The timeout was caused by a long, multi-step SEO analysis running inside a single edge request. Fatt Coder says the workflow could take up to 45 seconds, while the connection was cut off after 30. The reported fix was to run the analysis in the background with ctx.waitUntil() and have the frontend poll for completion every two seconds. That moved the work out of the request’s waiting path; it was not a demonstrated capacity upgrade.
What was timing out
In a DEV Community post dated October 6, 2026, Fatt Coder described a side project that reached the Indie Hackers front page. The tool accepted a keyword, scraped the top ten Google results, retrieved Domain Rank values through DataForSEO, and asked an LLM to identify content gaps. The author says the full chain could take up to 45 seconds and that Cloudflare’s edge connection ended at 30 seconds. These are the author’s reported figures for this incident, not universal platform limits or independently verified measurements.
The important detail is the work happening inside one request: several external operations and an LLM call had to finish before the user could receive a result. A CDN can serve eligible cached content without contacting an origin, but it does not automatically make a dynamic, personalized, or computationally expensive endpoint faster.
How the author changed the request flow
Rather than keeping the original request open until every analysis step finished, the author moved the expensive work into asynchronous processing using ctx.waitUntil(). The frontend then polled for completion every two seconds. The post says “the timeout is gone,” but reports no before-and-after latency, concurrency, reliability test, or cost comparison. It also does not establish the job’s durability, retry behavior, or cancellation semantics.

What changes for the user
The browser no longer has to hold one request open for the entire analysis. It can receive a response indicating that work is underway and check back for a result. This separates user wait time from the lifetime of the computation, but the application still needs a way to represent job status and return the completed result. The source does not document those implementation details.
When this pattern is a fit
Background jobs are worth considering when a task is too slow or variable to complete within the request window, and the user can tolerate waiting for a result. They are not automatically appropriate for every endpoint: work that must finish before a transaction is confirmed, for example, has different requirements. Before choosing an implementation, decide what should happen if work fails, needs a retry, or is no longer wanted.

Diagnose before adding infrastructure
For a chain of API calls and model work, measure the end-to-end duration and the time spent in each step. That shows whether the delay comes from scraping, a third-party service, model generation, or another part of the path. It also helps distinguish a timeout problem from a traffic-capacity problem. A single request taking too long does not by itself prove that the application needs more servers or a rewrite.

- Check whether slow steps are consistently slow or vary with traffic and external services.
- Estimate how many requests can run concurrently and what each one costs to serve.
- Set limits and user-facing behavior for requests that fail, take too long, or are submitted repeatedly.
That distinction matters when a side-project founder asks, “How to scale my side project to handle 100k users?” or “How to avoid first traffic surge crash”. Those are useful questions, but the reported timeout does not establish that this project had 100,000 users or a traffic surge. It establishes that its analysis could outlast the request window.

Choose the intervention for the bottleneck
Moving work to a background job addresses how long a request waits. Other tools address different problems; they are not interchangeable fixes.
| Option | What it helps with | What it does not solve by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous job processing | Lets the user-facing request return while deferred work continues. | Does not establish job durability, retries, cancellation, or lower total compute cost. Those depend on the design. |
| CDN caching | Can avoid an origin round trip for content that is eligible and already cached. Cloudflare’s August 21, 2025 incident report describes this behavior. | Does not automatically cache dynamic or personalized responses, eliminate all network dependencies, or prevent every outage. |
| Rate limiting | Can constrain costly requests by route, method, or a meaningful client identifier such as a key, cookie, or request field. | Does not make an individual analysis faster. Limits set without observing actual usage can block legitimate clients. |
| More origin capacity | Can help when measured demand exceeds available compute capacity. | May not address a slow third-party call, expensive per-request work, or an endpoint that needs asynchronous processing. |
Cloudflare’s rate-limiting best practices note that API requests can put significant strain on an application backend. Their examples are not universal thresholds: choose limits based on observed traffic, route cost, and acceptable behavior for legitimate clients. Some illustrated capabilities depend on plan or add-on availability, which can change.

CDNs help selectively, not universally
For static assets or other cacheable responses, a CDN may reduce repeated trips to the origin. In its report on the August 21, 2025 incident, Cloudflare said cached content could be delivered without contacting the origin, while also documenting that traffic related to cached objects saturated links between Cloudflare and AWS us-east-1. The episode is a reminder that caching can reduce origin work without removing every network dependency or guaranteeing availability.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a live analysis generated from a submitted keyword, caching may not be the right first response. First determine whether requests can share a valid result and for how long. If the result is unique to each input, the core cost remains the analysis itself; caching unrelated static files will not shorten that computation.

Scale in stages and account for trade-offs
AWS’s “Scale Your Web Application — One Step at a Time”, published January 16, 2018, uses a viral technology-news post to illustrate incremental options: deliver media through a CDN, consider read replicas for read-heavy work, queue asynchronous tasks, add caching, and increase server capacity if earlier measures do not address the bottleneck. It cautions that asynchronous database replication can make reads stale. The article is useful as a diagnostic sequence, not as a current requirement to adopt a particular cloud stack.
For this project’s reported problem, asynchronous processing directly changed the request’s waiting behavior. Whether to add a queueing service, caching layer, replicas, or more servers depends on measurements and on requirements the post does not supply. An in-process background-work mechanism and a durable job system also have different reliability properties; do not assume the former guarantees that work survives failures or can be retried safely.
