A tiny crystal of water-bearing ringwoodite trapped inside a diamond offered evidence that Earth’s mantle transition zone can store water. The discovery, reported in 2014, did not reveal a hidden underground sea: the “ocean” in the headline refers to water held within minerals, and the possibility of a reservoir larger than all surface oceans was an extrapolation, not a measured total.
What was found inside the diamond?
Chemistry World reported in March 2014 that a diamond enclosed a tiny, water-bearing crystal of ringwoodite, a mineral associated with the deep Earth. The report presented the inclusion as direct evidence supporting the idea that water can be stored in the mantle transition zone. The Royal Society of Chemistry later published an educational-page version of the coverage, attributing it to Chemistry World.
This was a mineral inclusion, not a sample of free-flowing water. The reported observation was the water-bearing ringwoodite crystal; the diamond provided a way for a fragment from deep within Earth to reach the surface.

What does “Earth’s interior ocean” mean?
“Ocean” is figurative shorthand. It describes water stored in deep-Earth minerals, not a vast pool or sea of liquid water beneath the ground. At the extreme pressures and temperatures of the mantle, water can be incorporated into minerals rather than existing as a familiar surface ocean.

The report placed the relevant region in the mantle transition zone, at roughly 500 km below the surface. That depth describes the region associated with the finding; it does not mean the crystal itself was a body of water at that depth.
Was the mantle reservoir proven to contain more water than all the world’s oceans?
No. The report said the broad reservoir could hold more water than all the world’s oceans combined, but that was an inference about a large region of the mantle—not a direct measurement of its total water inventory. A tiny inclusion can support the presence of water in a mineral and a region; it cannot by itself establish the total amount stored throughout that region.

That distinction matters when comparing the deep-Earth possibility with surface oceans. The headline compares a projected mineral-bound reservoir with familiar bodies of water, but the evidence types differ: the ocean inventory is a surface-scale quantity, while the mantle figure is a possibility inferred from limited evidence. The cited coverage provides no quantified global total or uncertainty range that would make the comparison a measured statistic.
