A Keurig K-Supreme SMART brewer was reportedly associated with 1,008.45 GB of upstream traffic over 10 days and 9 hours, according to a UniFi screenshot described by Tom’s Hardware. But the owner later clarified that the display did not show 1 TB sent over the internet: most of the traffic reportedly stayed on his home network. No packet capture established what the data was or why the traffic occurred.
What the reported 1TB figure actually means
On October 8, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that an IT worker known as Nomad noticed unusual network activity while investigating slow Wi-Fi at his parents’ home. A UniFi screenshot attributed to the coffee maker showed 1,008.45 GB upstream and 9.94 GB downstream over 10 days and 9 hours. Those are network-accounting totals described in the report, not independently verified measurements of data sent to Keurig or another internet destination. Tom’s Hardware’s account later notes the owner’s clarification that most of the traffic remained inside the local network.
That distinction matters: “upstream” in a network dashboard does not, by itself, prove that traffic left the home or reached a company server. Tom’s Hardware calculated that the reported total averages about 9 Mbps upstream, or roughly 97 GB per day; these are approximations derived from the screenshot’s reported total and duration, not separate measurements.

Which coffee maker was involved?
The reporting identifies the device as a Keurig K-Supreme SMART with BrewID. Keurig describes BrewID as a way to provide customized brew settings and recommendations on its official product page. Tom’s Hardware says the connected model also supports app-based remote brewing, remote on/off, scheduled brews, and voice-control integrations.
#1 Best Overall
- 12-CUP DURALIFE GLASS CARAFE: The sturdy 12-cup* carafe has measurement markings for accurate filling and an easy-grip handle for comfortable pouring. *Cup equals approximately 5 ounces (varies by brewing technique).
- SNEAK-A-CUP FEATURE TO PREVENT DRIPS: This feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee so you can pour your first cup before brewing ends without making a mess.
- EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The front-facing window shows you the exact amount of water that will turn into coffee, and the brew basket requires a standard paper coffee filter for proper operation.
- DIGITAL CONTROLS WITH RUBBERIZED FEEL: Large, rubberized buttons give you full control of the coffeemaker, and the easy-read screen displays the clock, brew time, and programming options.
- QUICKTOUCH PROGRAMMING WITH AUTO SHUTOFF: Easily program the 24-hour auto brew feature so you can wake up to a fresh pot of coffee or whenever you desire. 2-Hour Auto Shutoff for added safety and peace of mind with every use.
Those features help explain why the brewer connects to a network, but none explains the reported traffic volume. The product page identifies the model and its features; it does not establish the cause of this incident.
Why was the coffee maker sending so much traffic?
Nobody has established the cause or the contents of the traffic. The owner did not perform packet captures, so the available account does not verify the payload, destination-level activity, or mechanism behind the unusually high local-network traffic. TechSpot characterized a bug as likely, but that remains a hypothesis—not a confirmed firmware defect. TechSpot’s coverage also says most of the activity stayed within the home network.

- BREW BY THE CUP OR CARAFE: Brews both K-Cup pods and coffee grounds.
- MULTISTREAM TECHNOLOGY: Saturates the grounds evenly to extract full flavor and aroma in every cup, hot or cold.
- BREW OVER ICE: Adjusts temperature for maximum flavor and less ice melt for single-cup iced coffees and teas.
- STRONG BREW & EXTRA HOT FUNCTIONALITY: Brews a stronger, more intense-flavored cup and the extra hot feature brews a hotter single cup.
- MULTIPLE BREW SIZES: Brew 6, 8, 10, or 12oz single cups or 6, 8, 10, or 12-cup carafes. 12-cup glass carafe specially designed to limit dripping.
The reporting does not establish a hack, surveillance, a data breach, or a problem affecting other K-Supreme SMART units. Tom’s Hardware said it had no recorded comment from Keurig at publication.
What the owner did, and what it does—and does not—show
According to Tom’s Hardware, the owner rebooted the brewer and moved it to a segregated VLAN, after which the problem stopped at least temporarily in this case. A reboot can test whether a transient device state clears; network segmentation can restrict a device’s access to other local devices. Because both actions were taken, the report does not isolate which one mattered, show that the traffic stopped permanently, or prove either measure is a universal fix.
Rank #3
- 4 BREW STYLES: Select from Classic, Rich, Over Ice, and Cold Brew for coffee any way you like it.
- ICED COFFEE: Bold iced coffee flavor that's never watered down.
- COLD BREW: Smooth, fresh cold brew in as little as 10 minutes.
- 8 BREW SIZES: Small cup, regular cup, XL cup, travel size, or XL travel size. Plus, you can choose from a quarter, half, or full carafe.
- REMOVABLE RESERVOIR WITH AUTO-METERING: Easy-to-fill, removable water reservoir with auto-metering to sense water amount, so there’s no need to measure or constantly refill.
If your router or access point already offers a guest network or VLAN, separating smart-home devices from computers and phones can limit their access to those devices. It does not prevent an appliance from generating excessive traffic, and this incident does not establish that new networking equipment is necessary.

What owners can reasonably conclude
- The reported UniFi totals were 1,008.45 GB upstream and 9.94 GB downstream over 10 days and 9 hours—not verified internet-transfer totals.
- The owner later said most of the traffic stayed on the local network; there is no published packet-level analysis identifying the data or its destination.
- A bug is one possible explanation, not a confirmed cause. The available reporting does not show that data was exfiltrated or that other units are affected.
- The reported temporary improvement after a reboot and VLAN change is one account, not proof of a lasting remedy.
