To let developers edit the same code in real time, combine a browser code editor with a shared document model that reconciles concurrent changes, a transport that distributes updates, and persistence that lets rooms recover after disconnects. A WebSocket connection alone is not enough: it moves messages, but does not define how simultaneous edits merge.

This guide covers a reusable public architecture, not Google’s proprietary implementation. One practical route is to pair an editor such as Monaco or CodeMirror with Yjs, then choose how to distribute and persist its updates.

What has to work for multiple developers to edit the same code?

A collaborative editor has several responsibilities that are easy to conflate. The editing surface handles typing and code-oriented interface features. A shared document model defines how concurrent edits are reconciled. A network provider sends updates between participants, while presence displays information such as who is active and where their cursors are. Persistence makes it possible to restore a room after people disconnect.

These are connected layers, but they are not interchangeable. A transport can deliver updates without deciding what they mean when two people edit overlapping text. A merge model can reconcile changes without providing authentication, storage, a code editor, or a user interface.

Which components should you choose?

Editing surface: Monaco or CodeMirror

Choose a browser editor according to the language features, extension model, accessibility needs, and product constraints your application has. Monaco and CodeMirror are examples with bindings documented by the Yjs project; neither is required. Treat the editor as the user-facing editing surface, not as the source of truth for collaboration semantics.

Shared document: a model that reconciles concurrent changes

Each participant needs to work against a shared representation of the editable buffer. Yjs provides a CRDT-based model with shared types that can be updated concurrently and merged automatically. Its documentation describes the project as “a high-performance CRDT for building collaborative applications that sync automatically.” That is Yjs’s description of its purpose, not a numerical benchmark or a guarantee about performance in your workload.

Adopting a CRDT library does not by itself settle application policy. You still need to decide who may enter a room, who may edit, how changes are retained, and how to recover from failed writes or unavailable services.

Transport and presence: updates are not cursors

Yjs describes itself as network agnostic and documents network providers such as WebSocket and WebRTC. Select a provider based on your topology, operational needs, and security model; the shared document model and transport are separate choices.

Keep presence separate from document content. Participant lists, selections, and cursor indicators help people coordinate, but they are interface or ephemeral state, not code edits to persist as part of the buffer. Decide how presence is sent, how stale participants disappear, and what information other room members may see.

Persistence and recovery: define what happens after a disconnect

Yjs also lists persistence providers for storing updates. Decide whether your application stores document state, a history of updates, or both, and specify retention and restoration behavior. Test recovery after a participant disconnects, a service restarts, or a write fails; do not assume that reconnecting a transport alone restores a room correctly.

How do you build the first working version?

  1. Choose the editor and define the editing scope. Decide which language features and editor capabilities the first release needs. Select an editor with a documented integration for your collaboration model, or plan the binding work explicitly.
  2. Connect the editor to one shared document. Make the collaboration-aware document the shared source of edits rather than trying to synchronize screenshots, full-file snapshots, or independent editor buffers without merge semantics.
  3. Choose how updates travel. Select a network provider and implement room joining, update delivery, disconnect handling, and authorization checks. Verify that participants converge on the same document after concurrent edits.
  4. Add presence independently. Show useful participant and cursor information without treating it as code content. Define what is visible to other participants and when stale presence is removed.
  5. Persist and restore room data. Add a persistence provider or your own storage path, then verify that a room can be restored according to your retention and recovery policies.
  6. Exercise realistic collaboration cases. Test simultaneous edits at the same location, edits in separate regions, reconnects, and recovery from failed storage or network operations. Measure latency, memory use, update size, and recovery behavior using representative documents and concurrent-edit traces before setting production expectations.

This sequence is an implementation plan, not a claim that any one library or provider automatically supplies the surrounding product requirements.

Should you use OT or CRDT?

Operational Transformation (OT) and Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) are different families of approaches to reconciling concurrent edits. In its explanation of the distinction, the Yjs project describes OT as transforming index positions to preserve convergence, while CRDTs use a data model designed to merge concurrent changes. That contrast is useful for orientation, but it is not proof that one family is always the right choice.

The comparative paper Real Differences between OT and CRDT for Co-Editors reviews representative approaches and working editors and underscores that results depend on context. Choose based on the constraints of your application rather than a blanket claim that either approach always wins.

Decision question Why it matters
Must people edit offline and merge later? Offline collaboration changes the requirements for accepting and reconciling changes. Establish whether that workflow is essential or whether a server-mediated online workflow is acceptable.
Do you want a central authority? A server can be useful for authorization and operational control. Decide how much authority the server should have over edits and room membership.
Are users editing arbitrary text or structured code entities? Plain text collaboration and language-aware operations are different product needs. Define whether the shared model is a text buffer or needs to represent richer code structures.
What are the workload and recovery requirements? Document size, concurrency patterns, retention, and recovery behavior affect the engineering choice. Validate them with representative usage rather than assuming a general performance result applies.
Who will operate synchronization and storage? Running the backend gives your team operational responsibility; a hosted service shifts some infrastructure work but requires review of its feature set and terms.

The available sources establish no numeric performance result for a particular workload. Treat latency, memory, update size, and recovery as measurements to make in your own proof of concept, not as settled properties inferred from a library description.

Should you operate the backend or use a hosted Yjs service?

Operating your own synchronization and persistence infrastructure gives your team direct control, but also means owning deployment, security, observability, recovery, and maintenance. A hosted service can reduce the infrastructure you operate. Yjs documentation names Liveblocks, Y-Sweet, and Tiptap as providers offering Yjs as a service; these are options to evaluate, not a ranking or endorsement.

Compare any candidate against your application’s requirements and verify current features and terms directly with the provider. A small proof of concept can expose integration gaps before you commit.

  • Supported editor bindings and the collaboration features they cover
  • Authentication and authorization options for rooms and participants
  • Persistence, export, and room recovery behavior
  • Deployment geography and data-handling terms
  • Observability, service limits, and operational responsibilities
  • Current pricing and a practical migration path if your needs change
