Storage networking evolved by separating data from the server that uses it—and then by abstracting physical disks into logical pools and virtual disks. A storage area network (SAN) typically gives servers shared storage as block devices; network-attached storage (NAS) typically provides files over network protocols. Those are different access models, and storage virtualization is the layer that can make physical capacity appear as logical resources.

What is a storage area network?

A storage area network is a network that connects servers to shared storage, usually presenting that storage to each server as block devices. A server can work with a presented volume much as it would with a locally attached disk, even though the storage is in a separate array and reached over a fabric. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) describes Fibre Channel as “a high-speed data transfer technology that is designed to connect general purpose computers, mainframes, and supercomputers to storage devices.” SNIA’s Fibre Channel explainer dates the technology’s beginnings to 1988 and the first publication of the FC-PH standard to 1994. Those are technology and standards milestones, not a single date for the arrival of SAN deployments; Micron’s broad timeline places SAN introduction in the 1990s.

In a traditional Fibre Channel SAN, servers (hosts) and storage arrays communicate through a dedicated fabric. Separating storage from a particular server makes it possible for multiple authorized hosts to access shared arrays. Fabric design and administration also provide ways to manage connectivity and build redundancy. Fibre Channel is one transport for a SAN, not a synonym for SAN itself.

What is the difference between SAN and NAS?

The key difference is the abstraction presented to the server or client: a SAN generally presents blocks, while NAS generally presents files. Popular writing sometimes uses the labels loosely, but the distinction is useful when considering how applications connect to storage.

Aspect SAN NAS
What the client receives Block storage, commonly presented as a volume to a host File shares reached over network file protocols
Common protocols or transports Fibre Channel or iSCSI; NVMe over Fabrics is another way to carry block storage SMB or NFS
Typical fit Applications that need host-managed block volumes and shared-array access Users and applications that need shared files and directories
Infrastructure consideration May use a dedicated Fibre Channel fabric or an Ethernet network configured for storage traffic Uses an IP network and file-sharing services

These are typical patterns, not rigid limits on what a particular product can support. The access model matters more than the hardware’s marketing label: a system may provide more than one kind of storage service.

How did storage networks develop?

1. Direct-attached storage created server-bound capacity

In direct-attached storage (DAS), disks are closely tied to an individual server. As organizations added servers and data, capacity and administration could become siloed: one machine might have unused space while another needed more, and sharing or managing data across machines was harder. Micron’s high-level history places DAS in the 1970s. Treat that as a broad era, not a precise invention date.

2. LAN file sharing made storage reachable by other computers

Network file sharing let clients access files held on another computer over a local-area network. NAS became a way to provide that file service as a dedicated storage system. Micron places LAN file sharing and NAS in the 1980s as a broad historical period. This solved a different problem from a SAN: it shared files rather than presenting block devices to hosts.

3. Fibre Channel fabrics separated shared storage from individual servers

Fibre Channel development began in 1988, while FC-PH was first published in 1994, according to SNIA. Fibre Channel fabrics made a purpose-built connection between hosts and shared block storage possible. The architectural change was not simply faster links: storage could be decoupled from one server, reached by multiple hosts, and managed through fabric connectivity. A dedicated fabric also means additional infrastructure and operations distinct from ordinary Ethernet networking.

4. Ethernet carried file and block storage traffic

SMB and NFS file sharing became more common, and iSCSI brought block sharing over Ethernet into wider use across the late 1990s and 2000s, according to SNIA’s 2021 architecture presentation. Ethernet-based storage could reuse familiar networking infrastructure rather than require a separate Fibre Channel network. Whether that reduces cost or complexity depends on the deployment: workload, network design, isolation, compatibility, and operational practices all matter.

5. Discovery tools managed devices as a networked system

As storage networks grew, configuring every host-to-storage relationship separately became less practical. The Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS), defined in IETF RFC 4171 (2005), provides automated discovery, management, and configuration services for iSCSI and Fibre Channel devices over TCP/IP. iSNS use is optional for iSCSI and required for iFCP. By organizing device identities and discovery domains, it offers a management layer above individual connections; it does not make the underlying devices or their data physically disappear.

