Andy Fenton, a Galway All-Ireland under-21 winner who also helped Kiltormer rise to the top of Galway club hurling, has died after a recent battle with illness. Galway GAA chairperson Paul Bellew described him as “a stalwart of Galway hurling and Kiltormer” and “a man of firsts.”
Fenton’s part in Galway’s 1970s breakthrough
Fenton played centre-forward on Galway’s 1972 All-Ireland under-21 winning team. Galway beat Dublin 2-9 to 1-10 in the final, according to the Irish Examiner’s 2026 report. The paper described the victory as Galway’s first underage All-Ireland title.
Fenton later recalled the team’s realisation that the result was historic: “After the final whistle it didn’t take us long to realise how special that win actually was because we were the first team to bring back an All-Ireland hurling title to Galway in nearly 50 years.” The Irish Examiner quoted him from Game of My Life. He also remembered the old final jersey he still had at home, joking that it had “gone a shade of pink now after all the years!”
The win sat within a broader period of progress for Galway hurling. The county won the National League in 1975 and reached the senior All-Ireland finals that year and in 1979, before winning the senior All-Ireland in 1980. Those were achievements of the county teams, not a list of Fenton’s individual honours.
From Kiltormer’s intermediate title to senior success
Fenton’s contribution was rooted in club hurling as well as county teams. Kiltormer won the Galway intermediate championship in 1975, then claimed the county senior titles in 1976 and 1977. The GalwayBayFM obituary and the Irish Examiner report identify him as a central figure in that rise.
The Irish Examiner notes that Kiltormer later added Galway senior titles in 1982, 1991 and 1992, as well as the All-Ireland club title in 1992. That later record belongs to the club’s history; the reports do not establish that Fenton played in each of those subsequent successes.

He also lined out in Galway’s 1979 senior final
Fenton played senior hurling for Galway through the 1970s and started at corner-back in the 1979 All-Ireland senior final against Kilkenny. Galway lost that final, but his place in the team links his under-21 breakthrough to the county’s continued senior progress. The official GAA 1971/72 Maynooth list also includes Fenton among the Galway players; that record supports his presence at Maynooth in that period, but does not establish wider details of his college career.

In recollections from Game of My Life – Galway, reproduced by GalwayBayFM, Fenton pointed to work on juvenile hurling that began before the county’s major results. He said: “When back at the renaissance of Galway hurling in the 1970s, you need to appreciate there was a concerted effort made to improve things at underage level in the middle of the 60s with the setting up of the juvenile hurling board, Coiste Iomána na nÓg.”
He recalled one practical example from his schooldays: “I can still recall Fr Jack Solan, who was a big driver of that, coming to our school, opening the bonnet of the car and dropping off an armful of hurleys.” His account gives a local, personal detail to the broader development effort he believed helped prepare the way for later Galway teams.

Galway GAA chairperson Paul Bellew said Fenton was “at the core of that group who were the trailblazers for all of that, both in Galway and Kiltormer.” His description of Fenton as “a man of firsts” reflects the overlap between the 1972 under-21 breakthrough and Kiltormer’s rapid move from intermediate to senior champions.

The Irish Examiner reported on 1 October 2026 that Fenton had died and that funeral Mass was planned for Saturday at St Patrick’s Church, Kiltormer, with the time still to be confirmed. HoganStand’s report dated 2 October also said the Mass would take place Saturday but gave no time. Those are dated notices rather than confirmation of current arrangements.
