute for rated-load data, manufacturer instructions, or an independent safety assessment.
Can you buy this grappling gun?
Hackster.io presents Jameson’s device as a custom maker build, not a documented retail model. The article distinguishes it from commercial motorized ascenders: those are a separate product category intended for recreational or commercial climbing, and are not designed to fire a grappling hook. A buyer comparing legitimate climbing equipment should look for a stated intended use, rated load, applicable certification, and manufacturer instructions. The report gives no comparable specifications for Jameson’s build.