6. Storage virtualization and scale-out systems pooled capacity

Storage virtualization makes physical storage appear as logical resources—such as pools, volumes, or virtual disks—without changing where the physical data resides. In the FCIA’s topology overview, storage devices can be logically consolidated while remaining physically distinct; a SAN appliance can present devices together as a virtual disk. Hosts and administrators then work with the logical resource rather than treating every physical device as an isolated unit.

Later architectures extended pooling across software-managed systems and multiple nodes. SNIA’s 2021 presentation traces the growth of scale-out models, parallel file systems, object storage, and software-defined storage. Ceph is one example of software that supports block, file, and object approaches; it is not the only design for pooled or distributed storage. These architectures can distribute data across nodes rather than depend solely on one large external array.

7. NVMe moved from direct-attached use to fabrics

NVMe began as a protocol for direct-attached storage. In a 2016 Q&A, SNIA described extending NVMe across fabrics as a development then in progress; that account is a historical snapshot, not a description of current product maturity. FCIA reports that the T11 FC-NVMe specification was completed in 2018 and discusses an early-2020 snapshot in which products had been shipping for a few years. These milestones show how NVMe gained a fabric path; they do not establish a present-day adoption share.

How do Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and NVMe over Fabrics compare?

All three can be used for block storage, but they differ in protocol, network infrastructure, and operational trade-offs. The best fit depends on the application and the environment rather than a universal ranking.

Option Access model and transport Infrastructure and management considerations What to evaluate
Fibre Channel Block storage over Fibre Channel Typically uses a dedicated storage fabric with purpose-built management and separation from general Ethernet traffic Host and array support, fabric skills, isolation needs, workload requirements, and the cost of dedicated infrastructure
iSCSI Block storage over TCP/IP Ethernet Can use Ethernet equipment and practices already present, but storage traffic still needs deliberate network design and administration Network capacity and configuration, operational ownership, host and array compatibility, and required workload behavior
NVMe over Fabrics NVMe block commands carried across a fabric; the fabric technology can vary Extends NVMe beyond direct-attached devices; specific implementation and management depend on the chosen fabric Supported host, array, and fabric combinations; latency needs; and deployment complexity. The 2016 SNIA account and 2018 FC-NVMe milestone are historical dates, not current market comparisons

A dedicated Fibre Channel fabric can provide purpose-built separation and management, while Ethernet-based iSCSI can reuse common networking infrastructure. Neither automatically wins on cost, performance, or simplicity: those outcomes depend on design, workload, and the people and systems operating the network.

How do virtualized storage and server virtualization fit together?

Storage virtualization abstracts disks and arrays into logical capacity, pools, and virtual disks. Server virtualization abstracts physical compute resources into virtual machines. They address different resources, but can be used together: a virtual machine can consume a virtual disk backed by a storage pool, for example. Calling storage “virtual” describes how capacity is presented and managed, not an absence of physical disks or locations.

Storage Spaces Direct: pooling local disks in software

Storage networking’s evolution is not only a story of bigger external fabrics. Microsoft’s System Center Virtual Machine Manager documentation describes Storage Spaces Direct as grouping disks into pools and creating virtual disks, called storage spaces, from that capacity. In this deployment model, software pools local storage, which can remove the need for remote SAN devices. It is one architectural example rather than a claim that every environment can replace a SAN this way.

What changed—and what did not?

  • Storage moved from being bound to one server toward shared access, first for files and then for block devices.
  • Fibre Channel and Ethernet-based iSCSI are different transport and operational choices; neither is the definition of a SAN.
  • Virtualization makes physical capacity easier to pool and present logically, but the storage still exists on physical devices.
  • Modern systems can pool local disks or distribute data across nodes, so shared storage is not limited to a traditional dedicated SAN.
